Cedar Point Ride Process during T-Storm or rain

Featured Replies

I am heading to Cedar Point next week. Its my first time their. And of course its supposed to rain and have scattered T-Storms. What rides will be open during rain? And which will not? Thanks!

1. Depends on severity of rain on what warrants a shutdown. Some rides will transfer off and run with limited capacity for moderate rain, some rides automatically go down before/during rain

2. Any lightning within I believe 10nm warrants shutdown, I could be incorrect, but that's what sounds right to me if memory serves correct.

Rule of thumb, if you see Gemini, TTD, or Millie go down, weather is imminent or very light (they automatically shut down before/during weather). If it's light and you see rides like Corkscrew, maggie, & I believe Maverick, ect. up, they'll probably run limited capacity (one/two train). If those are shutdown, nothing will be up...

From Cedar Point's website:

Rides will close due to weather conditions, particularly rain, high winds and/or lightning. A specific answer as to which rides close or remain open is not possible because varying degrees of inclement weather cause different effects on different rides. Those rides affected the most are the roller coasters and the high rides. Cedar Point makes every effort to reopen the rides as quickly and safely as possible after the adverse weather conditions cease. Sorry, no rainchecks or refunds.

Generally, the following weather conditions will affect the listed rides and attractions:

  • HIGH WINDS - These rides MAY close depending on wind speed and direction: Gemini, Giant Wheel, Magnum XL-200, Mantis, maXair, Mean Streak, Millennium Force, Power Tower, Raptor, RipCord, Sky Ride, Skyhawk, Skyscraper, Snoopy Bounce, Top Thrill Dragster , WindSeeker and Zoom Flume.
  • ANY PRECIPITATION - These rides WILL CLOSE: 4 x 4's, Challenge Raceway, Giant Wheel, Raptor, Top Thrill Dragster and Woodstock Express.
  • STEADY RAIN - All rides listed under ANY PRECIPITATION and the rides listed below will close: Calypso, Corkscrew, Gemini, Iron Dragon, Magnum XL-200, Mantis, Matterhorn, Maverick, Mean Streak, Millennium Force, SkyScraper and Snoopy Bounce.
  • HEAVY RAIN - All rides listed under ANY PRECIPITATION or STEADY RAIN and the rides listed below will close: Blue Streak, Junior Gemini, maXair, Mine Ride, Monster, Ocean Motion, Power Tower, Sky Ride, Skyhawk, Snake River Falls and Wicked Twister.

And by the way, what day are you planning on going to the park next week? I just pulled up the 10 day forecast for Sandusky and it actually looks like a pretty nice week. Next Tuesday and Wednesday only have a 30% chance of rain, so if a storm does pop up, don't expect it to last very long. That's the way things are at the Point. All of a sudden a storm rolls in but it's gone within a 1/2 hour. So right now things actually look pretty good for you, so have fun on your trip and don't let a short shower or storm ruin your trip!

EDIT: It wasn't mentioned on CP's website, but Gatekeeper could also be a ride that closes depending on wind speed/direction. And I believe it runs in rain (not sure how heavy) but with only 1 train.

yes. Some of my favorite days at CP has been in the rain. Crowds will die out and the sun will come out and then you can hop on TTD. CP does a great job at always being ready to get rides started when weather subsides.

That is true. The day we went up a few years ago, it rained briefly in the morning (right before opening). The crowds stayed away. It had about a 40% chance of rain on the point but by 2 pm we had ridden everything in the park (minus shoot the rapids...)

Thanks! So does Raptor run during rain?

No, raptor goes down during rain as the chain grease gets loose and may fall on the guest bellow.

last friday i was at cp and it started raining heavily around 800 as the park closed at 10 there was a mass exodus, as the rain subsided aorund 9 rides started running again so i went out and hopped on Gatekeeper with a 15 minute wait, it was still light rain at the time, but they kept it moving and i rode Gatekeeper twice in a 35 minute period

Thanks! So does Raptor run during rain?

No, raptor goes down during rain as the chain grease gets loose and may fall on the guest bellow.

It closes for other reasons than that for what I know of...but I can't really prove this one wrong, but that sounds quite odd, especially considering there are covers over the wheel/axle assemblies to prevent this
