Been hanging onto these for a while and thought I'd share. If you want to see photos of The Beast during construction, from site preperation, announcement, footers scattered through the woods, topping out the first lift, pouring the tunnels, tracking the helix, and the some of the first runs, click HERE !

Enjoy

Right place at right time. My EXTREME love of Beast is well known. I rode it opening day and eventually became Supervisor on it for a few years. The photos were loaned to me by a former Beast employee. I figured why have something like this and not share for others to enjoy. Beast is still one of a kind. It may not be the highest or fastest, but it can't be beat by the originality of it's inhouse design and construction, or the marketing campaign that followed. Beast was an instant classic and in MHO one of the best costers ever built! I was proud to be a part of The Beast crew, if only for a few years! I ask everyone now to give their favorite Beast story!

The Beast for me is a special coaster. It was one of my first coasters (3rd to be exact, the other two were in Disney in Florida, so we'll just say it was my first), and it was the first real coaster that I liked. I just opened my eyes on part of the ride, and I have been a coaster fan ever since.

Those are amazing pictures. Thanks for posting them.

Very nice. Question...there is a pic of the first turn. I heard it was re-profiled after the ride opened. Can you supply any more info on that?

The big news in the press the winter of 79-80 was the rebanking of the third curve (exit from the first tunnel) and the entire helix. Over the years several curves have been rebanked and some dips reprofiled allowing Beast to run faster and smoother. Any Beast revision they ever did IMHO improved the ride, unlike the Wild One at Six Flags America where they reprofiled the back curve and ruined a unique Herb Schmeck feature.

Just so you guys don't think you were shunned, this link was on the front page with the relaunch article. :P

Just didn't want them to get lost, I was so happy to offer these shots up. SOB may be loopless, but Beast is going strong!

I thank KI Central for allowing me over the years to keep in touch with what is going on up there, and allowing me space to share the photos!

Well,

The first roller coaster that I ever rode was Beastie, when I was in 7th grade on opening day, 1998. When I got off The Beastie, I thought it was the greatest ride I'd ever ridden. Then my uncle asked if I'd like to ride another 'bigger' coaster, and I said of course!! We walked under the sign reading The Beast, and I was a little worried that I couldn't see much of this coaster. By the time we got on about a half hour later, I was so nervous I could have puked.

To be honest, all I remember of that first half of the ride was near decapitation on the first tunnel, the long brake shed, the second tunnel, and woods. The ride scared the absolute crap out of me and I wanted off. I'll never forget the thoughts running through my head when I saw that second lift hill ahead. :o

But the moment we slammed through that double helix... thats when it all started. That first ride on The Beast got me hooked for life on coasters, and no matter what trackwork, brakework or re-profilings it sees, it will always be my #1 coaster.

I used to hate The Racer cause of the roughness (depending on the train you're in), so when I saw the lift hill of The Beast I thought "Just like The Racer", so it was another two years after I first saw it until I had the guts to ride it. The most I can remember is trees flying by and when we started up the second lift hill I was thinking "That was fun, but it's over now" and then the helix took place and wow :)

Well, my mother, convinced me to ride The Beast. I was nervous, and I was a child who was scared to ride just about anything. (I waited until like 2 years after I was tall enough to ride Vortex, although SoB was my first looper.)

As far as the ride itself, I don't remember much. This is due to the fact that I had burried my head into my mothers lap. She had to hold my head up to keep it from banging constantly on the restraints. Well, I was pretty much hooked from then on, although still very cautious about riding coasters.

Now, thankfully, I ride every coaster I get the oppurtunity to ride.

  • 3 weeks later...

I have been going to the park every year since I was a baby... this will be my 26th season. I remember crying and crying because I wasn't tall enough to ride The Beast. I had to stay in the kiddie jail. Finally, in '87 I was tall enough to ride. My dad put me in the front seat, told me to hold me hands up as we were going up the first lift hill. I can still remember that first time that I looked over the top of the hill. I was so excited. I remember holding my hands up for the entire ride. I have been hooked ever since. My parents and I have a tradition to grab some LaRosa's pizza and head to The Beast line when we first get in the park. And even when I have went with friends, I still have to get pizza and can't wait to see over the first hill... although I prefer the back seat now.
