coolhandluke
^That looks straight outta RCT, where you are only able to do one track alteration at a time...undo banking so you can straighten, add a section of straight, bank, then turn again... Thank goodness people have figured out how to make track bend and move more cohesively
teenageninja
Rumor has it that Mr. Toomer designed his coasters out of clothes hangers. Its just amazing to see how far things have come (suspended for example) and changes in banking have come. Just imagine if Vortex's first turn was banked completely through, that would have made it much better IMO.
Hank
At some point, someone's gonna say it - so it might as well be me...... If you all think you can do so much better than everyone else, go and start you own company and do it rather than prostalizing about it on a forum. If it weren't for mistakes, we'd have NOTHING!!!! Jasper
^In one of my coaster videos i have it shows Mr. Toomer at the start and he has a piece of what looks like a clothes hanger and he is talking about how you can do so much with it like bend it into many forms. That could be where people got that from.
Cormaster
Well I think the men at Arrow Dynamics were geniuses and yeah The Vortex may have horrible transistions and a lot rougher ride than a modern day B&M steal coaster but thats to be expected. You start with an idea, and then you make it better, than your competitor fix what your doing wrong, etc. Also Coasters have come a long way since the Arrow Dynamic Custom looping battle that happened in the 80's where every park was out to get the tallest, fastest, and most inversions out of every new Arrow that was built. I doubt the last Coaster Arrow built, X has the horrible transistions.
The Interpreter
No, it doesn't. But it is a horrid, horrible, despicable experience. It is better than Ninja at Six Flags Over Georgia. Barely. It was a good idea on paper...but I'd rather visit a pig farm on a hot day than ride X again. Honestly.
Monroe
Roller Coasters can be made out of any thing, even copper.. So a coat hanger is really no big deal.

The Interpreter
I haven't ridden it....yet. I intend to give it one last chance....as soon as I can get out there...
RailRider
Drachen Fire indeed had horrid transitions. It did not have NO ridership, but it did have very few repeat riders. It was first modified, then removed...And it did operate for seven seasons (though it closed in July during its last), after all... Drachen Fire had one of the most unique Arrow layouts. Elements that were not on other rides like the diving corkscrew down the first drop, but yes the ride was extremely rough. Thats why I still say anyone that complains about SoB never road Drachen Fire. Even with its roughness I greatly enjoyed the coaster. Ridership was extremely low, but on a rainy overcast day before its demise I completed 11 circuits without getting out of my seat in the front car. Now that was a beating, but someone had to show the coaster some love because next year it was SBNO...
TheKlockster
OUCH! I don't think this is so much a mistake as it is just how Ron Toomer rolls.
Beast1979
^If life's a roller coaster then he must need a LOT of Asprin!
TheKlockster
Ron Toomer never rode any of his creations. And even though computers and CAD were readily available toward the end of his career, he still preferred to design things the old school way by hand. Jasper
Does X really have that bad of transitions making it rough i would have thought it would have been relatively smooth. If i ever get out to Cali i want to give it a try. Hopefully my summer out of college i can make it over there.
Beast1979
Does X really have that bad of transitions making it rough i would have thought it would have been relatively smooth. I think it's more train design and the basic nature of the coaster from what I've heard.
Jasper
^Yeah i can see where the trains dont have silky smooth rollovers.
ZukoGirl
OUCH! I don't understand why they didn't just leave it banked. We're they tryin be funny
TheKlockster
Before I learned that Ron Toomer just does things that way - I always wondered if they used something like Roller Coaster Tycoon 1 to design it. It looks like someone took a RCT design and fabricated it out of steel. But it's still the best ride in the park.
coolhandluke
Drachen Fire had one of the most unique Arrow layouts. Elements that were not on other rides like the diving corkscrew down the first drop, but yes the ride was extremely rough. That is because, if I remember correctly, DF was designed by B&M because Busch had a contract with them for 2 sit down loopers (along with Kumba). But B&M couldn't handle all the projects at the time, so they handed DF over to Arrow. Hence some B&M-ish elements never seen on an Arrow, notably the cobra roll, appeared. Arrow had to change some other things around from the B&M design they were given (and, as I check Wiki, I notice the original design had a loop around the lift hill a la Kumba) because they just couldn't engineer it properly. As for the other one-of-a-kind elements, I don't know how those came around or who's ideas they were. Props for trying, though
Jasper
Another example of Ron Toomer doing things such as that transfer is on XL-200 in the pretzel turn when you bank into and bank out of it, it can also be very painful
Beast1979
The only thing that hurt me on Magnum XL-200 was the little bugs from Erie. Besides that Magnum is one of my faves. Plus it's given the best Airtime I've ever been on!
