The Interpreter Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Mobile suddenly very slow just now, with much fast loading of blank pages. Sigh. Quote
malem Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 This isn't related, but I continue to get this message on just about every website I go to. "A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete. Script: chrome://global/content/editMenuOverlay.js:16" When this does pop up it freezes everything for a while and runs really slow. How do I make it stop? Does this happen when you load the page, or does it only happen if you right click the page? That script updates the context menu, and line 16 is "return;". My best guess is that one of your extensions is causing it, perhaps by calling that function many times in a row. See if it happens with them disabled. Use Firefox instead of Chrome? . chrome:// URIs are part of Firefox, not Chrome. (They predate Google Chrome by at least 5 years.) 1 Quote
TTD-120-420 Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 I use Firefox. Most of the time it happens on site that has continuously updating feeds (my own description because I don't know tech lingo) like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc... Quote
malem Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 ^ Which add-ons, if any, are installed in Firefox? Quote
jcgoble3 Posted March 2, 2014 Author Posted March 2, 2014 Use Firefox instead of Chrome? . chrome:// URIs are part of Firefox, not Chrome. (They predate Google Chrome by at least 5 years.) My head just exploded. Quote
malem Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Chrome is used as a generic term for user interfaces - buttons, menus, and other elements that the user interacts with. chrome:// URIs are used to reference files that are part of Firefox's XUL-based user interface. Google chose the term, implying that the browser functions as a user interface to the Web. 1 Quote
The Interpreter Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 And taking a real risk of genericization of trademark. Quote
malem Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 ^ Just like Windows. The term "windows" was in use for graphical computer interfaces long before Microsoft released Microsoft Windows. 2 Quote

thedevariouseffect Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Wow..that's alot, how's your load time for FF Only four, Adblock +, Google Docs, my laptop biometric scanner, and CAC Card functionality 1 Quote
TTD-120-420 Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Load times are fine for the most part. To be honest, I don't know where most of those came from or what they do. Quote
malem Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Plugins wouldn't be causing the chrome JavaScript issue. Disable the Avast extension and see if that fixes it. Plugins are generally only loaded when a webpage requests it. The only ones you need, in all likelihood, are Flash and Silverlight. Quote
TTD-120-420 Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 I disabled Avast. Will I need a new anti virus or whatever it is? Quote
malem Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 No. The anti-virus software doesn't need a browser extension to function. Add-ons from security vendors often slow down the browser because they try to check every website before it can load. 1 Quote
TTD-120-420 Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 I've been on OSU's online class website and Twitter and it has been working great. Once again, thanks for the help! Quote

coasterfanatic83 Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 (2:45 AM) The site is operating slower than usual for me right now. I currently have 3 tabs open on Google Chrome, KIC, Cookie Clicker, and OSU's student website, as well as iTunes and Microsoft Word. Hopefully this helps? UPDATE: As of now (4:09 AM) the site is back to the normal speed I usually experience. I have the same tabs and programs open. Quote
jcgoble3 Posted March 13, 2014 Author Posted March 13, 2014 Once again, right after 2:00 am the site is slower than molasses in January. There has to be some kind of server issue here for it to happen on such a regular schedule. 1 Quote
The Interpreter Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 No slowdown this morning. Continuous use by this user 0100-0430. Terp, who does what he does because he must. 5 Quote
