In addition to terminating the lease, an agreement signed Friday by Mayor Ray Nagin and IDB President Walter C. Flower III calls for Six Flags to make a $3 million cash payment to the city. maverick2007
I think that the water park idea could be more profitable than the amusement park idea.

The Interpreter
'Miscommunication' throws another wrench into plans to replace Six Flags in New Orleans: NEW ORLEANS -- The possibility of a major development in New Orleans East has been delayed. A developer looking to build a sports complex is still waiting on promised funding from the state, and lawmakers say a “communication problem” caused the year-long delay. The old Six Flags site, now a nightmare for neighbors, could eventually be replaced with big dreams -- Big League Dreams, to be exact. The developer hopes to bring a 50 acre sports complex to New Orleans East with an indoor arena, soccer fields, and at least six baseball fields modeled after historic stadiums throughout the nation.... http://www.wwltv.com/news/Sports-Complex-Study-Delayed-90805119.html
The Interpreter
City continues search for redevelopment ideas at old SFNO site: ...A series of ideas for redevelopment haven't materialized, including a proposal to convert the site into a Nickelodeon theme park, which fell apart in 2009. "I know an awful lot of people in the community got excited about it, the Big League Dreams and a number of projects that we've talked about that have not come to fruition. We don't want that to continue to happen," said Councilman Jon Johnson, who represents the district. Johnson said the city continues searching for strong ideas from people with the necessary money to back them up. Problem is, it's a challenging time for that kind of activity.... As the search for a buyer continues, other problems loom. An immediate concern is over a lack of security at the site, which is wide open. The fences have been knocked down and anyone could walk or even drive right in. Ernest Jarreau, who lives in a neighborhood adjacent to the park, sees it happen often. "It's not safe," he said. "We don't know what they be doing back there, but kids always go back there." We asked city spokeswoman Devona Dolliole if there are any plans to put up new fencing. "We unfortunately ran out of funding last year, so, right now, I just can't answer that," she said. "We have folks out there. Our city employees patrol the area. NOPD is patrolling the area as well. As soon as we get word of a trespasser, NOPD is on site immediately."... With video: http://www.wwltv.com...-114394789.html
windshawne
It's a sad situation; however, I don't see redevelopment as being a smart thing to do. The flooding and storms are going to happen again in the future, and maybe they ought to just demolish what's left and let nature take over. I'm surprised it hasn't been declared a hazardous site due to the mold growing in that place-that in itself can cause serious health issues. They need to get those buildings out of there to discourage trespassers. I've noticed the kids that have posted on you tube were not wearing respiratory protection, just gloves-and some don't even do that. Very bad idea.
