A Christmas Themed opening on my wish list.

A lot of argument has been made about the price point of Winterfest. The truth is, it was VERY expensive to put on that event. Both start up costs and continuation costs. If it was $10 or whatever per person, it would take every bit of 30,000 - 50,000 people in the park to make it profitable. On that note, comparing it to the Beach's Holidayfest in terms of price point isn't a fair comparison. It's apples and organges in terms of the money put into them.

But wouldn't it truly be a wonderful world if Mr. Kinzel at a stock-holder meeting would say "Gentlemen, to h*ll with profit...this is our Christmas present our loyal customers".

And about five seconds after that, the creditors would demand his head...

Covenants and debt load ratios, etc., can do that to a park or park chain.

Mr. Kinzel can no longer make decisions like that without a great deal of scrutiny.

Heck, if the creditors didn't demand his head, the unitholders would. "First you cut OUR distribution, then you give the customers a present at Christmas? I think not." I can hear them now. And given that Mr. Kinzel likes his slot at the top of Cedar Fair...

Lastly BRING BACK THE TRAMS

YESSSSSS!! They even still have them!

yeah, i saw them last time i rode drop zone just sitting there. seems like a waste. they have been out in the open for a long time....

Operating trams would require paying employees to drive them, paying for gas to fuel them, and there's no return-profit on them. Besides, Kings Island's parking lot isn't that big- walking a few minutes won't kill you ;)

Regarding the park hosting a Winter event, it is possible- Cincinnati Zoo and The Beach Waterpark have already proven that entertainment attractions like amusement parks in this climate can host successful events. However, Kings Island's Halloween event is extremely large scale, and I recall it being a hassle to install Christmas decorations while the Halloween event was still operating. The prices for tickets were also a turn-off, especially when considering a season-pass holder could get into the park for free all of 2005, and now they were expected to pay $25- and not even be able to ride any of the major rides or do the "normal" Kings Island stuff.

My family visited Winterfest for one night in 2005, and we had a blast. Some of the highlights were Holiday Illuminations on Swan Lake (why can't the park do something like this with Eiffel Tower during the summer?), Santa's Toy Factory Musical, Home for the Holidays Parade, and the simple, yet entertaining, Scrooge's House. Festhaus also looked really nice with the Christmas-color banners hung from the ceiling (I remember they were not originally removed and remained during the season, which actually looked real nice). There were still some disappointments, however- White Christmas Express proved to be rather boring, and Ice Skating on the Fountains was closed the night we visited. However, overall, we had a great time and would've returned in 2006. If it was to return in the next few years, we'll be there for at least one of the nights.

I agree...I think it took longer waiting for the tram...then getting on and off than it does just to walk.

You were just on the wrong train with the wrong people...and maybe the wrong "Johnny"...for my family this was probably the highlight of our trip! We cheered the guy along and sang with him and he seemed to give back 110% since he had someone to "bounce off of". :)

I guess it's like some of the Haunts...you have to hit them at the right time.

Sufficient, reliable staffing would be a major problem. So would readying the park for such a short duration. I doubt it would be worth the relatively few nickels it would generate. Note that other parks have started such events and ended them...from Great Adventure's Winter Lights to Camden Park's Holiday Event. Yes, other parks have started them, but note that Holiday In The Park has not expanded at Six Flags as quickly as originally anticipated. How much of that is due to Flags' current financial condition and how much due to disappointing results cannot accurately be divined by outsiders.

  • 2 weeks later...

Does anyone know if the Eiffel Tower Christmas tree is still in storage? It still would be nice to see the tree lit up over the Holidays as you drive by on the Interstate.

Marketing and price are keys to a successful event. A successful scaled back Winterfest event could be profitable if well thought out, just as the original Winterfest once was. With Haunt running longer in the season, it may be a bit of a challenge to transform the select venues of the park, but with careful planning and some public input, think it still might be possible, although probably very unlikely in my lifetime. Santa's Toy Factory will always remain one of the top shows in the history of the park - gotta love those dancing reindeer and singing penguins, not to mention the elves.
