New Jersey coaster submerged by superstorm Sandy may stay as tourist attraction

Seaside Heights Mayor Bill Akers tells WNBC-TV in New York that officials have not made a decision on whether to tear down the coaster. But the mayor says he's working with the Coast Guard to see if the coaster is stable enough to leave it alone because he believes it would make "a great tourist attraction."

They will have to remove that old coaster from the water. As it is now, it would be a hazard to both people and vessels. It will break up and block the area as it is rebuilt. I look for the US Coast Guard to order its removal as being a hazard to navigation and to public health.

But you have to see the meaning behind leaving the Arizona untouched vs. a pier roller coaster.

The USS Arizona has over a thousand souls still as their final resting place and is a lasting memorial to their ultimate sacrifice. The roller coaster has the potential of breaking up from the violent waves and pose a hazard to boats and ships as it is carried away. Small boats can collide it as the pieces of steel are hidden beneath the waves. It will be up to the US Coast Guard to make the final decision as to its fate.

SEASIDE HEIGHTS (WABC) -- Police have apprehended a man who apparently climbed the New Jersey roller coaster that was swept into the ocean during Superstorm Sandy and unfurled an American flag.

The 38-year-old Lavallette man, identified as Christopher Angulo, paddled out to the Seaside Heights Jet Star coaster in a canoe to plant the flag. He said something about restoring what was lost to the shore.
