I live about 20-30 miles from Indiana Beach.  We had some storms roll through this morning.  I don't know for sure, but that could very well be what caused the branch to break.  My guess, anyway.

    Tragic event. Could not imagine losing my son like that or any other way. Praying for comfort for the family.
