Knievel & The Feast

Well now, I must say that I rather enjoyed my stay at Kings Island on May 24th. I took the time to get my picture taken with Dino! Along with a couple of friends. I took pictures of some of the new scenery. ( The new ride names, and construction ) And of course, I watched the Knievel Jump, along with the stunts, and the Skydiving. Which if I may say so, was very cool. I also got a pretty descent movie of the jump from the back of the truck, in the closest spot to the block off area for parking in a row where the entire jump area was clearly visible. All in all, I must apologize if it seems like my article should be in the trip reports column. Here is why it is different. I am referring to food prices.

Upon walking into the park, I could not help but to feel the mood of the day. It was exciting. And very different from recent visits. I managed to ride Firehawk, Flight of Fear, Vortex, The Beast, Backlot S.C., Flight Deck, and I went up the Eiffel Tower. And this was all from park open until about 2 p.m. At about that time, me and my friends were getting pretty hungry, so we decided to go and look for some food. I looked at the food, and then I looked at the prices. LOL I'm sorry, I have nothing but positive emotions for the park, but these prices are a bit uhhh...Pricey.

I am most certainly not bad off on money, but I mean come on, the 2 people that I went with were my guests. I was not going to be willing to pay $5.00 for dippin dots ( just for 1 chosen example ) And we were not going to lose our parking spot for the Knievel jump, so if anyone saw 3 guys wearing black dress shirts walking in front of the park, and in front of the Great Wolf Lodge, and take the cross walk there across Kings Island Drive, and up to Ruby Tuesdays, then congratulations. You saw me walk down the street to pay about the same amount of money for better quality food.

With these food prices, just think of all the nickels Mr. Kinzel missed out on as people either left the park, bought less, or left with memories that will cause them to either bring a cooler or not come at all next time around.

I still think there IS such a thing as overpricing food in a park to the extent of diminishing returns....not just for food per caps, but so much so that it affects future admissions...and Mr. Kinzel and his minions have long since passed it. Interestingly, they are now discounting the front gate more and more, while not doing a thing about the prices most people remember the longest. The bitterness of low quality food and outrageous prices will be remembered long after the sweetness of low admission price is forgotten. (The ten dollar parking...and yes, I know the other places are fifteen and more...doesn't help either...the FIRST thing a guest encounters...how nice.)

I had food at the park Saturday. The park was packed and there was no waiting at Juke Box Diner.

Anyone know what the prices was when it was Paramount? I think what I paid was about the same as it was when

it was Paramount Parks. I can't remember what it was but it's always been too high.

Comparing prices under Paramount Parks and Cedar Fair is difficult, to say the least. It is fair, however, to note that Cedar Fair's food prices seem very high compared to Disney and Universal, and are even higher in many instances than the two most expensive parks in the Six Flags chain: Magic Mountain and Great Adventure. The Pandas Express at Kings Island and Cedar Point are both more expensive than the ones at Six Flags over Georgia or Great Adventure...I haven't been to Magic Mountain for two years now, though hopefully that will change soon.

I don't see why people complain about the food prices at the park. Yes they are high but you don't have to eat there and if you do just eat in moderation. I for one find the prices reasonable compared to other events in the area such as the Reds game.

Even at the Reds game you can bring your own food and drinks in as long as they aren't open.

The first year that the former Happy Days Diner was open, it was very similar in pricing yet it included drinks in the meals. After the first year, the prices were the same but did not include a drink. That basically bumped the price of the meal up from $10 to $14.

By the way, I saw Indiana Jones yesterday and got a medium popcorn and a medium drink for $10. Makes KI's prices seem a little better.

Really? How much would a comparable sized Coke and comparable sized popcorn cost at Kings Island?

Terpy, still shocked at $8.99 for all you can eat cotton candy at Great Adventure (yes...$8.99...and yes, I think that is VERY outrageous, even if I ate cotton candy these days, which I do not...)

I rarely, if ever, see lines of any great length at the food places, but there is always a huge line of people getting their hands stamped for reentry around lunch time... You would think that management would figure this out, but they apparently don't get the basic economic principle that a reduction in demand should result in a lower price. Until they do, they will continue to nickle and dime (oops, forget the "dime") us to death and the parking lot will be the most popular food location at the park.

Well, Ruby Tuesday's was pretty good. And only about a 15 minute walk from the park. Although, I would not recommend walking it with children. But for an adults only day at the park..OH YEAH, I would. Although next time, I think that I will go to Outback Steakhouse.
