Moment of silence

Today is indeed a sad day in Kings Island history.

6/9/1991 - "Black Sunday" at Kings Island. One (intoxicated) woman died when she fell from the Flight Commander ride; two men were electrocuted trying to fish a third from a pond when a circulating pump malfunctioned.

Lets hope nothing like this ever happens again.

I was out of state when it happened. Knew it was in June 1991, but forgot the day. Sad indeed.

I never realized those two accidents both happened on the same day

I remember that day or rather that week well. I had some ballet performances that week around the Kings'mills area. I couldn't believe it when I saw it on the news.

When I went back to rehersals I looked acrossed the parking lot and I could see KI from a distance and I thought it was so sad. I was frightened that the park would take a lot of hits from the media, and it would put KI in a really bad light. Would they ever be the same again?

They were always a park known for their safety record.

I feel bad for the families and friends that lost those three people that day, and of course the ones that lost their lives that day.

I think that KI was able to pick up the pieces and still function as "one of the best in the midwest."

Wow. Sad indeed. I always heard that the two guys were goofing around. I guess you can't always believe heresy, eh?

No...rumors abound with something like this. They have a meeting room back in the security area that is dedicated to the one officer that died that day...very somber indeed.

And, unfortunately for the park, so many little things had to add up for the event to occur.

I wonder if that had never happened, if Flight Commander would still be operating at Kings Island today?

^ The removal of FC really did not have anything to wit the accident. The investigation clearly showed that the guest was intoxicated. Additionally, the restraints were redesigned to prevent it accident from happening again after the 1991 season and the ride was removed after the 1995 season.

I also believe that single riders were not allowed also as a result of the accident (I may be incorrect about that fact).

I really think that it's difficult to say that the removal of Flight Commander had nothing to do with the accident.

I'm certain that it's early demise had everything to do with this loss.

The ride would still carry this stigma to this date if it were still operating.

I've always heard it was removed due to "low ridership" which is likely to be attributed to the incident.

-Ryan -- Who didn't ride the Flight Commander until after the incident.
