McSalsa
Time for yet another poll! OK, there have been a couple topics here on KIC comparing KI to other parks, noteably Kings Dominion and Cedar Point, mostly. But I have decided to make another "Kings Island vs." poll. The opponent: Holiday World. But wait? Doesn't KI have like, 14 coasters (counting SOB but not Surf Dog), versus 4 for HW? That's unfair! OK, well, this "battle" will be a little different...GO EQUALIZER!!! (Equalizer sucks up Diamondback, Vortex, Flight of Fear, Firehawk, and anything from KI I couldn't find a suitable HW opponent for) OK, now that that's over, here are the individual "battles". KI is on the LEFT, HW on the RIGHT. Highlight, delete loser, scratch-out loser, etc etc. Just like the "other" polls of this type. "SMALL" WOODEN COASTER (Woodies under 90ft) The Racer vs. The Raven MILLENNIUM WOODIES (Both opened in 2000, both have "dips" before first drop!) Son of Beast vs. The Legend SIGNATURE WOODIES (This one is obvious...) The Beast vs. The Voyage DROP/LAUNCH RIDE Drop Tower vs. Liberty Launch RAPIDS RIDE White Water Canyon vs. Raging Rapids LOG FLUME Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown vs. Frightful Falls Log Flume SWING RIDE Zephyr vs. Hallowswings SPIDER/MONSTER/ETC RIDE Monster vs. PR Midnight Ride SCRAMBLER BATTLE KI Scrambler vs. Scarecrow Scrambler CAROUSEL BATTLE Grand Carousel vs. Star Spangled Carousel TRAIN BATTLE KI & Miami Valley Railroad vs. The Freedom Train SHOOT-EM-UP DARK RIDES Boo Blasters vs. Gobbler Getaway DODEMS Dodgems vs. Rough Riders KIDDIE COASTERS Great Pumpkin Coaster vs. The Howler STAFF (Overall Performance, includes friendliness and efficency) KI Staff vs. HW Staff PARK "LOOKS" (Which one looks better? As in scenery, theming, cleanliness, etc etc.) Kings Island vs. Holiday World VALUE (Get-in-price, food prices, etc etc...) Kings Island vs. Holiday World OVERALL Tally up all the points and declare winner. Some of these will be no-brainers. Others...you will have to probably think or make a tough call. Enjoy the poll. If you don't like it, there is a back button.
The Interpreter
...runs for the back button (whilst contemplating a great adventure...perhaps to Cedar Point)...
Pillsberry123
Honestly I don't think you can do a "ride vs ride" or "feature vs feature" comparison of Holiday World against Kings Island. Two different parks completely. I think you could do one with Cedar Point vs. Great Adventure, but since Holiday World only has 4 coasters it's impossible to compare unless you look at the entire picture. I'll just state my opinion by saying that both parks are equal in their own right, but Holiday World is much better for families as well as more affordable than Kings Island. From that standpoint Holiday World is better. However, Kings Island offers more to do, as well as has more to do for everyone. From that standpoint Kings Island is better.
McSalsa
My Picks... "SMALL" WOODEN COASTER (Woodies under 90ft) The Racer vs. The Raven Racer is far from bad. But The Raven is amazing. MILLENNIUM WOODIES (Both opened in 2000, both have "dips" before first drop!) Son of Beast vs. The Legend As you may now, SOB has never been open for me to ride every time I visit KI, so Legend wins by default. But since Legend has a great drop, massive air, interaction with other rides, tunnels, head choppers, and more... SIGNATURE WOODIES (This one is obvious...) The Beast vs. The Voyage Beast, I am so sorry. I love you but Voyage is simply even better. HW sweeps the woodies! DROP/LAUNCH RIDE Drop Tower vs. Liberty Launch I have ridden neither, but my reasons for it? Drop Tower looks scary. Liberty Launch looked weak. Scary beats weak any day for a thrill seeker. RAPIDS RIDE White Water Canyon vs. Raging Rapids Raging Rapids is good fun and has great theming, but White Water Canyon gets you soaked nearly 100% of the time and really feels like a river! LOG FLUME Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown vs. Frightful Falls Log Flume I have never ridden RFYLCB, so FFLF wins by default. SWING RIDE Zephyr vs. Hallowswings Both of these rides are shockingly beautiful, but Hallowsings gets the edge for being just a wee bit more fun. SPIDER/MONSTER/ETC RIDE Monster vs. PR Midnight Ride Haven't ridden PR Midnight Ride...so for now, Monster wins. SCRAMBLER BATTLE KI Scrambler vs. Scarecrow Scrambler I have ridden KI's scrambler but it's been a long time...I won't vote on this right now. CAROUSEL BATTLE Grand Carousel vs. Star Spangled Carousel Another ride at HW I missed and don't want to unfairly judge...but I have ridden GC... TRAIN BATTLE KI & Miami Valley Railroad vs. The Freedom Train Kings Island's Railroad does more than go in a circle around the kids area, and I have actually rode it. Plus, it's bigger. SHOOT-EM-UP DARK RIDES Boo Blasters vs. Gobbler Getaway Another one I missed at HW...so KI wins by default... DODEMS Dodgems vs. Rough Riders I have rode neither. KIDDIE COASTERS Great Pumpkin Coaster vs. The Howler See above. I rode Top Cat's Taxi Jam back in 2000 though! STAFF (Overall Performance, includes friendliness and efficency) KI Staff vs. HW Staff WHAT!?!? ARE YOU CRAZY!?!? No, it's just I feel Kings Island's staff was just as friendly as Holiday World's, did a better job dispatching the rides, and was more energetic and had better spiels. It's an upset! PARK "LOOKS" (Which one looks better? As in scenery, theming, cleanliness, etc etc.) Kings Island vs. Holiday World Holiday World is beautiful, but there are dull sections, such as Thanksgiving. So does Kings Island, with Action Zone. It comes down to this- Holiday World is better themed, and thus wins. The great-looking Halloween and Christmas areas really helped. VALUE (Get-in-price, food prices, etc etc...) Kings Island vs. Holiday World Time for some math: KI 4 KI Tickets: $119.96 (I buy from Kroger!) Parking: $10.00 Lunch: $50.00 Total: $179.96 Holiday World 4 HW Tickets: $147.96 Parking: $0.00 Lunch: $25.00 Total: $172.96 HW Wins...barley. OVERALL Kings Island- 8 Wins Holiday World- 5 Wins KI WINS!!! In spite of losing all the "coaster battles". Although, I had to give free points to KI because I didn't ride some of Holiday World's flatrides. These are my opinions, yours may differ. Since HW does only have 4 roller coasters, I decided to ignore all of KI's major steel coasters, so for this poll, Diamondback is a non-factor, Vortex doesn't mean anything, etc etc. Although in real life, that isn't true. Then again, I didn't compare Splashin' Safari to Boomerang Bay, the Kids Areas, etc etc...perhaps this poll is "incomplete"... PS: I won't do a CP vs. SFGadv poll for now, but someone might. I have not been to either park.
The Interpreter
In reality, every day people do decide where to spend their nickels. And they don't pretend certain coasters don't exist as they make their decisions. They do remember what there is to do, what things cost, how much fun they and/or their kids have, how far it is to the park, etc.
Guest rcfreak339
I'll bite... "SMALL" WOODEN COASTER The Racer vs. The Raven Racer is a classic smooth wooden coaster that many can't beat. MILLENNIUM WOODIES Son of Beast vs. The Legend Ride Son of Beast then ride Legend...You will see why I voted Legend. SIGNATURE WOODIES The Beast vs. The Voyage This summer from my Voyage experince, it has has become un-rerideable. Don't get me wrong Voyage is awesome but it's not the smooth incredible coaster I remember from 2006 or 2007. DROP/LAUNCH RIDE Drop Tower vs. Liberty Launch Liberty Launch weak? I think not. It gives insane airtime and is much, much better then the other S&S towers I have been on. RAPIDS RIDE White Water Canyon vs. Raging Rapids Well themed and very fun..something White Water Canyon is lacking. LOG FLUME Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown vs. Frightful Falls Log Flume Great themeing and more eventful then FFLF TRAIN: KI & Miami Valley Railroad vs. The Freedom Train It's nice that someone over the age of 5 can ride KIMVR SHOOT-EM-UP DARK RIDES Boo Blasters vs. Gobbler Getaway I really like the creativity in the ride, it's well themed and fits the Thanksgiving area well. STAFF (Overall Performance, includes friendliness and efficency) KI Staff vs. HW Staff Again, it's a hard one...I choose KI's stafe just because I have never had a truly bad experience with them. PARK "LOOKS" (Which one looks better? As in scenery, theming, cleanliness, etc etc.) Kings Island vs. Holiday World Each section is beautiful and the overall atmosphere is great at Holiday World. Kings Island and Holiday World are bot incredible parks. Both with amazing rides, shows, staff and atmospheres.
CincyMan98
What I've seen from you guys is that The Voyage isn't #1 like it used to be. Is that true to a lot of people here?
The Interpreter
I honestly do not believe that coaster rides any differently than it did when it was new. Then again, it was not number 1 for me then. It isn't now, either....
Pillsberry123
I honestly do not believe that coaster rides any differently than it did when it was new. Then again, it was not number 1 for me then. It isn't now, either.... Amen to that. For me the only question that was easy for me to answer in the poll was the "signature wood coaster", and for me the choice would obviously be The Beast. The Voyage is fun in places, but it's way too drawn out to be a great coaster imo. The airtime on the first 4 hills is fun. The triple-down is fun. The rest of the ride is not. The non-stop speed takes too much of a toll on the rider, and I'd much rather ride the Raven... I personally can't wait for the Timberliners to come and smooth the ride out.
Dbfan
"SMALL" WOODEN COASTER (Woodies under 90ft) Racer -Classic MILLENNIUM WOODIES (Both opened in 2000, both have "dips" before first drop!) Son of Beast -Son of Beast in the year 2000 was much better than legend, not things have changed... SIGNATURE WOODIES (This one is obvious...) Voyage -My number 1 woodie. DROP/LAUNCH RIDE Drop Tower -Taller and faster. I like drops more than launches. RAPIDS RIDE White Water Canyon -Its in the middle of the woods with nothing around, gives more of a wilderness feel. LOG FLUME Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown -I like frightful falls, but once again, It was ruined by Legend, the whole thing seems to be just around a coaster with little trees. SWING RIDE Hallowswings -Better ride SPIDER/MONSTER/ETC RIDE Cant vote, havn't ridden both SCRAMBLER BATTLE ^ CAROUSEL BATTLE Grand Carousel -Its old and with carousels, the older the better, TRAIN BATTLE KI & Miami Valley Railroad SHOOT-EM-UP DARK RIDES Gobbler Getaway -Boo Blasters is still scooby cardboard, with those loud buzzing sounds. DODEMS Have not ridden both. STAFF (Overall Performance, includes friendliness and efficency) HW Staff PARK "LOOKS" (Which one looks better? As in scenery, theming, cleanliness, etc etc.) Kings Island -Best park entrance around. VALUE (Get-in-price, food prices, etc etc...) Equal -A discounted KI ticket and just lunch is about equal to a Holiday World ticket and food. Of course you get the unlimited soft drinks at HW. OVERALL 9 KI and 5 HW. -I would say KI wins, but some topics were not covered, and none of it mentioned the waterpark, the better half of Holiday World. They have the best waterpark, best slide, best food, and best unlimited soft drinks. So I say tie.
Beast1979
I took out the ones where I haven't ridden both. Guest Millennium
I will be the least biased as possible. "SMALL" WOODEN COASTER (Woodies under 90ft) The Racer vs. The Raven If you have ridden Raven at night, then you know it kills The Racer. MILLENNIUM WOODIES (Both opened in 2000, both have "dips" before first drop!) Son of Beast vs. The Legend Legend is one of the most underrated coasters I've been on. Tally at HWN this year--71. SIGNATURE WOODIES (This one is obvious...) The Beast vs. The Voyage It's tough but the Voyage kills Beast in airtime and they are equally great at night. DROP/LAUNCH RIDE Drop Tower vs. Liberty Launch Liberty Launch isn't anything special to me. RAPIDS RIDE White Water Canyon vs. Raging Rapids I remember enjoying RR more this year, but Dollywood's kills them all. LOG FLUME Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown vs. Frightful Falls Log Flume For the awesome view of Legend an the trip in the dark, this is a really fun ride. SWING RIDE Zephyr vs. Hallowswings Hallowswings is the best swing I've been on. SPIDER/MONSTER/ETC RIDE Monster vs. PR Midnight Ride SCRAMBLER BATTLE KI Scrambler vs. Scarecrow Scrambler CAROUSEL BATTLE Grand Carousel vs. Star Spangled Carousel TRAIN BATTLE KI & Miami Valley Railroad vs. The Freedom Train SHOOT-EM-UP DARK RIDES Boo Blasters vs. Gobbler Getaway // Equal DODEMS Dodgems vs. Rough Riders KIDDIE COASTERS Great Pumpkin Coaster vs. The Howler STAFF (Overall Performance, includes friendliness and efficency) KI Staff vs. HW Staff PARK "LOOKS" (Which one looks better? Coney Islander
My first ever visit to Holiday World was yesterday. "SMALL" WOODEN COASTER (Woodies under 90ft) The Racer vs. The Raven The Raven, for sure. MILLENNIUM WOODIES (Both opened in 2000, both have "dips" before first drop!) Son of Beast vs. The Legend The Legend. SOB might of won, with its old trains, and its loop. SIGNATURE WOODIES (This one is obvious...) The Beast vs. The Voyage Voyage's back seat, this is very close. Voyage's front seat, not so much. DROP/LAUNCH RIDE Drop Tower vs. Liberty Launch RAPIDS RIDE White Water Canyon vs. Raging Rapids Didn't ride Raging Rapids. LOG FLUME Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown vs. Frightful Falls Log Flume I really, really enjoyed Frightful Falls. The pitch black tunnel is really good, and spooky! SWING RIDE Zephyr vs. Hallowswings Didn't ride Hallowswings. SPIDER/MONSTER/ETC RIDE Monster vs. PR Midnight Ride The second spinniest ride I've ever had. (Coney Island's Trabant wins first.) SCRAMBLER BATTLE KI Scrambler vs. Scarecrow Scrambler Didn't ride Scarecrow Scrambler. CAROUSEL BATTLE Grand Carousel vs. Star Spangled Carousel Didn't ride Star Spangle Carousel. TRAIN BATTLE KI & Miami Valley Railroad vs. The Freedom Train Didn't ride The Freedom Train, but did see its atmosphere. In my opinion, atmosphere is the most important part of a train ride. SHOOT-EM-UP DARK RIDES Boo Blasters vs. Gobbler Getaway Gobbler getaway left me very happily surprised. I guess Boo Blasters is more "impressive," but I like this theme better. (At least for a family friendly ride.) DODEMS Dodgems vs. Rough Riders Missed Rough Riders. KIDDIE COASTERS Great Pumpkin Coaster vs. The Howler The Howler hurt! Think of Arrow transitions, only much worse. And The Howler had no air time, whereas The Great Pumpkin Coaster has quite a bit. STAFF (Overall Performance, includes friendliness and efficency) KI Staff vs. HW Staff I've generally had very good experiences with each park, but one bad experience at KI's Haunt means KI wins. And, I know this isn't the staff's decision, but whenever Voyage broke down (twice), people in line were given a choice of going to the front of the line on either Raven, or Legend. I personally think this is wonderful. PARK "LOOKS" (Which one looks better? As in scenery, theming, cleanliness, etc etc.) Kings Island vs. Holiday World You can't easily beat the Eiffel Tower! VALUE (Get-in-price, food prices, etc etc...) Kings Island vs. Holiday World Much more affordable... And eating didn't mean bankruptcy. My Bonus Question- Waterparks Boomerang Bay vs. Splashin' Safari Both parks are incredibly busy, and have hour long lines, but Splashin' Safari is less of a concrete jungle, and has much more variety. OVERALL Tally up all the points and declare winner. Holiday World: 8 Kings Island: 5 I still say Kings Island wins, since most of Kings Island has not been included in the poll. I was very pleasantly surprised at how much Holiday World has to do. Spent the whole day doing stuff, and still missed half the Fourth of July Section, most of the Waterpark, and most of the shows. (Though, Dive was great.) I actually enjoyed Raven more than I did Voyage!

ahank
Holiday World wins. Why? Wildebeest. Basically this. But. I can't compare the two. They're both completely unique experiences. Holiday World offers the charm of a small, family-owned park, but still offers a few world class roller coasters, flat rides, and a much-much-better-than-average water park. Kings Island offers more world class thrills and flat rides than Holiday World, but doesn't have the charm (or the water park) that Holiday World does. But really, you can't compare these two parks. It's impossible.

jcgoble3
Since Terpy bumped this and I'm bored, I'll answer the poll. "SMALL" WOODEN COASTER (Woodies under 90ft) The Racer vs. The Raven - Raven has far better airtime and is not nearly as rough. Just wish it was a little longer. MILLENNIUM WOODIES (Both opened in 2000, both have "dips" before first drop!) Son of Beast vs. The Legend - Never had the chance to ride SOB, so Legend wins by default. Not a fan of extreme laterals, though, so Legend is number three for me at HW. SIGNATURE WOODIES (This one is obvious...) The Beast vs. The Voyage - Blows The Beast out of the water, including at night. Being thrown around from side to side and up and down will always beat straight-line speed, especially when the former occurs at a higher speed. DROP/LAUNCH RIDE Drop Tower vs. Liberty Launch - Taller, which is what it's all about here. Plus I prefer dropping to being launched anyway. RAPIDS RIDE White Water Canyon vs. Raging Rapids - Draw. WWC is designed to get you drenched, and it is very good at that. RR is designed to get you just a little wet, and it is very good at that. Which one I would prefer depends on how wet I would want to get. So I can't really compare them. LOG FLUME Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown vs. Frightful Falls Log Flume - Gives you a pretty good splash even if you're riding solo, unlike RFYLCB. Also has the big splash right at the base of the hill, instead of after flattening out for a couple seconds, which for some reason I like better. SWING RIDE Zephyr vs. Hallowswings - Tie. They're the same model; not enough different about them to make distinctions. SPIDER/MONSTER/ETC RIDE Monster vs. PR Midnight Ride - Never rode the latter, and it's long gone now. SCRAMBLER BATTLE KI Scrambler vs. Scarecrow Scrambler - Because it was manually operated as recently as a couple of years ago IIRC. Plus it's one of the fastest Scramblers I've ridden. CAROUSEL BATTLE Grand Carousel vs. Star Spangled Carousel - Because the Queen of Kings Island sounds awesome (and because I don't think I've ridden the one at HW). TRAIN BATTLE KI & Miami Valley Railroad vs. The Freedom Train - Bigger train, longer track. Plus the Freedom Train is gone and replaced with the Holidog Express (but KI&MVRR still wins). SHOOT-EM-UP DARK RIDES Boo Blasters vs. Gobbler Getaway - Working guns/turkey callers/whatever. Need I say more? DODEMS Dodgems vs. Rough Riders - A little faster, allowing harder hits. KIDDIE COASTERS Great Pumpkin Coaster vs. The Howler - Because adults can ride it without a kid. STAFF (Overall Performance, includes friendliness and efficency) KI Staff vs. HW Staff - I could go on for days about this. PARK "LOOKS" (Which one looks better? As in scenery, theming, cleanliness, etc etc.) Kings Island vs. Holiday World - Same as above. VALUE (Get-in-price, food prices, etc etc...) Kings Island vs. Holiday World - Free stuff! (Yes, I know I'm paying for it with the cost of admission, but even daily admission is cheaper than KI.) OVERALL Tally up all the points and declare winner. Counting ties as one-half point to each park, Kings Island 5, Holiday World 11.
BoddaH1994
What about KI vs HW in: Hyper coasters Inverts Suspended coasters Observation towers Giant Frisbees Etc etc etc Holiday World is still minor league compared to Kings Island. There's just a lot more to the story than your comparison.
jcgoble3
^ See the OP: But wait? Doesn't KI have like, 14 coasters (counting SOB but not Surf Dog), versus 4 for HW? That's unfair! OK, well, this "battle" will be a little different...GO EQUALIZER!!! (Equalizer sucks up Diamondback, Vortex, Flight of Fear, Firehawk, and anything from KI I couldn't find a suitable HW opponent for) OK, now that that's over, here are the individual "battles". In other words, this is more about comparing individual aspects of each park where there is something to compare to, rather than comparing the totality of everything each park has to offer.
McSalsa
Ahh, my early days here on KIC (2009-2010)...hmm, have my views changed since then? Yes...somewhat. I actually do love both of these parks (TBH these are still the only 2 parks I have been to in recent years- I STILL really need to get to more but money hasn't flowed too well and these 2 have been the closest & most affordable larger parks in the region- well now there's Kentucky Kingdom too but that just opened back up so...). Usually, when me and my family/friends are planning these trips, and these 2 parks are the main options our choice hinges on: do we want to go to a park for roller coasters and thrill rides (in which case KI wins) or do we want to hit the waterpark (in which case Holiday World wins). And man, looking at how much has changed since I made this... Now "Dead" Rides Kings Island: The Crypt, Son of Beast, Thunder Alley Holiday World: Paul Revere's Midnight Ride, AmaZOOM, Bamboo Chute, Congo River, Freedom Train, Giraffica Newcomer Rides Kings Island: WindSeeker, Tidal Wave Bay, Banshee Holiday World: Safari Sam's Splashland, Rudolph's Round-Up, Mammoth, Hyena Falls, Kitty's Tea Party, Holidog Express, Mayflower, Thunderbird (WOW- even if many of these are kinda small that's a lot of new rides in just 5 seasons!) Not to mention the major changes in leadership at both parks Terpy brought up- Ouimet as CEO for Cedar Fair and thus Kings Island and the whole turnover at Holiday World since Will Koch's death. Crazy how much can change in just 5 years.
