August 8, 200719 yr I don't know about anyone else, but I hate the fact school starts the 3rd week of august for a lot of districts, and the fact the pools close labor day. It is the hottest time of the year at that point, and I think they should delay school another month, cut out some of the crap inservice days, and keep the pools and stuff open until fall truly sets in. I know the last several years, it still pushes 90 degrees through mid september, and if the schools and parks would coordinate that, it would be a lot better for all concerned.
August 8, 200719 yr Author In a lot of Kentucky districts, school starts TODAY. Virginia has what is commonly known as the Kings Dominion law, and school cannot, by law, start before Labor Day.
August 8, 200719 yr I remember that...lived in virginia beach from 1992 to 1995-I loved the fact school started after labor day..we could still have a little more time to enjoy the summer while it was blistering hot. When I was in school here in ohio (graduated 84) we always started after labor day..I wish they had never changed that.

Perhaps not the entire month of September, but start school the week after Labor Day. I really always thought it was foolish to start school 3 days before Labor Day, and then have a three day weekend (at least here in Northwest PA, on the shores of Lake Erie). Let that week be used as the last week of vacations so everybody does not cram their typical "summer vacation" week around the 4th of July. Things are so crowded around the 4th, it is almost better to stay home during that week, and spend your money on another week during the summer. You get more value & activity for your dollar. Not to mention, for the area I live in, Lake Erie is still rather chilly (60-67 degrees tops) the first part of June. And the lake effects the land temperature for a good 10 miles inland, especially if the wind is coming from the North.

Returning that week only to get a 3 day weekend right off The Bat was stupid in my opinion.
August 8, 200719 yr Many Schools in Georgia are already back in session. All will be by next Monday. All With Temps in or around 100 Degrees.
August 8, 200719 yr "We lost thousands of dollars" to the rains, club President John Dittrich said. He thought a moment, then 'fessed up. "Hundreds of thousands of dollars," he said. Good move, IMO. I know UC and OSU don't start till September 19th But then again we do go in to June but I don't mind it. All I know is that I still have 42 days before I start back.
August 8, 200719 yr Actually, I recall starting school on Tuesdays when I was little because Labor Day was Monday. Of course Kentucky college schedules aren't so bad. Aug 20th to December 5th-ish then Jan 14th until the first week of May.
