  1. Not to mention that the park is land locked. It is... but there's other land nearby that would be suitable for the stadium. It boggles my mind as to why they haven't considered the ginormous Golf Course nearby. If it's a big name PGA course, re-locate it, and then GAM and the 49ers can build/share a parking garage/lot.
  2. I actually remember seeing a film in the Cinema 180 theater. You actually sat on the floor. I sat on that floor myself a number of times... One season they showed a movie featuring a POV ride on The Beast. I remember thinking "Uh, it's about 500 feet away, why not just go ride it for real?"
  3. ... hence my post 7 messages up. ;-)
  4. If I remember correctly, Flight Deck has one of the top riderships in the park, but there's always the chance I'm not remembering correctly. Top three capactity eaters at KI: Kings Island and Miami Valley Railroad Adventure Express Vortex The TRACK appears to be the only part of Vortex getting a re-paint.
  5. Actually, the Puppet Tree sticks out in my mind quite notably. My favorite was the "Rockin Robin" number they did. It was quite cute. Here's some trivia for you. One of the better puppeteers from the Puppet Tree and other KI shows was a guy named Joe Kovacs. You remember (well, because of age, some of you won't...) Wayland Flowers and Madame from the 1970s? Well, Mr. Flowers passed away in the late 80's. However, his estate searched for years to find someone that could carry on the legacy. Joe has gained national attention after being chosen to be the new "master" of Madame. I believe he may have now severed ties with Madame as she has a new puppeteer. His website, as well as hers makes no mention of the team. However, Wikipedia still has a few "words" about it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_kovacs Shaggy
  6. Other than that I can't think of any reasons to have that little thing in the splashdown. How about people They similarly fence the base of most low-to-the-ground coaster drops. See the below pic of Goliath at SFOG. http://rcdb.com/ig3290.htm?picture=52 Every year, KI deals with dozens of people that make their way into the fountains or in small ponds etc on dares, out of stupidity or just plain ignorance. Because of this, a 4 foot perimeter fence, I would suspect, does not pass muster with the park, OSHA, or Insurance providers. And with the seemingly brainless folks that enter secure coaster drop areas (again... see SFOG) every year, parks must take extra precautionary measures. P.S. Fish could swim through fence holes...
  7. To be specific, Skylab was a Huss Giant Enterprise. One of the 3 ever installed. The giants were much larger and each car seated 4 people. Only one remains in operation... well, sporadic operation... and it's located at Canada's Wonderland. Shaggy
  8. OMG this thread makes me feel old. I can remember KI PRIOR to King Cobra ever being installed. And I also remember riding it during it's first year of operation. As a matter of fact, I rode King Cobra's precursor at Kings Dominion... King KOBRA... a Schwarzkopf shuttle loop... You young'ns do know what a Schwarzkopf shuttle loop is, don't you? if you don't, then do your homework. The future of coaster knowledge is in your hands. Shaggy
  9. They can lock out the coaster when a train is in the station. Shaggy
  10. Noticing they have a basket on the crane on the lift hill. Wonder what they are doing? It's been located at different parts of the coaster close to the midway for the past few days. My guess... touch up-painting.
  11. Humor me while I toss my two cents in here... First let me clarify that I have no ill intentions toward the hard-working folk at Holiday World. They are kind, good people. But I also have to admit that I do tend to see well behind the curtain when it comes to HW. But I digress... My personal opinion of Pilgrims Plunge is... eh. First off, water rides tend to fall into that category of attractions that hold a much smaller audience. Much like coasters with loops, a soaking water attraction (unless in a waterpark) likely only attracts a ridership of less than 50% of the gate attendance. With Pilgrims Plunge, you have not only a soaking attraction.. but a large and visually intimidating ride. The visual of the tall drop will likely scare many off... as will the looooong trek to the very farthest corner of the park to ride it. Pilgrims Plunge is, IMO, too big and too cold a ride for HW. In addition, I guess I've been to enough parks to witness the lacking appeal of Diamond Falls, Congo Falls, Mile High Falls, Snake River Falls, etc etc etc. I can't help but recall the fact that they routinely operate with minimal ridership even on the busiest (and hottest) days of the year. HW is a small park. Well, it's a small park that the owner wants to be a big park. So in my opinion, it has a confusing and non-uniform feel. The charming parts are the smaller, more intimate ones. When you step foot into "Thanksgiving" however, it's nearly like stepping into Action Zone at Kings Island... believe it or not, with fewer trees. It doesn't work for me. PP just adds height to that disconnect. But then, a number of things at HW have caused me to scratch my head over the years. One of the biggest "Huh?" reactions I had was the year that Thanksgiving was added. Of course they premiered the multi-million dollar "Voyage" that year, but in addition also added a $3m throw away ride. "Gobbler Getaway" got virtually no attention. Quite frankly, GG is a far more pleasant and enjoyable attraction than Voyage... and fits HW to a "T." But many forget it's even there. IMO, that could have been a capitol expenditure that could (or should) have waited and been promoted as a new attraction in it's own season. I like Holiday World... but I don't love it. I enjoy the rides there... but I don't love them. Call me odd, quirky, old, whatever... but I'm just not enamored. Curious... but not enamored. Shaggy
  12. It appeared to me that they were squeegying (sp?) the standing water. Perhaps a re-surface to the pool? (I'd be surprised to see it painted. Seems to me that it would have been more appropriate to color the concrete when pouring.) The blue crane at the Showplace is, I believe, being used to re-install the sun screen above the ampitheatre's seating.
  13. I attended Dollywood's opening week last year. You should not have problems with crowds, but it does get busier later in the day. Mystery Mine had the longest wait while I was there. Remember to work AGAINST the crowds... word from the back of the park forward. You'd be smart to go to Blazing Fury first... then the Tornado etc etc. When I was there, the Slidewinder, Daredevil Falls, River Rampage and River Battle were all operating. I got soaked to the core on Slidwinder, and it did not mix well with the cool air. Also, if you like "unique", "quirky" things... then I highly recommend taking the time to see "Heartsong." Its dated... but boy do I love it. (Oh play a song for me Applejack, Applejack... darn, now it's stuck!) Shaggy
  14. Paramount should be credited with the re-furbishment of the Festhaus, not Cedar Fair. As a matter of fact, that stained glass window was uncovered for Winterfest. Shaggy
  15. For clarification... Sinbad the character... not the comic. Har har... According to the video, the 1,700 seat ampitheater was full... sure didn't seem that way to me... actually, I've seen the show before and it was never full. Finally, they say that Sinbad will have a new entrance. But aren't they going to be closing that show and utilizing the facility for the new Harry Potter area?
  16. There are rocks being hauled to the area just behind the storage shed. Also, the queue perimeter railing appears to be going up and looks to be wooden ala Maverick. The entrance sign posts have also been stained to match the loading station. They may be waiting for the splashdown to be completely dry, perhaps they will be painting or lining it. However that remains to be seen. Shaggy
  17. I don't know whether to clap or cry at that. What an amazing piece of history. It does answer one question for me... I had always wondered if the Coney Island train had featured the Fort Apache animatronics that were later installed at KI... indeed it did. So to those curious about the old train "show" and what it was like at KI, just watch this video. Great find! Shaggy
  18. Kentucky Kingdom is not open next weekend. http://www.sixflags.com/kentuckykingdom/info/parkInfo.aspx
  19. I rode the Giant about 5 years ago, and I'll be riding it again in a month. (Depending upon my pain threshold that day.) It was, as previously stated, horribly rough. A complete overhaul is no doubt in store. I'd expect GCI is involved. Rather, I HOPE GCI is involved. The Giant is easily one of the most amazing coasters to look at, but worst coasters to ride. It's part of that elite group of woodies that you WANT to succeed, but just don't. Others I'd include: 1. Rattler 2. Mr Twister 3. Hercules 4. Psyclone 5. Ghostrider (Simply because of it's poor upkeep) 6. The Boss 7. Mean Streak 8. Hershey Wildcat 9. and of course... Son of Beast I've not ridden the first two, (I'll let you know about Rattler later this year...) but I have ridden the last 7. And we know what happened to #3 and 4. Rumor has it that Mean Streak is up for a complete overhaul itself in 2010, so it seems GCI may be busy in the future. By comparison, I STRONGLY feel that the best woodies are the most underrated ones. Viper at SFGAM, Thunderhead at Dollywood, Lightning Racer at Hershey, Cyclone at SFOG and Kentucky Rumbler are all some of the least discussed coasters, yet are are absolutely incredible to ride. As far as the wooden coasters I feel are the worst... The Boss is by far the roughest wooden coaster I've ridden. Son of Beast is basically insignificant now that the loop is gone, and Mean Streak is just a waste of valuable CP real-estate. In addition, the most overrated, blown way-out-of-proportion, non rider friendly, and far too intense woodie is hands down Voyage. Shaggy
  20. While I've not been to Valleyfair, I have been to World's of Fun as recently as this past summer. Quite frankly, I could not have been more under-whelmed by that park. It's base-infrastructure is pitiful. It's reminiscent of a park that's long since outlived it's glory days. I got an "Astroworldish" feeling when I was there. Don't get me wrong, it has possibilities... but only with a tremendous amount of overhaul. It has a fun hyper, a fun invert, and apparently getting a much needed woodie. But those three rides cannot make up for the rest. SFGAM has had it's future tossed around so many times over the years, but yet it still remains. With the looming 49ers stadium, that land is far more valuable as real-estate than it ever was as a park. The business head in me thinks they'd be crazy not to sell that and reduce debt. Shaggy
  21. Whats a floppy drive? A stick shift Ba-bump-bump Thank you, thank you... I'll be here all week Shaggy ;-)
  22. Actually there are Kings Island construction photos floating on the web somewhere... including a half built Eiffel Tower. I have several pics on floppy in storage somewhere that show the park under construction. Problem is, they are buried in storage somewhere... oh, and the fact that I do not have a floppy drive anymore ;-) Shaggy
  23. Folks, we have a winner. Now THAT was funny. Shaggy
  24. I too would have Knotts in my stomach if my T-Bar were perilously re-straining me. Shaggy - who thinks he finally coined a Terpy
