Today in church i was thinking of.... What does pki do when the park is over taken by the loucas next year being young I have never excperienced this for my self. Wouldent mess up drop zone like with the brakes on it ? what do they do do they just close it down for the season or open it some days or do they spray the whole park with that spray? What do you think they will do? The last time this happend would be in 1987, and what it effect would it have on bb. I no The Vortex was the coastser that opend that year in 1987.

I would think that they would have some impact. There are a lot of woods nearby where these things can hatch from.

Keep in mind that Mason/Kings Mills as we know it today did not exist 17 years ago - it was mostly Kings Island and forests out there. I would imagine that because of that there would be a lot of locusts.

But I think that the things are pretty much harmless. They're just really ugly and really numerous. I'm only 17, I don't remember the last outbreak, but I have been told that it was absolutely terrible.

I can see PKI just letting it happen. Theres really nothing you can do for a park that size. What Im more worried about it Boomerang Bay. How many do you think it would take to clog a filter?

The rest of the rides Im not concerned with at all. If one gets smashed on Drop Zone, there are what, 5 more brake surfaces? Plus, with all the movement, I doubt the bugs will bother PKI. The Beast though, well, lets hope that woods nice and treated!

Actually I don't think that the park will do anything about treating the woods... I don't think that they can do that. Even if the park treated the property, there are still plenty of areas around the park that won't. Posions are not the answer for the fact that there are too many to deal with anyway. I would think that the biggest problem will come from the rides and having these big bugs flying around and being smacked in the face by them. Oh well... they don't bite at least!

There really isn't anything you can do about the locusts/cicadas when they come. They don't really do anything, except eat the leaves off of the trees, and leave their dead bodies laying all over the place. Its just a really messy summer. I remember the last time they came. We tore their wings off, and watched them race up and down the sidewalk where I live.

I think this year is gonna blow for KI with the locusts. I mean going 72 MPH on SOB when there are billions of locusts in the air. SUCKS! But now FOF will have more people and that sucks to, not for business, but for people who hate lines. Drop Zone will be a PLUS though. Hanging 300 ft. in the air with locusts swarming around. ALL in ALL it will be interesante. blink.gif

I Believe that the wood on The Beast along with most other woodies is Southern Yellow Pine. I also think that this wood has a natural smell or tast to it that repels most insects away. I have to venture to say that it is still treated though.

As far as I see it, its just another fun element in ridding a coaster. Theres nothing like dodging the bugs at 78.3 mph! And if you screw up your gonna pay big time blink.gif !!!

Since I think its safe to say that a bunch of the people on this site were not around, or were very young the last time they came, maybe you need an understanding about the cicadas. First off, what are you all worried about the wood on the rides for? The bugs don't eat it, and they aren't attracted to it. As far as actually seeing the bugs, you will see them out and flying around, but they don't really like open areas. They like to invade trees in huge quantities. When they come, you will notice that every tree is loaded with them. You will also see little dead bug bodies on the ground, and their shells there as well. You can shake smaller trees and tree branches and see them fly out of the trees, and zip around to another tree or back into the one you shook. They are not really active in the daytime, but do come out at night. Other than that, they usually eat all the leaves off particular branches in a tree. Thats about it. want to know more? Go here! This isn't as big a deal as you all are making it out to be, and NO, Cicadas are not locusts.

Look at Brood # 10. Hits every 17 years, and it will hit in 2004.

States affected:

Deleware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virigina, West Virginia.

Now, I believe that includes Ohio and every state that borders it. cool.gif
