The Interpreter
the park will never get a major steel coaster! How interesting and daring. I won't even speculate as to who it will be exactly that will be making ride investment decisions in the future, or what those decisions will be...at ANY park, much less Holiday World. So many factors, from the economy to the change in leadership forced on the park by Will's untimely death to the sudden, rather unexpected closure of Kentucky Kingdom...even to changes over Mason way...no one knows what will happen at Holiday World two years from now, yet you know they will never get a major steel coaster. I'd take a bet on that, but I really don't think it would be a very fair one.
Cormaster
I don't see why they wouldn't ever get a major steel coaster. No it won't be a world record holder, and it'll probably cost quite a bit less than Diamondback, but you can get a good world class steel coaster for under $10 mil by Vekoma, B&M, or Intamin AG. I think at this point with plenty of good woodies, its time for Holiday World to get a big steel one. When it will happen? I dunno. I mean someone else in the thread said it best when they said Water Park is their main concern. But I do think it will happen eventually. And on that note speaking of freestyle music park, This would look great at Holiday World!
Guest Millennium
That ride doesn't look all too interesting to me. If HW were to go B&M, I would suggest a Dive or an Invert model? But I don't know.
FOFreak
On the Steel vs. Wood debate: Considering the ever growing cost of steel in todays economy, Will's well-known love of wood coasters (assuming he had a role), and the great atmosphere they have going with those woodies all around. I'm going to go ahead and guess that there is a good possiblity that the next coaster HW will get will be once again wood. They are great at what they do, and I, for one, would love to see another coasters to the likes of Voyage at the park. Will they get a steel coaster someday? Most likely. If not this time, it will very, very likely be the next.
The Interpreter
And yet, of what are the supports on Voyage made? Terpy, who likes to ask questions...
FOFreak
Steel. Which is one of the leading causes of why it has worn the way it has.
The Interpreter
If steel is so expensive, why did they use it for supports on Voyage? Terp, who likes to ask questions
Dbfan
They may not have had a coaster in 5 years, but look at since then: 2 record breaking rides, Brand new trains on the Voyage (Hopefully by the end of this year) and more. It might not be coasters, but they are still adding great rides. I would not be surprised to see a small ride enter HW next year as opposed to years past. FOFreak
^^I seem to have been stumped. My only ideas could be maitenence. And possibly the fact that wooden supports would take alot more wood as compared to steel. And steel was a bit cheaper back in the day. Do you know why? The Interpreter
Gravity Group builds quite a few wooden coasters with steel supports, as did its predecessor, CCI. I would assume cost was a consideration, and with the changing (rising) price of steel, I also wonder if that will continue. Wooden coasters with steel supports often become quite rough over time, as others here have observed. See, for instance, the Coney Island Cyclone, Villain, Cheetah, Hurricane at Myrtle Beach, The Great White and a host of others.
Coney Islander
I have a question, myself. Since The Voyage is supported entirely with steel, will its life span be more comparative to a steel coaster, or a wooden one?
The Interpreter
Wood...but see my post above yours...
Jeffy
Yes. The Kochs own a great deal of land available for future expansion. I think I heard on a podcast either Coasterbuzz or Season Pass,(yeah I'm a geek) an interview with Mr Koch who stated that he one evening walked out to Thanksgiving area of the park and was imagining that it would be somewhat in the middle of the park one day. I hope his dreams become reality and the Koch family keeps that special atmosphere not often found it other corporate parks.
