The Interpreter
http://toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/artic...010/-1/BUSINESS According to THIS Cedar Fair is the one that rejected an interest in Great Wolf, not CBS refusing to sell its interest... CoastersNSich
Maybe they didn't want to be a part owner of it, since their own Castaway Bay competes against Great Wolf Lodge in Sandusky. I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually bought the property outright in the future, as I'm sure they want to own their own hotel property at Kings Island. Maybe they'll buy the Kings Island Resort?... Also interesting is the proposed Paramount park in China. Obviously Cedar Fair's in no mood to go a long ways, especially for THEM to build a Paramount park from scratch. Any chance Viacom would still want to build it? That I doubt since the 2 Viacom companies (the new Viacom and old Viacom, now CBS) decided to unload their North American parks...
Captain Picard
Cedar Fair owns Paramount Parks now. If Viacom wants to build a Paramount park they will need to buy Paramount Parks back from Cedar Fair.
SOB_TOM
Or just keep going with that project, and put it under a new name. Just because the existing parks were sold does not mean that CBS cannot build others.
The Interpreter
Cedar Fair owns Paramount Parks now. If Viacom wants to build a Paramount park they will need to buy Paramount Parks back from Cedar Fair. Uh, no. It's my understanding Cedar Fair purchased ONLY the North American rights to Paramount Parks. CBS and Viacom did not sell Cedar Fair the rights to develop parks in China, and apparently, according to this article, DID offer to sell them those rights, which Cedar Fair turned down. If Cedar Fair didn't buy those rights, how did it get them???
Captain Picard
I did see anything in the article about rights. Cedar Fair owns Paramount Parks don't they?
The Interpreter
Cedar Fair bought the North American Paramount Parks. It rejected several projects, which continue to be owned by CBS and/or Viacom. It also did not buy the rights to Paramount Parks overseas. It was offered a LICENSE to use the Paramount name and theming for up to ten years. That license does not cover China.
Captain Picard
I can understand, they will have enough projects as it is.
CoastersRZ
Yeah. They have enough on their plate right now integrating the Paramount Parks into their portfolio. Not to mention that there stock is currently trading close to its 52 week low. I`m sure that down the road they would like to have a resort/hotel adjacent to Kings Island to bring in some revenue during the offseason. hauntguy
Please understand that IT'S FREAKING CHINA!!! American copyright law DO NOT apply in other countries! If I had the ability to build a replica park of Cedar Point in Germany (and use "Cedar Point") then I can! There would be NOTHING the company could do about it! ONLY in america do copyright/licensing laws/etc to they exist! I just can't see were people think this cannot happen? -Hauntguy
The Interpreter
True enough, but it IS Viacom that IS building a park in China. And Viacom has made clear that it is interested in building other Paramount Parks outside North America, as well. . .
