Good-bye WaterWorks at end of 2003!

According to The Cincinnati Enquirer, WaterWorks will cease to exist at the end of the 2003 season to facilitate park expansion.

I don't see PKI getting out of the water park business (though that would surely be good news for The Beach Water Park and even Coney Island). My guess is that the WaterWorks will be renamed and re-themed with some additions.

Great find ItalianChef! And from the official PKI website:

http://www.pki.com/corpinfo_press_waterwor...rks_release.jsp

While I don't see them getting a coaster for next year, this seems the place where it will go in 2005. It'd be impossible to build one for next year there, they just wouldn't have the time; with the demolition and all.

EDIT - Just read this qoute about the 2004 season from Craig Ross. "Our guests are in for a real surprise next season."

Ok if this is a water park expansion like what is rumored, I think PKI may be hurting themselves by saying waterworks is closing for good. Season Pass sales could be hurt by this news as some of the general public decide not to renew or get a pass because they think the water park will be no more next year.

i bet they are just trying to mess with the minds of the guests. Cause you all know that some people would believe it when they see it. laugh.gif

I doubt anything is being removed, unless it is for a new water attraction, it would just hurt them to take it out even it they went through it.

Notice they are saying Waterworks is only 15 acers. Remember back in 1997 they doubled the size of waterworks to 30 acers. I have a feeling that some of the older watersides that have been open since 1989 will be removed and some new better waterslides but in place for 2004. I have a feeling the wave pool which is only 6 years old and Whip Out Beach only 5 years old will remain. Do any of you remember the surveys on thrillnetwork.com? They had one a couple of month's ago about water parks. I bet they are going to really theme up the waterpark and change the name. So Waterworks that we know today will be no more. Do you see what I'm getting at?

Wow! I was not expecting that. Yeah, they could be bluffing and just be renovating the area and switching it over to Splash Works (didn't some of you say you had seen Splash Works towels?) but I don't think so. According to the wording in their statement, the area will be used for expansion. This brings up lots of questions. What about the train? Will it sill be transportation back to the area or will they redo the train scenes and bring them back to where they used to be? They might just do what they did with the Animal Safari and build on it over the course of a few years.

Anyway, this could be big!

You may have noticed all the hints regarding people getting wet in 04, so I really doubt the water park is going the way of the dodo anytime soon. But I do think it will be massively overhauled and be a pretty nice place to be for 2004. Still, saying they're taking it out won't boost season pass sales. We'll just have to wait until another anouncement.

So all you people who said you see alot of water for pki next year. You were totally wrong. More like i see no water for pki. All of you said we would get a waterworks expansion. Shows how much you know. Not trying to insult but peeps kept arguing about that wheather we would get a expansion to waterworks or a roller coaster. Though no one has comfirmed we will get a coaster. We definitly know were not getting a waterworks expansion. so for all those who said we were you were wrong.

Actually, Pfrevenge, I hate to burst your bubble, but we are getting a waterpark expansion. Everyone who knows has been saying that. And the thrill year is in 05. PKI get loads of pass sales off of the waterpark, 04 is going to boost that by building on to that idea in a big way. You can't demolish the water park, and then put a coaster into that area by the start of 04. It'd be a waste of plumbing, and an entire area. And there's just not enough time. As said before, alot of people are going to get wet next year, and it won't just be by Congo Falls or White Water Canyon. Of course I could be totally wrong, PKI may actually destroy the water park. But, to me, that'd be a really crappy business move.

Does anyone remember the 'stunt' Q102 pulled a couple years ago? They kept playing promos saying "Q102 is dead..." When it reality the 'old' Q102 was 'dead' - they kept playing those and in reality the 'new' Q102 just meant no more Rap on the station.

Is it possible that PKI is doing the same? Like someone said about the name SplashWorks (which I personally don't like) - Is it possible that WaterWorks is 'dead' but SplashWorks is 'born'?! I just can't see them getting rid of that waterpark...

They have SO much land that is available that it seems strange to HAVE to use that area for expansions...could they be moving the waterpark? I know I'm throwing out a lot questions, but I'm just kind of thinking as I type...

I don't know what to think...I do agree that 2004 won't be a coaster year, which isn't a bad thing - variety is the spice of life (corny but true)...The only coaster possibility I could see is the one I can't think of the name of - with the water spraying everywhere - Super Saturator? I think that's something else!?

OK, enough rambling! Just my thoughts...I truly think they have something up their sleeves @ PKI!!

Maybe a new coaster is in store for 04. I was thinking a huss j2 was going to be built, but I hope we get the coaster. I am happy about the destruction of the waterpark, I dont like it at all. I am not sue what is going on. The PKI homepage is down, maybe it is just me, maybe they are changing the home page for the announcement for the new ride? Who Know's?

I still don't think it's going anywhere....I just can't seem them totally getting rid of the water park.

My only other thought - totally a long shot - and I hope it isn't true, but maybe after all these years they struck a deal with The Beach? Access to both parks?! I know it's not likely - I just can't see them getting out of the waterpark aspect.

They've definitely got me on the edge of my seat!

I am a little confused. Where, exactly did you guys see that they mention anything about only fifteen acres being destroyed? I read the Cincinnati article and the pki link and it never mentions acres in either one. So, how exactly are we going to have a wet 2004 when they are destroying Water Works? Can't really understand this move, though. Seems to me that they have plenty of room elsewhere to expand. I liked WW, except that when people from WW would go over to PKI and ride rides and then I'd have to sit on a wet seat.

Ok guys. I am not joking about this........we all need to breathe. I 'm serious, 3 big deep breaths slowly in through the nose and out through the mouth....

Ok, now, we all need to carefully analyze what the press release says:

PARAMOUNT'S Kings Islandâ„¢ ANNOUNCES 2003 IS THE LAST SEASON FOR WATERWORKSâ„¢ WATER PARK

Area will be used to make way for future expansion in 2004

Kings Island, Ohio - WaterWorks, the largest water park in the area with more than 20 rides and slides, will open for its last day of operation on Labor Day, September 1, 2003. The 15-acres of land currently occupied by WaterWorks water park will be utilized for future park expansion in 2004.

"Our guests are in for a real surprise next season," hinted Craig M. Ross, Paramount's Kings Island's executive vice president and general manager. "It is going to be amazing."

The attractions in WaterWorks water park have given more than 35 million slides since opening in 1989.

Now, that we've all read it and got the facts straight, lets start making some formulated ideas on what this could mean. Not just opinionated third grader responses because we're angry or we have the opportunity to rub a rumor into somebody's face. Lets work together and try and solve this mystery because one thing is unanimous: we are all clueless......

You're getting way to excited over nothing. A simple press release stating half of the waterpark would be gone. They never even said they were demolishing it, they just said it would be the last season for Waterworks. That doesn't mean they're demolishing the whole thing. They said 15 acres when it is really 30, do you think the own park would get their facts wrong? I highly doubt it.

I'm gonna stick with "WaterWorks" being gone and totally re-vamped and expanded into "SplashWorks" (or some better name hopefully)....I'm thinking this water 'park expansion' will include all new attractions (slides, lazy river, re-vamped wave pool, bodyboard simulator, etc.) and either a Super Saturator or Master Blaster (like at Schlitterbahn)....I think the waterpark will be completely overhauled so that it's not even recognizable as WaterWorks...

ok.... quote from cincinnati enquirer article:

The Cincinnati Enquirer

MASON - Paramount's Kings Island is closing its water park after this season, park officials announced today.

That article says closing... im afraid to beleive this... i'm not goin to be one of the GP that beleives everything they hear. The article and press release only mention the 15 acres and the 1989 slides. I am thinking right now, just as a few others on this board are that the older part will be completely redone, new slides, new theming, all kinds of good waterpark stuff... another expansion will be built, and the addition from a few years bck will just be spruced up a bit.....

Wow, im shocked... i relaly dont know what to beleive or even think anymore... but thats what running through my mind.... guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I agree with most of you, Water Works won't die. They're going to retheme it and stuff. Personally, I don't know how entirely much I like the themeing. I kind of like having rides with origional names and stuff, it kind of takes me back to the classic American theme park.
