Creed Bratton
http://vitals.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/05/01/17988578-amusement-rides-hurt-4400-kids-a-year-large-study-finds?liteI found this article interesting. "The likelihood of being seriously injured at a fixed-site amusement park (like Kings Island/Cedar Point) ride in the U.S. about 1 in 24 million." This is a good article, but fails to show that most of the accidents are due to error of the rider/guest. The article talks about slips, falls, concussions, etc. occurring, but doesn't talk about how they occur. Those that abide by the rider safety laws, are less likely to have an injury. Those who try to get their kids to be taller so they can ride, try to force kids to ride, etc. are more than likely going to have some kind of accident happen. thunderbeast1968
I just saw this story on my local news this evening. (WSAZ Huntington, Wv) The end of the story, which focuses on amusement parks, mentions many accidents were reported on arcade and mall rides. Is this an unfair statistic? Mentioning of arcade and mall rides (which are NOT amusement parks) and may not have as strict of ride inspections or even a ride operator. SupremoSteveo
Great extensive article! Kind of surprised to see 30% of the injuries coming from carnivals, I would think that number would be higher than amusement park numbers. But I don't feel safe on carnival rides most of the time, so that's probably the reason I'm surprised.
The Interpreter
Slips and falls are a major cause of accidents in parks. I remain confounded that Cedar Fair tolerates the running of the bulls at rope drop. Kings Dominion didn't, until this company took over. It's rather ridiculous, really.
Creed Bratton
I agree SupremoStevo. I will not ride carnival rides.Terpy, I too am confounded that the Cedar Fair tolerates the running of the bulls at rope drop, although during ERT at KI I've seen security tell people to slow down. I still get confused at the people who stuff their children's shoes to make them hit the magic spot to ride a ride, the child gets hurt and the park is 100% at fault in their eyes.

dare-to-fly
These articles seem to come out every year around this time... And usually are very warped in how they depict parks. They show a very skewed version of what actually happens.
Oldiesmann
The funny thing is, last week WCPO did a brief story about how safe things are at KI - showing how the state inspects things. Now the local stations are saying "Rides aren't as safe as you thought!". In reality though, there are way too many problems with the study mentioned in that article to take it seriously: Based on data from 100 "nationally representative" hospitals (only 100 hospitals. Out of thousands across the country). Includes data from rides at fairs/festivals/carnivals and malls in addition to those at amusement parks Does not estimate how many kids rode said rides Sure, 4400 is a lot, but not when you look at the big picture. dare-to-fly
And especially how many of those were injuries directly at the fault of the ride rather than the person. Maybe 10? MAYBE!
