Today Six Flags Great America announced that after 21-years of operation, the park will be removing Iron Wolf. Fans of the classic coaster will have their last chance to ride on Labor Day, September 5, 2011. The ride's removal has been rumored for a number of years and it's time has finally come to be removed from the park.

Opened in 1990, Iron Wolf was the first coaster manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard, which went on to create some of the world's greatest coasters. In addition to being the company's first coaster, it was a custom stand-up model that positioned riders in the up-right position. Iron Wolf featured 2 inversions, a modest height of 100 feet, and a 2:00 ride duration.

If rumors are true, Iron Wolf will soon find a new home at Six Flags America. The ride's removal seems to indicate confirmation of what fans are calling the "Ride Relocation Program". According to several sources, Six Flags is going to beging removing rides from certain parks, and transferring them to another Six Flags park to be marketed as "new". Other rumored removals include Magic Mountain's Deja Vu, and Discovery Kingdom's Pandemonium (formerly Tony Hawk's Big Spin).

I was never a big fan of the coaster due to the stress put on my knees. But it's still sad to see it go.

I can see Six Flags getting called cheap over this one. They must not have the money to build new rides.

I would say that Iron Wolf is not worth relocating. It was truly one of the most unbearable rides I've ridden, and easily the most violent steel coaster. No matter what superhero they name it after, or what color they call it, I just don't think it's a very good ride. And it's not the fault of the trains or anything... It's just too compact, too many transitions, too much speed for me.

Thank God Kings Island and Cedar Point are'nt owned by Six Clowns, I mean Flags.

Right. Cedar Fair doesn't relocate rides? Ask Dorney Park. Or look at Firehawk.

Not to mention it often costs nearly as much to relocate a ride as to build new.

And Six Flags COO is no one but a former Kings Island GM and head of a little park chain you may have heard of, Paramount Parks.

And, oh yeah, Jeff Gramke said a couple of years ago that Cedar Fair would be doing a ride rotation program.

Lastly, after Iron Wolf is removed, it will have had 22 years of operation at SFGAm.

Ninja, which one? I would much rather ride ninja at SFMM than the Wolfie.

I'm Just glad my son got to ride Iron Wolf for the first time two weeks ago.

I think it's sad to see B&M's first coaster to be moved, but under Six Flags who knows if it will be moved..... I've always wanted to ride this since i visited Six Flags Great America as a kid in 2004, and seeing my older brother and sister along with my dad ride it while I rode Spacely's Sprocket Rockets. I remember just looking at for a while,and it looked to me to be one of the coolest coasters. I said when I was tall enough I would want to go back and ride it, but I can't since we moved to coaster land, ohio. It's just sad to see it go...

I never have riden SFOG's but my head always hurt a little after the SFSL version , but my dad would have to bring Advil to take after the ride!

SFStL's was begun by Arrow, but finished by Vekoma. SFOG's is far worse, and pure Vekoma.

Ninja at SFOG is much worse. Iron Wolf is another headbanger. Another problem is that it is a kneebanger, too.

Ninja and The Roller Coaster at New York New York Casino, all Zamperla Flying Coasters. Rides I never, ever need to ride again.

And probably won't.

Note Iron Wolf did not make that list. It's far from wonderful, but it's historic and has some ridability. In fact, I prefer it to Mantis.
