New Jersey coaster submerged by superstorm Sandy may stay as tourist attraction

Featured Replies

Seaside Heights Mayor Bill Akers tells WNBC-TV in New York that officials have not made a decision on whether to tear down the coaster. But the mayor says he's working with the Coast Guard to see if the coaster is stable enough to leave it alone because he believes it would make "a great tourist attraction."

Because I would just love to pay $500 to fly there to see a mound of litter in the sea.

They just don't want to fish it out. They are just hoping it eventually rots and sinks.

They will have to remove that old coaster from the water. As it is now, it would be a hazard to both people and vessels. It will break up and block the area as it is rebuilt. I look for the US Coast Guard to order its removal as being a hazard to navigation and to public health.

I wasn't comparing the tragedies or anything like that. I was responding to the "they will have to remove it" comment. They don't have to do anything if they don't want to.

I apologize if it sounded insensitive. It was not meant to.

Honestly, I understand that.

But you have to see the meaning behind leaving the Arizona untouched vs. a pier roller coaster.

The two are incomparable.

I do see that. Again, I wasn't comparing their meaning. I was just saying it wouldn't have to be taken out as the post above mine suggested.

I see how my original post would come off wrong, and I'm sorry.

The USS Arizona has over a thousand souls still as their final resting place and is a lasting memorial to their ultimate sacrifice. The roller coaster has the potential of breaking up from the violent waves and pose a hazard to boats and ships as it is carried away. Small boats can collide it as the pieces of steel are hidden beneath the waves. It will be up to the US Coast Guard to make the final decision as to its fate.

Only a resident of NJ would suggest to leave junk in the water for people to come look at and spin it into a positive result.

Jersey Shore Amusements Race Time to Rebuild for Summer

“Everybody’s going to be pushing because everybody’s under the same gun,” said William Akers, mayor of Seaside Heights, where Casino Pier remains without electricity. “We all have that same deadline. Our tourist season is short to begin with, and we need to be open.”

Shore tourism is the backbone of New Jersey’s $38 billion leisure and hospitality industry, the third-biggest source of private-sector jobs in the Garden State and an essential part of its soul. The shore’s economy is a complex system of rides, boardwalks, beaches, arcades, bars, restaurants and lodgings. Take one piece away and every other piece is diminished.

I wonder if the NJ mayor still thinks it a good idea to leave the coaster?

SEASIDE HEIGHTS (WABC) -- Police have apprehended a man who apparently climbed the New Jersey roller coaster that was swept into the ocean during Superstorm Sandy and unfurled an American flag.

The 38-year-old Lavallette man, identified as Christopher Angulo, paddled out to the Seaside Heights Jet Star coaster in a canoe to plant the flag. He said something about restoring what was lost to the shore.
