WooferBearATL
Yeah...the banking angles changed significantly between the two designs. Given I'm not informed in any way upon the actual design process, but I don't know what they were thinking...I'm a first year undergrad in engineering and I know how to calculate the necessary banking angle in a case such as this. I've learned that First Year Undergrads are Always Experts in Their Fields..... or Else They Think They Are. <G> Just as much as the guy who sold food at the park at the time The Bat was around. <G> Difference... I rode The Bat well over 100 times. I had the opportunity to ride The Bat the last few rides before it was dismantled. (But opted not to as I would have missed school.) I think that you'll agree that I do not make statements that I am reasonably or absolutely certain about. Oh, I have no doubt that you do, but DiscoDude wasn't claiming to be an expert, and made a general observation that he would probably know about. Lots of people ride coasters, doesn't mean they know how to maintain or fix them. And this has taught you how to calculate the necessary banking angle how??? Having ridden the ride doesn't make you an expert about it. I'd trust the first year engineering student who hasn't ridden it before the e-surance worker who rode it 25 years ago. Uhhh, please point out where I have given opinion as to calculating necessary banking and angle. So before you use personal attacks, maybe open your eyes. WooferBearATL
It's a simple equation based upon the arc radius and entering and exiting velocities of the body in motion, all intended to reduce lateral g's. One doesn't need to be an expert to plug in some numbers, eh? Guess the coaster's designers never went to engineering school.

Care to blow his statement out of proportion any more?

You and I have joked back and forth many times about similar things. Delorean's statements were not only ill mannered but simply rude. My point is that I'm venturing to guess that the people that designed and worked on designing The Bat were pretty competent and bright individuals. To say that even a first year engineering student knew the issues would not only disparage those that worked on the project but also does not take into consideration that the ride was a prototype. Ok, discodude never claimed they were not competent or bright, he didn't say he knew the issues, he said he knew how to calculate the banking in a situation such as designing a coaster. He was in no way put down the designers of the ride.
stremmefan
II I am not a visitor to the park on a daily basis. I have only been there a handful of times. 1979, 1981, 1983, 1990, and 2007. I love King's Island. My favorite all time roller coaster was The Bat. No matter why it didn't succeed it was still awesome. It's just too bad the problems couldn't be worked out and it had to be retired.
Raptor Jo
I remember waiting on The Bat the 1st year it opened. My b/f at the time and I waited 3 hours. That was back when they still sold beer at free standing carts in the park. The line for the ride was clear back by The Racers. People were screaming like they were having a great time....... After waiting that long and riding the thing I came to the conclusion the people were screaming because they were saying "I can't believe I waited 3 hours to ride this thing" Many people were impressed...me? Not so much And for those youngins who missed it--don't sweat it it really wasn't all that great. I seriously enjoy Top Gun -- or what ever it is now is more fun! Hey, Delorean let's just agree that we don't think much of each other. You know, and ignore each other from this point. That's what I'm going to do. odettekitrigisele
This is probably the best video that I have ever seen of The Bat. http://youtube.com/watch?v=dlaJn6c7WXg That is great footage. It brought back a lot of memories. I miss that ride. I have said that so much, but I do miss it. However, I love The Vortex. Not a shabby replacement. I want to go to KI soon. I need a KI day. Great America Guy
Wow, I really wish I could have had the chance to ride The Bat, unfortunately It was already closed awaiting removal by the time I was born. I'd have to say that of all removed coasters I wish I could have ridden, The Bat is #1. I just love aerial views that show how much track was crammed into that area. It just looked like an insane ride! On a side note, I wonder if the ride would have been able to survive with a complete overhaul, such as replacing track on curves, modifying the brake system; ect. Granted, they probably thought of that, and it was most likely cost prohibitive.
Vortex
I do like the start of the video showing both Racers forwards racing in red, white and blue. Does anyone know where I can find video of the Demon at Kings Island?
trex030786
Great video! Did anyone else check out the promo video too? It has some great P.O.V. shots! Here is the link if you want to check it out:

Does anyone know where I can find video of the Demon at Kings Island? I suspect you mean "Screamin Demon?" That was the 1st upside down ride I ever rode. All I really remember is a LONG hike up a huge flight of stairs. I remember when we went thru the invert I could see the elephants in the safari area turning upside down. Thought that was pretty cool. Also remember taking the tram thru the safari. Wow that was '88! Yikes!
The Interpreter
Uh, for at least some years, the park called what was known as Screamin' Demon just Demon... http://www.rcdb.com/id313.htm
