goofywdw Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 My mom was searching though some boxes in the basement and stumble upon some old photos of her and my dad at Kings Island. I asked them if I could post them on here and they said sure even though they have the "wonderful" 80s hair styles and such. They thought the pictures were from around 1987 and I don't know very much about where each picture is but I will do my best. *If you can help me out and give some awesome facts and input that would be awesome! Here is my mom on the left, her dad in the middle and his (now) ex-wife. Does anyone want to help me figure out where this was taken? Here's my goofy dad in front of the fountains on International Street. My mom at the log ride. (I don't know the name ) Here is my mom on what looks like to be on the second lift hill of The Beast. Can someone help me out with this show? My dad in front of The Beastie! From the safari ride. Again I do not know the name. My dad won my mom a frog! Haha My mom with a character I also do not know the name of. On White Water Canyon I think. From the safari ride. Again I do not know the name. And I have no idea where this was taken. Anyone know? Oldschool75 Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 The one with the Seal is from the aqua marina show they used to have just about where Diamondback's station is now. The character is Captain Caveman, Yes that is White water canyon. The last picture is from Skylab that was next to The Racer, you can see King Cobra in the background. Quote
goofywdw Posted March 24, 2009 Author Posted March 24, 2009 ^Ohhh that was King Cobra in the background. Duhh. Ok thank you! Quote
PREMiERdrum Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 What a great find! Thank you so much for sharing. This is the way I remember the park as a kid. And MAN, I forgot how cool the sign for The Beastie was! Quote
violakat03 Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 The first picture looks like it was taken at the beginning of the path that was closed for DB construction next year. I'm not sure though. Great pictures. I miss Skylab too. Quote
tigellinus Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 Dang, your parents look young in those pics for it being '87!! (when I was a wee 5 year-old) I know I have a lot of similar pics from the late 80's at KI I need to dig up...the gem I really want to find is The Vortex radio commercial I have from '87 when I used to tape songs from WZPL (in Indy)...I remember the female voice braging about "12 Stories!!"....ooohhhh so scary!! Quote
gigacoaster2k Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 Nice photos! Cool to see what the park was like before I knew it existed. But.. I feel so old now. Those were taken when I was 5 years old.. I curse myself for being born in the era of big hair and neon clothes.. and actually dressing that way when I was in grade school. Quote
The Interpreter Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 It could be worse. I doubt you ever wore a lime green "leisure suit." Or parachute pants. Or bell bottom jeans. Quote
tigellinus Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 Sure it wasn't 15 stories? We'll have to 'see' (or hear) what the Maxell Gold says!! Btw, was the Gold ever that much better than the red?? Tiggy, loving to tape from the radio all throughout elementary and middle school! Sadly, I wouldn't discover all the good music 'til late in high school Quote
deidre1976 Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 The first picture looks like it was taken at the beginning of the path that was closed for DB construction next year. I'm not sure though. Great pictures. I miss Skylab too. I think your right, that looks like the frozen banana stand in the background! Quote
gigacoaster2k Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 It could be worse. I doubt you ever wore a lime green "leisure suit." Or parachute pants. Or bell bottom jeans. I have some jeans similar to bell bottoms. I just can't believe I went out in public with my shirt tied in a knot, neon leggings, and a side ponytail.. whoever decided that was fashionable? Quote

Here's the TV ad for The Vortex. I have always liked this ad. Interpreter, the voice does say 12 stories. Quote
The Interpreter Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 How odd...when Paramount owned the park, they overpromised and under-delivered in the marketing....but Vortex IS 15 stories...and the drop alone is more than 12... Quote
TheCryptRaider Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 I like this! Thanks for posting! The Beastie's sign looks awesome! Quote
tigellinus Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 Here's the TV ad for The Vortex. I have always liked this ad. Interpreter, the voice does say 12 stories. Sweet!! I know my memory is good enough for counting BJ cards, but 15 stories actually sounded pretty good to be honest. Quote
Oldschool75 Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 It could be worse. I doubt you ever wore a lime green "leisure suit." Or parachute pants. Or bell bottom jeans. Or the butterfly collar. I hated wearing those! Quote
standbyme Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 goofywdw...if I could reach through the computer screen and slap you I would...I don't think you left out one comment that could have made me feel any older! This is the character that you don't know...it's Captain Caveman you little whippersnapper. Thanks for the fun pictures. I will leave you with one of my favorite slogans I read on a t-shirt once: "Friends don't let friends wear neon". Quote
goofywdw Posted March 25, 2009 Author Posted March 25, 2009 ^Don't hurt me I just wanted to do good! I don't think I've been called whippersnapper for a while. Quote
Rollercoast19 Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 Thanks for posting those great pictures. In the second picture you can see the Sippers stand behind your dad. I actually found a grape Sipper in my house a couple of months ago. I couldn't remember what they were called. Quote
XGatorHead 8904 Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 i miss skylab Skylab was great to ride with a date, with the way you were situated in the car. That's about all I'm sayin' 'bout that... Gator, who took many a spin on Skylab in his teenage years... Quote
Big Red Dice Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 the log ride used to be under a different name but it is the same one as the wild thornberries water ride Quote
The Interpreter Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 Well, yes and no. The layout is the same. The old flume was completely redone. It is a faithful rendition of what was, save the theming (including that silly elephant). Quote
windshawne Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 OH, I hate that elephant! That is the single thing that ruined it for me. If I want to get drenched, I'll go to the Bay, otherwise I would rather it be more natural like the old days Quote
BavarianBeatle Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 Thanks for posting those great pictures. In the second picture you can see the Sippers stand behind your dad. I actually found a grape Sipper in my house a couple of months ago. I couldn't remember what they were called. I remember those things being so sickeningly sweet, I couldn't drink them on a hot day. Kind of like Kool Aid with half the water and twice the sugar. Great pics though!!! --Beatle, who graduated from high school in 1987 and remembers those days fondly Edit: and who had big hair and wore parachute pants and, as a result, will absolutely not be looking through boxes in his parents' basement anytime soon. LOL Quote
goofywdw Posted March 26, 2009 Author Posted March 26, 2009 Thanks everyone who enjoyed the photos! I was just informed that the first photo is actually from Carowinds not Kings Island. Sorry. Quote
The Interpreter Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 I thought so...I kept looking at that and looking at that and looking at that...but figured perhaps your parents had not even been to Carowinds! I was amazed at how much it looked like Carowinds...and now we know why! Quote
Jasper Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 Wow those are some great pictures. I love seeing old pictures of how the park looked back in the pre-Paramount days. Quote
