raptor
I have a reservation for a non smoking view room in the Bon Air Wing of the breakers. Is it really as bad as the reviews i've been reading online. About the worst reviews I've ever seen for a hotel calling it disgusting and smelly and uncomfortable. Is it really that bad? I'm not that picky but if it smells as bad as some say maybe it's a bad idea. Any feedback appreciated.
jzarley
I stayed in a un-renovated room in the Bon Air section a few years ago. And, yes, it was pretty bad. However, my room wasn't dirty...just old and small. That part of the hotel looks every bit of its 100+ years. The difference between it and the newer sections of the hotel are night and day. A friend of mine stayed there last Summer and actually thought they might have been staying in employee housing, if that gives you any idea And, comparing it to a dorm is a pretty adequate description. As long as you go in not expecting a new, nice room you probably won't be disappointed. (And, let's face it, you probably won't spend that much time in your room anyway when at CP.) After staying in the Bon Air section on a package deal in 2005, I stayed at Sand Castle Suites last year because it was pretty much the same cost as a Bon Air room. (Sand Castle can best be described as a Red Roof circa late 80's...) However, I wasn't wild about SC's location, since it felt so far removed from everything. So, this year I'm paying about $150 more on the package to stay in a newer section of the Breakers... But, ultimately, no matter how bad the room was at CP, I still think I'd rather be there than out on the mainland.
raptor
The thing that concerns me the most is smell, I don't care about anything else does smell really bad and musty? Thanks
jzarley
To be honest, I don't recall my room smelling bad (so it must not have been too bad, or I'd probably remember it.) But, I do remember there being a pretty bad smell in the hallways...sort of a damp, moldy kind of smell like the carpets had been wet a lot but never really got completely dry. If I remember correctly, I *think* the windows open in that part of the hotel as well, and in 2005 it was somewhat cool when I went in late August (we didn't go to Soak City because it was too cool), so we probably also had the windows open. Browntggrr
The biggest reason there are many complaints is because walking into the hotel, it is very nice. Nice carpeting, lots of room, renovated, and some of the newer sections of the hotel are the most frequently traveled so they are easily seen (the area around the indoor pool & TGI Fridays). The Bon-Aire section is the older part of the hotel, and well, it looks old. It is not like some of the newer hotels that you have stayed in. People are comparing the Bon-Aire section to the renovated sections of Breakers as well as other hotels. What many people forget is- you get what you pay for. The Bon-Aire section of Breakers are the cheapest rooms on the Point- and they are that way for a reason. If you want a nicer, bigger room. Pay for it. If you want a cheaper room, but have the privlege of staying on the Point, the Bon-Aire is acceptable. When I have stayed there, I have not noticed a smell. I also turn the A/C up full blast to get the humidity out of the room, which dries it out. If it smells, talk to the front desk. If nothing happens, talk to a manager. In my past dealings with CP, they have always tried to rectify things in the easiest way possible (they basically took money off my bill). If I had a choice of staying on Point- but in the Bon Aire section, or staying off Point; I will choose the Bon Aire everyday. Have a great vacation! raptor
Thanks for the info, yeah I didn't expect it to be new and state of the art, I was just concerned about that smell issue, but it sounds like people were just exagerating. Thanks for the info, if things are that bad I'll spend some more and get a better room. One of the reasons I picked it was because it had a lake view without being over 300 a night. I think it'll end up being just fine. Thanks again
