This topic reminds me of a great GP line I heard last night, Friday the 13th, 2011. We were walking out of the exit of Adventure Express, and nearby is a Skyline advertisement, and the

young man goes, "huh, I wonder why they are advertising Skyline Chili in Kings Island?" I couldn't keep from laughing. I was going to proceed to tell the young man that there was

a Skyline Chili just down the way, but he walked away too quickly. Must have been his first visit to the park.

We arrived at the park about 1010 am today. In line for our first Diamondback ride of the day it started to mist. By the time we got to the station it was a steady rain and they suspended operations due to weather (assuming there was a threat of lightning because it really wasn't a hard rain, just steady). We got under cover and waited about ten minutes for the all clear; by that time one of the three trains had been removed.

We rode Diamondback twice in a steady drizzle. Raindrops HURT at 80 mph and it was cold.

We escaped to Beast which was down to one train. With a five-minute ride time, that makes for a long wait. One ride there, one more Diamondback, and we cried uncle. That's one of the hidden benefits of a season pass - a shortened day at the park doesn't hurt too badly. We can't wait until school's out for summer so we can quit attending on weekends. It's hard to adapt to hour waits when 15 minutes is the norm on weekdays.

The two train operation on Diamondback produced a noticeable delay. When we got in line the third time, the line was through all the speed rails except the last one - normally about a 45 minute wait. This one took about 1:05. Normally when train 1 leaves the station, train 2 is waiting to roll in while the third just finished their circuit. With two trains, the extra 30 seconds to roll into the station is really noticeable.

The reason The Beast was down to one train was because of the rain. Cedar Fair is ultra conservative with rain, and typically will only run the coasters with one train in the rain. The exception to the rule is Diamondback, which has a "rain mode" that allows it to operate with two trains by keeping an extra set of blocks between the trains. One would think that they could adopt The Beast to have a similar "rain mode" since it has TWO lifts and is such a long ride time. There are ample blocks to keep the required spacing of an extra set of block brakes between trains. One train operation on The Beast is just ridiculous.

I`m all for safety on rides, but I still think that rain rule is a little extreme. Especially considering that The Beast uses magnetic brakes to slow the trains down considerably. The old pneumatic brakes do not do the majority of the braking work. The magnetic brakes work the same regardless of how wet it is, so they are still going to slow the train down to the same speed. (Same thing goes for Backlot Stunt Coaster, which also has magnetic brakes).

When we used to see rain in forecast we would highly considered going to KI because we knew it would be a slower day for crowd sizes. Now and even yesterday for our most recent visit we almost did not come due to rain in the forecast, we did go anyway and had a great time with the family (spent way too much but it was a family day). I must admit when the rain did come we left the park for a early diner versus dealing with the rain effect on ride operations and since fewer choices of restaurant openings scared us a bit in getting a place to sit waiting on the all clear signal.

So my thought here is that as much as we hate the rain effect on operations Cedar Fair/ Kings Island must really hate the rain as they must see lots of potential revenue staying/driving away.

I wonder if the one train policy is a requirement from the insurance company due the accidnet on Beast years ago.

Although, I seem to remember some verbage of KI (CF) being self-insured.....
