i live fairly close to Kings Island, but i haven't been out that way in a while... so, i was just wondering..

have they done or said anything about the construction of the Kings Island sign by the road?

one of these days, i wanna go over to the area and see how big the tunnel thing is, since theres no object to base the perspective off... it looks fairly big, but i wanna see how big smile.gif

since they opened a movie theater down in cincinnati and the one in milford, i haven't gone to the KI movie theater in a long time...

Overbudget from BB? Ahh....I doubt it. PKI is owned by Paramount which is owned by Viacom. The money within the company CAN be tossed around if Viacom/Paramount wishes. Besides, why would an amusement park not have a sign?

Not to be offensive, but no sign because of no budget? Ludacris.

You must not know business.

Every project is given a budget. Or in order to build/buy things one must present what they want and why they want it. Basically what benefit the company will get out of investing their money in something. They won't just say yeah... we'll pay for BB to be built. They ask for quotes and budget this amount of money aside to pay for it. This bases the rest of the budget for the year in order to still make money. Paramount isn't going to want to pay more than they originally were quoted on unless it is absolutely needed to get the project done and opened on time, or close to it.

Now the sign... it came down unexpectedly. There never was money set aside for the sign because no one knew they would have to build a new one. It wasn't insured since it wasn't likely they needed it. As far as I know they are still getting one and it is coming out of Kigns Island money, not so much as corporate money. Hard to imagine that since Kings Island money basically is corporate money. Anywho. We'll get out sign... even if it is just one of those portable ones with the flashing lights and the arrow on top. Like you see at a flea market.

I heard they're not going to have a sign for next year because BB is going overbudget.

Let me guess...you heard this from "some guy" or a "read some where but forget".

How could BB be overbudget when construction just started? If they have gone overbudget already with the framwork for TT and taking the speed slides down, somebody did some really bad budget planning.

And more than likely, the sign was covered by insurance.

Oh, God yeah. All that it would take would be a drunk guy to hit it in the middle of the night who doesn't have insurance. Plus, pretty much everything in the park is insured for the same reason that the sign was -- freak accidents like that. Imagine if the tornado had come in and done some serious damage to a lot of things. It could have costed millions of dollars.

King's Island WILL have a sign next year. Insurance probably will probably cover the amount the sign was worth or something, then PKI will probably just go overboard and spend a few more dollars for something that will get EVERYONE'S attention from the highway.

Insurance. Do you really think they insured there freaking sign? Possible, yes. probable. no.

Yeah right. I doubt there is one square inch of that park proprety that isn't insured. Lets think about this, if someone happened to be walking by the sign, and somethign fell off it and hit them, and the sign wasn't insured, then that person wouls sue the park for millions and they would win. Its an open and shut case. I guarantee that sign is insured, considering that they just replaced the screens in it when last year, or a couple of years back? For a color led screen, its a cool 6.2 million for the same style video boards that stadiums have, the same kind that PKI used to have in their sign, with the only exception being that theirs was black and white. At 6.2 mills, its way cheaper to insure the sign, rather than pay for it outright.

Clearly you have never worked there. Viacom - or any large business for that manner - is pretty cheap when it comes to this stuff.

well they are going to replace it with a LCD or an LED. they had invested in the sign when they were putting in the new one. they put the new one in during the 2003 season and before. before the sign went down 6 months ago it was being put in during june of the 2003 season

What are you talking about PKI_man? The park replaced the 30 year old message board portion of the sign for this season. I believe they replaced it this past January. Obviously, they will now have to replace the entire sign, including what they just replaced this past winter. All I can say is I hope there is a sign that shows the time, temperature and the Kings Island logo when the park opens in April. It felt wierd leaving the park and not seeing the flashing lights from the sign.

It will be LED no LCD. LCD's are way to fragile for that and the glass panes that hold liquid crystals would weigh a frickin ton. They use LED's because they are cheap, lightweight, use very little power, and the average led will operate for over 100,000 hours before they have to worry about changing them. Which means that even if they kept the sign on 24x7x365, they wouldn't have to worry about replacing the LED's for around 10-11 years.

As I remember, they put the upgrades to the old sign in, during winter in the off season. The only thing that happened to the sign this past summer, was when it collapsed in some serious winds from the brutal storms that always come to Cincy in summer.

Just to echo fyrfyter, LCD's are so fragile that just talking a pen and lightly pusing the tip againts it can pernamatly damage it. Try it with a cheep calculator, but I'm not responsible if you have to pay for it. tongue.gif
