I'm working on a research project on trends of vacations plans, and I was going to cover the amusement industry with it. Does anyone know where I can get park attendance for parks across the country for years past?

...especially since Amusement Business went out of business. Even those numbers were estimates, and many of us close to the industry think many of them were pure hokum. Does anyone really believe that Kings Island and Cedar Point both draw far, far more visitors than Great Adventure? I defy anyone here to compare fall weekends or summer weekdays at either CF park to those at SFGAd and then tell me the former parks have more attendance than the latter.

Judging based upon what it looks like in a park is very deceptive.

You have to look at the attendance through the course of the day.

You have to remember that the numbers fluctuate greatly throughout any day with people coming and going.

I've been able to track down info on number of amusement parks in the country since 1999 (noting a substantial decrease after the 9/11 attacks, nearly a net loss of 500 parks), but something with attendance figures would be good.

What were the reported attendance figures for SFGAdv? I can certainly believe that KI and CP were on par with SFGAdv, especially CP, but not "far, far more."

Yep. Given those numbers, I would say either CP/KI figures were overestimated, or SFGAdv figures were underestimated. All three parks are comparable in size, and I think it would be very difficult for SFGAdv to stay afloat if there was such an extreme attendance gap.

A former PKI employee told me KI "sell's out" at 30K people.

People on PointBuzz were questioning CP being over 40K people on their busiest day (July 26th) of the season.

A Great Adventure security person this summer told me GAdv's average Saturday attendance in the summer is 45K. In addition, GAdv is open many more days than either CP or KI. I have to go with Terpy on this one.

Negative Ghostrider....

Many (especially employees) will remember the bring a friend free day the Sunday before July 4th in 2003 in which there were 60,000+ in the park. That is about the number that the park sells out at.

If that is so, then the park was crazy for allowing 60K into the park.

We would budget (normally) for 30K-38K on a normal/busy Saturday.

When I was at the park, the park full signs would be put out when the park were at or nearing 40K+.

To allow 60K+ is not only rediculous it's irresponsible.

It was ridiculous it was wall to wall people on the paths and the park ended up staying open until midnight hoping that most of the crowd would leave after the fireworks at 10:00.
