Carowinds: String of Car Related Crimes Worries Customers

Recommended Posts

Well, if you leave your wallet and valuables in plain sight in your car when you go off to play in the park for several hours, it sure can tempt thieves. If you must leave those items in your car, you should at least hide them, so it appears as if there is nothing of value in the car (at least as far as the wallet and jewelry go, its a little harder to hide the car`s stereo system).

That being said, Carowinds has had a lot of negative publicity in the last week or so with regards to security, or the apparent lack thereof.

This statement in the article doesn't say a whole lot good about Carowinds' confidence in its own security:

...Spokesman John Taylor said Carowinds has a good security system, but they rely on guests taking precautions to protect themselves....

The guest statement about expecting something when you pay ten dollars to park is a valid one:

...Leigh Arrington returned to her car Wednesday afternoon and found the stereo ripped from the dash and her wallet and some jewelry missing."You pay $10 there to park. For what?" Arrington said.

She questions how a place with lots of security could have that happen without anyone seeing it. While some of the victims left their cars unlocked, Arrington's doors were locked and damaged when the thief pried the lock open....

It doesn't take much publicity of the kind Carowinds has gotten this week to discourage guests from going to a place they may now see as unsafe. Instead many will stop to consider "Where else?"

I've never been to Carowinds, but after seeing the things that tend to happen there I'm starting to think that's a good thing.

They really need to bump up their security. Maybe hire some more guards and re-train the old ones with the new ones. I know that it's going to put a dent in their budget, but my guess is if that something isn't done quick they're not going to have to worry about it.

Carowinds is really a nice park.

Don't let these few incidents cause you to judge what is actually a very nice and very safe park.

I've never seen a bad incident at the park and the guests and employees are usually very well mannered.

I was there on Tuesday (7/15/08). The park was relatively busy. There were some security vehicles around the parking lot although none was moving around. The safest part of the parking lot appeared to be the season pass parking area with a person checking the pass for the lot.

Indeed, Carowinds does have Security Cameras in the parking lots. The parking lots are the part of the park that I know to have security cameras. However, Afterburn, Vortex, Ricochet, Goldrusher, Mansion, and BORG have cameras installed for the ride ops to see the lift hills, or in Mansion's case, the rooms. If the rest of the park has cameras, then they are good at hiding them cause I know where every drain in the park is. I even I had help ride maintenance find one at Drop Zone.

Well, maybe not every drain, but I know more than some higher ups do. Maybe I should have done security instead of rides. Then, I could have been a lonely nerd with a badge instead of a ride op that was popular with the girls. :P

I will add this about the security staff at Carowinds. We went down there about three weeks ago. We decided to take a ride on the Viking Ship and did not see a place immediatly to put out stuff. We sat a bag that had a towel, sunscreen, and watershoes next to the exit (stuff I would not have missed if it disappeared).

When we got off, there were two security guards standing there beside it. i'm thinking, great, they think it is a bomb and have called in SWAT or something. We walk over and start talking to them. They ask if it is ours, have us tell them what is inside and then take a look for themselves. They give us our bag and warn that it is not good to set things down because they can/and will walk off. I thank them for the warning/guarding of items and they are on their way.

They are watching and did not have to do that. Yes, it was my fault for setting it down and my fault it if vanished, but they protected our stuff.
