A decade of Roller Coasters

Featured Replies

Very nice video Captain!! Happy New Year to you as well, hope everyone on KIC has an amazing 2010.

Well first of all "HELLO" Captain it has been a long while. And ty for posting that video. I suppose The Racer will always be my fav of all coasters. However the Screamin Demon from the 80's will always reign supreme.. WAITTTTT is that not from a Taco Bell Commercial?

My fav memory of the last decade is riding SOB on gold pass sneak preview night. Amazing ride.

SAVE S.O.B.

My fav is going to Hanna Barbera Land and riding every single ride in one hour.

Thanks for sharing! Very interesting video. I enjoyed watching.

My biggest moment was last year when I first rode Vortex, my first looping coaster, and ending up riding Firehawk, Flight of Fear, and Son of Beast the same day. A year later I watch my friend go on his first looping coaster, The Vortex!

Recap of what we saw this decade.

2000- First coaster over 300'. First wooden coaster over 200'. Only modern looping wooden coaster. Steel coasters speed pass 90mph. and woodies speed pass 70mph. Giovanola starts making coaster and they're good. Just months after Millennium Force opens, an even bigger coaster opens in Japan (Steel Dragon 2000.) Top coasters such as Superman Ride of Steel& Millennium Force open.

2001- Vekoma introduces the flying dutchman. Déjà Vu! S&S Thrust Air coasters appear. Top coasters such as Nitro & Expedition GeForce open.

2002- B&M and Zamperla Introduces their version of a flying coaster. The world's first 10 Inversion roller coaster opens. Custom Coasters International (CCI) shuts down. B&M Builds it's tallest coaster rising 9' taller than the next tallest B&M (239'.) Intamin's inverted impulse coasters get even more twisted when Wicked Twister opens with two twisted towers. Arrow Dynamics came back one last time when they built X, also the Multidimensional coaster is introduced. Intamin introduces the hydraulic launched coaster. Top coasters such as X, Xcelerator, & Silverstar, open.

2003- Intamin opens it's first Aquatrax. Coaster break the 400' barrier when Top Thrill Dragster opens at 420'. Coasters speed pass 100mph. when Top Thrill Dragster opens at 120mph. Top coaster such as Top Thrill Dragster, Thunder Dolphin, Nemesis Inferno, and Ozark Wildcat all open.

2004- B&M Builds it's smallest coaster Dæmonen at 92'. Revenge of The Mummy opens at Universal Orland and California. Many Spinning coasters open this year. Maurer Söhne opens it's first X-Car coaster- Sky Wheel. Top coasters such as Revenge of the Mummy(s), Storm Runner, Thunderhead, & Silver Bullet all open.

2005- Intamin wows the world once again when Kingda Ka debuts as the tallest and fastest coaster standing 456' and 128mph. Intamin also made the smallest coaster with a tophat- Kanonen. Gravity Group appears. Hydra The Revenge opens was one of B&M's weirdest coasters. Busch Gardens Africa restarts the dive machine trend when SheiKra opens as the only one with an inversion and the tallest/fasted and with a never before seen splashdown element. Italian Job pops up at Kings Island and Canada's Wonderland and later opens at Kings Dominion. Top coasters such as Kingda Ka, SheiKra, Hades, & Hydra all open.

2006- S&S and Meisho build Eejanaika the second Multidimensional coaster. El Toro and Voyage fight to be the best wooden coasters of all time. Disney and Vekoma builds Expedition Everest. B&M builds two Goliaths, both smaller mega coasters but are some of the best. Top coasters such at Patriot, Goliaths, El Toro, and Voyage all open.

2007- Furius Baco opens as Intamin's first wingrider. Busch Gardens Europe opens Griffon an even bigger version of the dive machine standing taller than all others and has an extra immelman. Zierer opens it's first tower launch coaster- Wicked. Geauga Lake closes. Inferno & Kirnu open as the world's first Intamin Zac-spins. Maverick opens with great reviews. Top coasters such as Phaethon, Mystery Mine, Maverick, Griffon, & Troy, all open.

2008- Hard Rock Park opens, and closes. Steel Hawg opens at Indiana Beach as the world's steepest coaster with a 111º drop. Top coasters such as Fahrenheit, Evel Knievel, Dominator, Mammut (wood), Piraten, Ravine Flyer II, & T-Express all open!

2009- Ring Racer opens as the world's fastest coaster at 138.4mph but later closes. Mack builds it's first LSM coaster at Europa Park- blue fire Megacoaster. Vekoma introduces the Stringray, a new flying coaster. Mumbo Jumbo beats Steel Hawg by 1º. Saw The Ride opens as the 'scariest coaster ever.' Top coasters such as Diamondback, El Toro, blue fire Megacoaster, Prowler, iSpeed, Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, Manta, Terminator Salvation, Saw:The Ride, & Fireball all open!

In the early years of this decade, we saw many revolutionary things that changed the coaster world. But as the years went on, coasters got smaller and less revolutionary but were better than ever. I think this decade has taught us that bigger isn't always better (although it is good ;))

So Hard Rock Park opens and Closes? Why?

Yes, Hard Rock park opened in 2008 for a few months than closed cause of financial problems. Than it reopens with new management as Freestyle Music Park in 2009.

Of course in the past century, the world of coasters had its ups and downs - in the early 1900s there were thousands of roller coasters, and now there are nearly only the hundreds. This decade has made so many improvements; probably the best decade since the golden age.

^Thousands in the 1900's and only hundreds today? do wha?!?!? There are more coasters today in the world then there ever have have been...There are a combine total of 4,782 roller coasters on Earth.

I've met so many amazing people from this website, from other websites, from KI and from other amusement parks, traveled to so many new parks and experienced so many different things in the world of amusement parks, from rides to events to random things to tears, laughter, photos, inside jokes, road trips, and music.. I don't even know where to begin with my biggest moment. I can't even begin to thank every one of you that made my 2009 trips worth talking about, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart. :)

Wow DropZone99! My original idea was to make a 10 minute video of recaps but I felt that I gave the same message with the short one I made. Happy New Year

Wrong. There is 4,783 roller coasters in the world. You forgot one, the best one of them all!

But wouldn't there be 4,784 because of Blue Two? Didn't he make another coaster?

Nemo, awesome video by the way.

Doesn't look outstanding?

Huh?

http://rcdb.com/4274.htm?p=23221

i shouldnt have said outstanding, it actually is visually awesome, but what i meant was it wasnt outstanding in height, size, speed, or any other various factors. I know that they arent measures of how awesome a ride is, it still at least shows you the thrill level to an extent (with exceptions, as noted). Point is, i was showing that at least i thought he was confused about which el toro and when it was installed. Mainly record breakers, and really outstanding/unique coasters were mentioned, then that one.

Nemo, awesome video by the way.

Thanks, video took quite a while to make.

2009 - Gabe does a mock 'stop yelling at Brittany' video and actually cries about Son of Beast, pouring out his true feelings for the ride. He won 3 Tony awards and no one cares.

Would that be the same Tony that used to work at Carowinds and before that was at Kings Island, to which he returned?

Terpy, who just HAD to

My mommy cares! heh.

People outside on KIC even know me as the leave Son of Beast alone guy.
