Kings Island's 45th!

Lets think about it... The year is 1972, gas cost about $.36 a gallon, first class postage was $.08, HBO is transmitted(the first pay cable network), the CAT scan was developed, the birth of the Magnavox Odyssey (first home game console), Atari releases PONG arcade. 1972 also gave us great movies like Cabaret, A Clockwork Orange, and the Godfather. So no surprise that 1972 also gave us one of the best forms of entertainment today in Kings Island. 45 years is a long time for anything to last but not only will KI accomplish that in 2017 but they've done it in style. I'd like to hear peoples fondest memories from the past 45 years as well as what everyone hopes the park will do in celebration when it hits its Sapphire anniversary next year. I personally would like to see some old nostalgia around the park(Like the singing toadstools at KD).

This is the 45th season.

I dont believe your suppose to count the first season... didnt they celebrate 40th in 2012?

40th anniversary, yes. Put another way, this season (2016) is the 45th season and 44th anniversary. Just as 1973 was the second season, but first anniversary. Anniversaries count only one end of the range (and thus can be calculated by straight subtraction), but the total number of seasons requires counting both ends (and thus requires adding one to the result of a simple subtraction).

Terp is very right. 45th year and 45 anniversary are different. However the Anniversaries are better though because the guys at CF get excited and do extra stuff for the park and its customers! Cant wait to see what this anniversary holds other than a new ride.

What did they do for 2012?

Terp, who likes to ask questions.

That was the year they expanded the water park and named it Soak City(10 million dollar expansion i believe). They also experimented with some special things for guest(letting families open the park, start fireworks, etc). They also did some changing to the menus. And lets not forget the Brady Bunch came back! Well at least 3 of them.. Theres other things i know im forgetting. But theyve always done things like that for anniversaries. Who can forget the high budget amazing 20th Anniversary special  with Jason Priestley.. maybe its time for another one of those = o )

Number one song in April 1972:

Which was my parents wedding song for their wedding on March 4th, 1995. I have always liked that song. :)

I think it will be a general park improvement year... but no one can absolutely predict the future.

I remember going into that TV set as a kid to cool off. It was so cool in there. I remember parachute guys landing right by the fountain. I remember when they actually had sky rides and dolphin shows. I remember a giant slide by The Racer. Monorail safari.....you bet. I remember standing up on a coaster. I remember riding the real Bat. Nothing like spotting that Tower in the distance when you are a kid and knowing you are almost there. I used to be so depressed pulling out of the parking lot of KI. It's fun when you are an adult, but it's just magical when you are a kid.

Ki has been a long time favorite of mine. It started in the 70's, sharing great family memories with The Racer being the top coaster in the park. The eventual addition of the legendary Beast. Spending time in Hanna Barberra Land. The transition to Nickelodeon where I went one summer with my sister, her husband and my niece. So many great memories. The ivy tunnel. The Rotor. Der Spinnin' Keggers. The Bayern Curve. Tumble Bug. Winnie Witch's Cauldron.  Over the top good shows. LaRosa's pizza when we entered the gate. My teenage/20's years where I went for nothing but coasters. The addition of Son of Beast, rode it with the loop and post loop with my ex-wife. My first experience going to a Halloween event. Lots of shared memories with good friends power riding all the coasters as many times as we could in a day. Riding the original Bat coaster. The arrival of The Vortex. The classic car ride where Backlot Stunt Coaster now resides. The addition of that coaster and Paramount acquisition. Lots of movie themes in the park. Great online friends made here on KICentral. The birth of this web site and when it had combined with another that I do not remember the name of. I remember the old traveling route that we had to take in the 70's. There was great anticipation of our day to come. Knowing that when we got close, we could see the iconic Eiffel Tower beckoning in the distance.

And now, watching my son grow up and sharing experiences with him. His first trip to Kings Island. Our first on-ride photo. Our 2nd trip this year when he hit the magic 48" mark and rode every coaster within his height range. Sharing the same LaRosa's experience with him.

I have to say that after all these decades, I personally have never had any issue with staff. Always professional and courteous. I really don't think we give them enough credit for the jobs that they do there. Without them, KI would not be as enjoyable. And the heat that they have to endure, just to make sure that we have a good day.

As for the 45th Anniversary, it seems there will be a new coaster lurking near The Beast. I'm sure that there will be more in store, but even if there isn't, a new coaster is enough. Heck, being open for me to enjoy for yet another year is enough for me. You gotta be thankful that we have something like KI. I try to focus on experience far more than what's in store next for them.
