Six Flags Discovery Kingdom
CoastersRZ replied to The Interpreter's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
Well, the park has had animals for some time now. I believe that this is more a marketing strategy to better reflect the image that they want to portray for the park. It will likely include new signs and fresh paint and maybe a new attraction or two, but I wouldn`t expect a massive capital improvement like they did the year they christianed Six Flags Worlds of Adventure. They hopefully realized prior management`s mistake with that one. -
"Slip up?" I doubt that they will accidentally slip up and post pictures before they announce the new attraction.

Read the article in the Cincinnati Enquirer.

But, note that that page claims three trains with six cars per train. While Kings Island does indeed own three trains for SoB, they have never had more than two trains on the track at any given time do to alterations to the block layout before the ride opened. Also, last year, they removed a car from the train to try and lighten the load. So the trains last year only had five cars instead of six. That information has not been updated on that page, which is proof that the accuracy of the Premier statement is questionable.

Well, I cleared my cache in Firefox, and that seems to have done the trick. I can now see the new Carowinds logo. I`m not too sure how I feel about the image off to the left of the logo. While better than the Paramount mountain, it still is part of the corporate logo of Cedar Fair Entertianment Co. Why couldn`t they have given each park its own logo like they have in the past. I also don`t get why they want a flag in the logo. But generally, I like the new logo.
-
Alright. I am using a MAC with Firefox installed, and even after refreshing the page, I still see the old logo. (I recently upgraded to the latest flash plug in for Firefox, so it must be some sort of compatibility issue with my Mac.
-
Well, Carowinds2005, unless you are seeing something that I`m not I don`t see the new Carowinds logo on their website. Before the picture of Borg loads, I see a blue background with their Paramount logo displayed in white.

Hey now Ryan. I go to UC, and my program is quite selective. In fact, the Masters of Architecture program which I will enter into this June is ranked #2 in the country, only behind the program at Harvard.

The International Restaurant opened in 1973, the park`s second season. It closed down in the mid 1990`s. But it is still used for special catered events.

Well, there is a great site called Cincinnati Views which has a lot of historical pictures on the city of Cincinnati. They also have lots of historical pictures on Coney Island. The above image shows Sunlite Pool, the turnpike cars, the train ride, Lakeside Pavilion and the canoes on Lake Como. Lakeside Pavilion is still there, and the station for the Turnpike is about where the Spin-A-Ree sits today. Just outside of Lakeside Pavilion and the turnpike station is where the Eli Bridge Ferris Wheel resides today. The train station, is now about where the Tempest/Frog Hopper reside. Here is a picture I took of the Frog Hopper this past summer. The train used to cross under two tunnels for the road into the west parking lot. Those two tunnels are still there, out by Gate 1, which is reserved for group picnics, concert events and special functions at Moonlite Gardens. (The employee lot is also right by Gate 1.) The former Beer Garden is now used as the comissary for all the group sales picnics, and is located immediately behind the Administration building. I`m not too sure of any now and then pictures perse. The above are just ones that I know about that show what it was like back then and how it is now. If you visit Coney, be sure to stop by the Museum gift shop/guest relations in Lakeside Pavilion, by where they have the "wonderful" live shows. (it is the building right next to The Ferris Wheel and Helicopters. They have various pictures of the park from it glory years in there. For more pictures of Coney Island from Cincinnati Views, click here. I also have some picture on my site from Coney in 2005 here and from 2006 here. Let me know if you have any other Coney related questions.

Well, it could be the year after they removed the Wildcat. They removed the Wildcat so that they could put in the Skyride. To give some reference to that postcard, the Ohio River is off to the left, and Lake Como is beyond the trees to the right side. The picture is looking to the west. Beyond the Skyride station in the postcard, is Moonlite Gardens, which is still there. Speaking of Coney, depending on high the Ohio River goes up, it might find itself under a couple feet of water later this week.

Nice postcard! The building to the right of the middle Sky Ride pole was the building that housed the Cuddle Up, Whip and Dodgems. It still stands at Coney today as Moonlite Pavilion

And with that, this topic has run its course.

Yes, I agree with Combat. We would LOVE to see those pictures if you could find the time to retrieve them and scan them in!

Have some patience. It will come in due time. Besides, its not like the announcent will cause the park to open any sooner anyway.

Now now, lets behave. No reason to turn this into a mud slinging duel. Afterall both parks are owned by Cedar Fair, so we should be on the same side. Yes, there will be some rude and incosiderate (to put it bluntly, bad) ride operators at any park you go to. Even Holiday World has some of those. But for the most part, IMO, Kings Island has generally friendly ride operators. I only visited GL back in 2001 when it was known as Six Flags Worlds of Adventure, and on the particular day I visited, I didn`t have any bad interactions with any ride operators.

It is no easy task to simply add in an elevetor to bring the IR up to ADA compliance. Construction and design issues are very complex when adding in an elevator to meet ADA standards. But if they wish to open up the IR as any sort of table service new restaurant, they will likely have to include an elevator in any renovations that they do. Especially with the more stringent ADA codes that are slated to go into effect in the near future. For any one curious as to what the new ADA codes entail, here is a link to the online accessibility guidelines. Chapter ten deals with recreational facilities, and more specifically, section 2 of chapter ten deals with amusement park rides. (Although it is rather boring reading). These ADA standards are not law as of yet, but will be as soon as the Department of Justice adopts them as enforceable standards (who knows when that will be).

Well, technically Kings Island only had one year under complete control of CBS. Viacom and CBS split into two seperate companies at the beginning of 2006. Paramount Parks landed in the slow groth side of the split which was the CBS side of things. CBS then instituted a bare bones approach to staffing the park that resulted them in not opening the front gates at KI until 10am, which caused huge lines at the metal detectors. I think that Paramount did numerous things right, such as pass processing and the use of online feedback surveys. However, some of their ride location placements, themes, and even manufacturers are questionable. But, I think they were smart to focus on the family friendly approach that seems to be grabbing hold of most of the rest of the industry now (with that respect, they were a couple of years ahead of their time).

More X Flight Dismantling
CoastersRZ replied to BoddaH1994's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
Geauga Lake Today, the site that Captain Nemo mentioned above, posted an update today of the dismanteling of X-Flight. Nothing major has happened with the ride. But they sure have accumulated a LOT of track in their parking lot. One has to wonder when they are going to begin shipping out the track and supports to the park that the ride will call its new home. I would imagine that that will occur relatively soon. -
Well, it is just that, a place to eat food in air conditioning during the heat of the summer. Or in heat during the cold during FearFest. The thing that has hurt Festhaus, is that they no longer have shows in there, which is one of the primary reasons why the building was built. As a place to grab some food and take in a show. But alas, they opted to cut the entertainment budget, and convert it into a food only operation as they could bring in more money from foods if they didn`t have periodic shows occuring in there. I agree that a restaurant like Cedar Point`s Macoroni`s would be a welcome addition to the foodservice lineup. It would be a different kind of dining experience at Kings Island, and one which is not currently offered. It has been years since Kings Island offered a sit down restaurant with servers that serve you at your table. I think a sit down restaurant would be a real success, whether it is in the old International Restaurant or elsewhere in the park.

SFDK is coming
CoastersRZ replied to The Interpreter's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
Well, to a lesser extend PKI does face a little (very little based on people`s experiences that I`ve heard about) at SFKK. Granted, not all of PKI`s visitors come from the Louisville area, but I`d imagine that some guests will make the drive up 71 to the park. But that is in by no means the same type of competition that PKD faces with Busch Gardens nearby. As stated above, PKD will continue to see investments in the park to try and persuade people to visit KD instead of Busch. -
What New Attraction Can We Expect From Cedar Fair
CoastersRZ replied to RailRider's topic in Coming Attractions
Why does everyone think that Cedar Fair wants to unload Canada`s Wonderland? True, it is in Canada, but I would assume since the park is outside of Toronto, a large Canadian city, with not much competition, that it would bring in decent numbers. -
Uh, he meant to type 3 1/2-4 hours which, when written another way is 3.5-4 hours. Come on now, do you honestly expect a ride to have an 11.5 hour wait?

KD Season Pass Perks
CoastersRZ replied to Reclaimer's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
That is one thing that I am NOT looking forward too. That just has disaster written all over it, not to mention a public relations nightmare. -
KD Season Pass Perks
CoastersRZ replied to Reclaimer's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
Fan of Beast, they haven`t given pass holders to KI a ticket that was good for a select number of days in several years (like 2003 or 2002). Otherwise, they have done the select number of BAFFD. I refuse to go to the park on those days, because I know how bad it is. Just like the final days of the 2005 season, when each pass holder essentially got a blank check for ten tickets the final weekend of the season (the first weekend in November of that year). The park was mobbed. Add to that they were busy preparing for WinterFest (RiP).
