Went to the park yesterday and I must say it looks better than it has in years. Little by little you are seeing less blacktop. I hope this trend continues. The landscaping looks fantastic. The 2 spots the park needs attention are Coney and Action Zone. Action Zone looks ok but they need to figure out what they are going to do with FD and SOB. A Game Day Grille would go nicely in that section if you ask me. Man I wish the cars and Eagles were back in their places. I am one that thinks Backlot is a fun ride but man is that a bad place to put such an ugly ride. Should have been put on the empty land between SOB, Delirium in Action Zone.

Been to KD several times and I have never been overly impressed by it. I like CP, KI, and Dorney better. Never been to the other CF parks unless you count GL which had the worst food of any park I have been to.

Cedar Fair A "Going Broke Candidate"
pkimike replied to The Interpreter's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
This whole situation is confusing to me. 1. Is it true that CF made a profit in 2008 and is on pace to make a profit in 2009? 2. Is the problem mainly the debt covenants and the thought that they will miss one in the next few years? I know that the sale of land in Canada helped in making a profit in 2009 but won't the decrease in distribution do the same thing next year and will actually be more than the $50 or so million that they made on that land. Also include the operating cuts they have made that will be in place all of 2010. It just seems to me that if a company makes a profit they are ok. I know this is to simplistic. -
CF announces 3Q results

Thanks - Man your fast! Still a little confused - Not used to the language they use. This is what you posted: "So net income this year for the first nine months was $61.7 million dollars, compared to last years $62.5 million." So they have made money? $61.7 million dollars? -
CF announces 3Q results

This may be really stupid but I have looked over the report several times and I can't find the answer to some of my questions. Based on this statement in the press release: "Based on preliminary October results, revenues for the first ten months of the year, on a same-park basis (excluding the impact of Star Trek: The Experience which closed in September 2008), were $912.7 million compared with $983.2 million for the same period a year ago, on 28 more operating days." All I ever see is the comparison of last year to this year. According to the statement above CF made $912.7 million through October this year. So they are down $70.5 million through October this year compared to last. What were their expenditures for 2009? How much money did they lose or make for the 2009 year? Last year I remember them making a small profit. I would like to know what the bottom line was for this year. -
I am planning to go to Knott's Berry Farm sometime during the week of October 17 - 24. I know that Xcelerator will most likely not be open but is GhostRider still down for maintenance? I looked all over and have not found the answer. Thanks to anyone who knows!

Have to agree the Voyage is awesome! I went to HW last Thursday for the first time and it passed El Toro as my favorite woodie. The Legend was great too. I liked the Raven alot but it wasn't on the same level as the other two in my opinion.

That is why I said "slid it under their nose." I had also heard the Intamin Hyper coaster rumor for KD which if it does happen might confirm a B+M compete clause. Thanks for your info.

As many know there are several rumors going around of upcoming coaster projects at Carowinds and KD. I have a couple of questions regarding this: 1. I have heard there is a height restriction at Carowinds. Has anyone else heard this? This could really hinder the kind of coaster they get. 2. I have heard there is a B+M compete clause at KD. I heard the comment that CF slid Dominator in under AB nose. Is this true? Nobody has mentioned these two things in a while. Thanks

Yea, I think it is a nice little water park. I agreed with you that if I was from out of town there would be nothing that would attract me to it. If I was a local with a family I think 49.99 per person for a season pass is a pretty good bargain. When I grew up we paid that per summer for a membership to the local pool and that is all it had. A pool. I think we paid $200 for a family of 4. And yes as long as people go to the park I think they will keep it up. If it doesn't make money they will close it. If it was their desire to close or not take care of it it would be gone already. They could have closed it with the ride side. Thank you for agreeing with me about Kennywood. I love that park. You don't have to have a lot of coasters to be a great park. I was responding to how you said you thought they would build more coasters since that was their reputation. I think that would have been a bad decision for CF.

So based on what you just said. What do you think of the rumors of the big coaster installation at Carrowinds? I would think KI's was well along before the economy hit its trouble. Not the case for Carowinds or CF's other parks. Found the answer to my question. http://www.KICentral.com/forums/index.php?...15378&st=90 -

I think adding a waterpark was a good move. Parks these days need to have a good waterpark. I can only think of a few that don't. Was it a good move at the expense of the animals, no but CF was not going to run a park with animals. They don't do that. The waterpark can be ok as long as they keep it up. Many people join local swimming pools and I think the price of a season pass there is a good value when you look at it that way. Is that enough? I don't know. As the waterpark stands now I don't see people from out of the area going there unless they add something to draw them. Time will tell on that. I also think not adding any coasters was a good decision. They had 10 and were to big as it was. Take Kennywood, they have 5 adult coasters. With more coasters you have more staffing and maintenance. I think Sea World kept GL around. Six Flags bought it and people were excited and went to check it out. But when the dust settled there was no market for a big park with no animals. Add to that they were suddenly owned by someone who was severely in debt, owned three parks in the same state and GL was the one lossing money.
-
I have a friend who lives by GL also. When I told him I went there he thought it was funny. He didn't have much good to say about the park. Keep in mind that this is a friend who is all about Cleveland. I liked the park but the first time I went there I had a feeling CF was going to close it. I actually told the person I was with that I thought CF would move the rides somewhere else. There was just nobody there. I hate that it is gone but you can't keep a park open that is losing money.

Short? Manta will be the 2nd longest flying coaster in the world. 3359 ft. http://rcdb.com/rhr.htm?statistic=3&type=1&design=4 I understand compared to other types of coasters it is a little short. But for a coaster of this type it is long. Dueling Dragons is only 3200 ft. long and that is one great ride.

You are probably right about buildings but could they use things from that area? Like I said I really don't care either way. I was just bringing up something I had heard that at least one other person also has. -

If you are responding to me I would like to know your reason for saying that. I remember there being substantial talk about this a while back but have not heard anything lately. Don't really care if they do but there seems to be some things that were there that would fit in nicely in that area. 1. What substantial talk? I don't remember any. 2. Why move buildings? It makes no sense. 3. For a second step back and listen to what you are saying. You are saying Cedar Fair might re-use 2 year old buildings from a different park on a new roller coaster with a slightly different theme. 1. So you didn't hear it so it didn't happen? 2. The buildings that were rumored to be moved were to be cosmetic. So they might not use whole buildings just things from buildings for themeing. 3. They wouldn't be used for the roller coaster. They would be used in the rivertown area for themeing. It could even be signs. If you don't think a company would use stuff like this for themeing especially a company with money constraints you are crazy. All I asked was, "Wasn't there some talk of bringing the buildings from GL near Villain to be part of the theming and/or line?" You have done nothing to answer my question? I just was bringing up that I heard this possibility and was wondering if it still was.
