RailRider
And a non-denial denial. As has been said again and again, KingsIslandPR fully discloses when he posts here. But then again, he reflects great credit on Kings Island and Cedar Fair with his actions, words, marketing and photos. Emphasis added by me. All things we cannot say about the marketing effort by the New Kentucky Kingdom. Maybe we should all turn a blind eye and just get on board with the excitement of the New Kentucky Kingdom. We could turn this thread in to a Lightning Run construction progress thread, post pictures, webcam stills, and park updates on the status of the ride. Oh wait all of the aforementioned things are harder to find than Swiss war metals. Just adding one more useless post and creating some more pointless drama. Carry On...
BB1
Youthere, sounds like YoungStud if you ask me. BB1, just being corny KK has some major problems, and some major perks in the area, both sides have valid arguments which I would have to agree. Yet I still would like to remind you that this is the off season, and an conclusion now is just premature and childish for me. Therefore, under those circumstances, I do believe that those who are silent now, or periodically partake in this locus, are treading good ethos in the matter with discussing both sides before such an idea of yes or no of what is to come. Though, do not shut down the opposition automatically, nor name call the opposition, that just makes you look stultus; instead take in the idea, and work it for your idea, or bring up a few ideas and discuss, the reason why forums are forums. BB1, quantum igitur ad medium iter Sheesh. My head hurts. If you can't bedazzle them with brilliance, befuddle them with bullpoop? Are you a politician? Me thinks BB1 bought himself a thesaurus! Me thinks my brain isn't a thesaurus?
The Interpreter
I continue to be astounded at both the amount and the quality of the publicity I'm seeing generated for this park, both nationally and in Louisville. Simply amazing!
shark6495
I just did a Google news search on the following terms: Kentucky Kingdom and Kings Island Results: first page results only! Kings Island: 11 + more pages + 1 story about a crash near KI. Newest Dated Jan. 28. Smattering of dates from others. Cities reporting: Columbus, Dayton, Indy, Cincinnati, USA Today (national), Kentucky Kingdom: 6 results, newest dated Jan 24th by a pop culture blog talking about a new park opening. Others are dated Jan 4/7th talking about the job fair. City reporting: Louisville Thats just one page of results. Im sure if we included other pages, then difference becomes larger...
The Interpreter
Try the names of each park's new coaster. I'm sure you are being too hard on the new Kentucky Kingdom. I bet they made a big splash in Allentown today. Major parks from all across the country go. Media often run human interest stories they got from the American Coaster Enthusiasts' East Coaster, sometimes many months later. Same thing with the Chicago version, No Coaster. Surely this new park was represented. Were I the PR rep, I'd have gotten there if I paid for it myself.
shark6495
Okay upon Terps suggestion... JTR
Hello! I'm new here, and it's nice to be able to join such an active conversation about Kentucky Kingdom. I'm in Louisville, so it's big news for me. I've read the entire thread, so hopefully I won't rehash any opinions that have already been expressed. I do want to chime in a little regarding the risk to taxpayers, as it seems to be a point of real concern for many posters. I have a somewhat different take on the matter. The truth is, the Fair Board has consistently lost money since Six Flags abandoned the park. This park needs to be operational, or it needs be gone. I think they're making the right decision (although I'm admittedly very pro-park!) for a variety of reasons. First, the situation for the fairgrounds has changed significantly in the past few years. It lost college sports to the Yum! Center, and it has lost a large portion of its convention and entertainment revenue to the convention center downtown. While the park used to be one portion of a fairly diverse income stream, all the fairgrounds has going for it at this point (small events here and there notwithstanding) is the state fair. It consistently loses money and has nothing to make it competitive with the downtown sites. Who wants to host their convention at the fairgrounds, with its lovely views of a shuttered amusement park and the airport, when they could do it smack in the middle of a revitalized entertainment/dining district? There was talk of razing the park and building a hotel/casino complex on the site, a risky proposition (again, do you want to stay in a hotel staring at the airport or one of the numerous downtown hotels?) that would certainly sap a huge amount of tax dollars. Given the two options--razing the park and beginning a years-long new project or reopening the park, which is more or less a known entity and something none of the downtown sites can offer--I think keeping Kentucky Kingdom is the most responsible move. Could it cost taxpayers money? It could, if the park fails to make its loan payments. But every year it sits, it will without a shadow of a doubt cost taxpayers millions. It's a risk, but one worth taking. That said, I can think of no likely scenario that would lead the state to allow a foreclosure. I say worst case, the city and/or state will end up funneling money into the park to keep it going. The question remains if the money generated for the fairgrounds via the park will be enough to offset whatever gets put back into it. Will it be a wash? Who can say? I would think that KK would have to be a collosal failure, moreso than it was in the latter Six Flags years, for the operational park to be a bigger tax suck than the SBNO...or a parking lot (I hadn't heard that rumor. Why would they even think to do that? No need for parking if nobody is coming up the drive!) I do agree with the points made about the location being incredibly unfortunate, which does raise the question of whether it's worth throwing money into a park with so many built-in obstacles to success. I would say that, in a perfect world, KK would have never been built at this location. In its first (failed) iteration, it was never meant to be a big park, and the fairgrounds space was somewhat fitting. It became clear not long into the first Hart era that the park's potential had a low ceiling, especially to the minds of Louisvillians used to day trips to King's Island, which to this day has space galore for expansion. We all know what happens to parks that fail to add attractions, and even if we assume the park's relaunch is an overwhelming success, we know that it will eventually hit the ceiling. Then again, the fairgrounds is in a different situation today. If KK proves itself, I think the fair board will be willing to hand over more land. If I recall, the lots bordering the park have long been considered placeholders for park expansion, even when the park's future was uncertain. So, even though I agree that the location is far from ideal, it isn't necessarily a dealbreaker. Worries and fears aside, I'm really excited about having KK back. I soured on the park during the Six Flags years, as most of us did. I'm not a huge water park fan, so I'm a little bummed that we'll only have Thunder and Lightning in Year 1. Then again, as I get older, I don't always need to ride a bunch of coasters in a day. I still plan on making at least one day trip to KI, as I do every year, and hopefully (fingers crossed) my annual Orlando trip! This is going to be a heck of a year for me when it comes to park trips!

Heck, they did for years, even with Six Flags doing their best to fail. I can say that, as a Louisvillian, I liked KK (pre-Six Flags) because it was local, it had decent rides for its size, and I was there in 10 minutes. I can maybe make it to KI two or three times in a season if I plan it well. KI is an event for me. On the other hand, I can hit KK any given day, ride a few rides, hop back in the car and be at the zoo before the gates close. I consider that a good thing! From what I've read, nobody involved with KK has any delusions of beating KI. KI is a totally different beast (hyuck, hyuck).

I'm still scratching my head over the lack of Lightning Run coverage. The news stations paid more attention to them tearing down Greezed Lightnin'. I'm sure they're just waiting until there's pretty construction site footage they can show the viewers. The huge turnout for the job fair had a fair bit of news coverage as I recall, but then I'm also seeking out KK information, which I'm sure not everyone is doing. Seeing how KK is more of a local attraction than a "destination," they probably don't see as much return on early advertising as a big park like KI would.

Not disagreeing with the statement, but knowing how news rooms run, most news rooms would run a story about a park being revamped if there was something to be done. Most news stations are looking for local or area news to run. Especially for the afternoon news block 4-6. I know I have been in many meetings where the conversation is "We have 4 minutes of news to fill, anyone know of anything local? Okay if not lets run a national package"

KI competes with CP, roughly less to KK in vicinity and KI had a 2 park deal, so that idea that people commune that way can work inversely. If you look up that allusion, David defeats Goliath, David wins, Goliath falls; though, with that also it means a little guy vs big guy situation, which are unknown in any case. Rhetorical BB1, by the way, welcome to KIC.
JTR
Has anyone heard any rumors or news about the Twisted Twins revamp? If memory serves, they had budgeted a pretty significant amount for this project. I'm sad to say I only got a chance to ride these once, which was their opening year. They had the most uncomfortable seats I'd ever encountered to that point (but I must say, Tomb Raider stole that title! Ouch!). After that, it seemed like they were always closed. That was one of the things I hated about the Six Flags years. You plan to spend a significant part of your day at the park, only to find there's one coaster open and the line an hour long. shark6495
BB1: Having worked in the newsrooms before in areas of Columbus, our "Local" stretched to just outside of Dayton to Zanesville. But when I worked in Zanesville, we covered CP and KI as local. When I worked in Elmira, NY we covered 5 cities in the Northern and Southern tier as local. EDIT: Lexington 18 covered the job fair. http://www.lex18.com/news/more-than-2-500-show-up-for-ky-kingdom-job-fair/ Its under their covering Kentucky page. Same as WKYT out of Lexington (which covers Frankfurt) http://www.wkyt.com/home/headlines/More-than-2500-show-up-for-Ky-Kingdom-job-fair-238779991.html
BB1
Which I already inferred, but I'm still hesitant on calling KK as Cincy News locale. It could be, but it could be not.
shark6495
Which I already inferred, but I'm still hesitant on calling KK as Cincy News locale. It could be, but it could be not. Okay you and I are on different though processes. My bad. I was implying any "local" news coverage from media outlets that would consider Louisville in their Local area. You are right, KK wouldnt be considered local to the Cincy sites, but I would consider KK local to the Louisville and Lexington News stations.... my bad for not clarifying!
JTR
Note: Banshee broke records Banshee is a B&M, popular with many populations, especially the home grounds of Europe. Lightning Run, though a new style, is at a small park, that only have small enthusiast bases on miscellaneous sites(TPR, C-net, KIC, etc) Banshee is at a large fan base park, which, has world record breaking attractions.(KIC, KIE, TPR, C-net, CC, etc) SOB was probably one of the most "multi-fan based" spoken of topics, so the reclaimer of the site surely gets uber news. KK is a fledgling park, which ALREADY has flak, and strong hopes for good times. David and Goliath? (No, not a Six Flags attraction) Personally, I think KK and KI can coexist. Don't be putting words in my mouth, I did not imply such. I am just presenting the logic in the web searches. I have hopes for KK, I really do, but I don't pick sides before opening date. I won't even make such an conclusion untill the end of the season, or at least near the end. Like I said, I'm not picking sides, but I will be frequenting the park and I have high hopes for its success, just use logos while discussing this subject, and try, for the sake of your ethos, don't take a side. Sorry, I think we must have gotten our wires crossed here. I wasn't attempting to put word in your mouth, and I certainly didn't mean to make it sound like I was arguing. You asked if this was a David and Goliath situation, which to me sounded like you were seeking opinions on whether or not these parks will have to compete with each other. I'm of the opinion that neither park is a threat to the other, for reasons I've already mentioned. I didn't think you were taking sides, especially since I don't think there's a fight. 1. Rhetorical Question2. Of course they will! They are both in the near vicinity of HW, KI competes with HW and vice versa. Seems a truly rhetorical question wouldn't generate controversy. I don't think you should assume that Kentucky Kingdom is attempting to compete with King's Island, especially since Hart has clearly stated that they will not. The two parks will have significant overlap--they always did--but, as I said, they don't necessarily attempt to meet the same needs. KK is a small, local amusement park whose demographic will be predominately locals and families who don't necessarily desire the Big Park experience. King's Island's demographic is...well, almost everybody. And if you look at KI's attendance during KK's operational years, there really is no "KK effect" there. Flip the script and you'll see that KK grew and maintained very respectable attendance up until the point when Six Flags decided to fail. This would suggest that these two parks have and will coexist peacefully. Now, KK vs. HW, there's where competition will be a factor. And I know the story of David and Goliath. Thanks for the summary, though. Again, I say there's no battle to be won or lost, so it's irrelevant.
BB1
Which I would agree, being a Kentucky park, Kentucky news stations work towards that idea. Though, in Northern KY, where you have a strong Cincy influence, Boone, Kenton, Campbell, does not catch wind of this as easily as those down the river.
The Interpreter
Frankfurt isn't local. It's in....Germany. The capital of Kentucky is Frankfort.
