Guest faceoff Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 How many people save money during the off season, in order to pay cash for trip's to amusement parks(hotel, meals, parking) or do you charge everything to a credit card and pay the bill off later? I save the money. Quote
Hank Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 I did neither this year and last - I had no money coming in to save and no money to pay credit cards if I had charged anything - so I stayed home and took virtual rides on YouTube and such. It certainly wasn't as fun, but, like Harry Callahan once said, "A man's got to know his own limitations"! Quote

CoastersRZ Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 Hey, I`m a poor grad student at UC. In all honesty, I haven`t gotten to many parks lately. Last year I swung by Cedar Point a couple of times with my Maxx pass. However, for `08, I didn`t even get a Platinum Pass but just a Kings Island pass. In 2008, depending where my graduate co-op is, I will likely be only going to Kings Island and Coney Island (potentially returning to Coney for my seventh season of work). Quote

pkiboy Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 When I go on trips I pay for gas and hotel but this past year the only parks I mainly went to was Cedar Point and Kings Island. I just bought the Platinum pass I have some vacation time in the spring and it falls when Kings Dominion and Carowinds open and I might get out there and do those parks before KI opens in april and in May i might go to Dorney. I just got back from Dollywood last weekand. Quote

pkiboy Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 CoastersRZ if you loved Winterfest at Kings Island you will love Dollywood it has twice the lights as KI did and it has better shows than KI put on. Dollywood has 3 amazing coasters Thunderhead wich is ranked 1 wooden coaster for several years and Tennessee Tornado one of the best Arrows Ive been on and Mystery Mine is really a different kind of coaster. I think its a combo of Maverick and IJST. Quote

flightoffear1996 Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 Man talk about gas I get 9 MPG and it it takes me 5-6 gallon of gas for a trip to KI which at $3 is almost $20 a gallon. Considering gas is more than that now. I go to KI at least once a week. Quote

Touchdown Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 Well for me, as a poor student, I just ask that my platinum pass be a big part of my Christmas (obviously bought in Oct for the best deal though.) As for saving for the other costs (gas, food, etc) I simply hunker down in the winter and spring (stay at home, dont spend too much money) so that I can go have fun in the summer and especially the fall (ND football games as well as the parks.) I tend not to save for my Kings Island or Cedar Point trips for they are both day trips for me being that I live in Columbus. I also save money by not buying anything in the parks, I got my cooler out in the truck full of drinks and cold cuts. Quote
Touchdown Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 Thats right an Im an Irish Fan (and thankfully this year a Packer Fan too, cant wait for tomorrow) and Toledo is perfectly situated so that I am a day trip away from CP, KI and South Bend. And dont worry, we will be back to being a ranked team starting next year. A perfect storm of a poor recruiting classes by our former coach leading to us fielding a super young team, injury to our QB1 and our coach learning that college football is not always like the NFL (ie you have to teach underclassmen fundamentals) resulted in the CF that was this season. Yet still we have the #1 recruiting class coming in next year . Quote

It made it easier to give up the coffee on those cold mornings when I thought about being at KI on a hot day, and having the spending money to go. Quote
Raptor Jo Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 During the year when I make or win $$ in my horse shows I save up that for next coaster season. Unfortunitely no matter how much we THINK we will need we ALWAYS go over. This year we made an unplanned trip to Holiday World not to mention all the new CP stuff I just had to have The gas and the hotels is the only thing that really eats away at our coaster budget. We only stay at hotels if it is an overnight event or too far to make trip back same day. We easily go to the parks and don't eat there unless it's a special event and we paid for it so food isn't an issue. Since KI is 100 miles from us and CP is 129.5 miles there is no saving on gas. Usually around April when show season starts again our coaster $$ gets used up for the horses or some cowgirl things I think I need. But when cash runs out or gets low thank goodness for our Discover Card! We have proven it does pay to Discover! Quote

CoastersNSich Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 I'm a grad student at Ohio State, which means just about any money I get will be for educational and living expenses. I do plan, however, to get a Platinum pass for next season, and go to Holiday World, hopefully for HoliWood Nights, and quite possibly even Kennywood. A few years ago, I was on co-op as an undergraduate, and some of the money I earned went to park trips. I went to not only the area/Ohio parks, but also Six Flags Great America, Six Flags America, Kings Dominion, Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Dorney Park, Hersheypark, Michigan's Adventure, and a few others. This year, I didn't do much park trips outside the Ohio-Kentucky area, aside from the Washington, DC area, where I visited SFA. After starting fall quarter, my only park visit was to KI in late October. Quote

dare-to-fly Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 My system is to save all of my spare change all summer and winter long, and then at the beginning of the spring, go to the bank and drive the bank ladies nuts with all of the rolls of coins I cash in. This has earned the nickname "The Cedar Fund" which started out as being short for Cedar Point and is now upgraded to being short for Cedar Fair. Other than that, I save as much as I possibly can, and charge the gas to the plastic. To save on lodging, I sleep in the car (not an alternative suitable for everyone I know). Incedently, Wal-Mart is very open about the fact that they don't care if you stay in their parking lots. Meijer has signs posted against it. Yet another reason to hate Meijer, which I typically do. It is also another thing that can annoy you about Wal-mart. darn them. That's always where you end up for anything. Quote

Perhaps that is one of the reasons why the other companies have forbidden this activity in their parking lots... Quote
