Cicadas and Boomerang bay

If I were incharge of PKI, I would find a way to kill them off once they entered the park. They own a lot of surrounding land and could put deviced out there to kill them off. I would have several people dedicated to cleaning up the mess ALL DAY LONG. -adam12

It certainly is a concern for the park. If you think not, you're definately wrong because it ends up costing them money. Alot of people don't like bugs, so they won't go out during this period of time to visit the park. Now I dread having this summer with them as well I hate bugs and I have to have eight hour football practices outside in them, where hopefully the turf will scare them away. Maybe at PKI they won't have them as bad, but certainly here in Kentucky there are expected to be hundreds of thousands so it certainly is a concern whether you believe it or not.

From what I understand, the Island is not supposed to be that badly effected by the swarm this year. Cicadas floating in the water would only enhance the attempted theming....it'll be great! biggrin.gif

But really. Is this a good year to open up a new waterpark? Yes. There would have been a waterpark open this summer at the park whether or not Boomerang Bay would have opened and whether or not the cicadas would have broken earth.

Everythings fun and games until they fly off with the children.

I hate to say it because I like the waterpark but the waters going to be buzzing, and not from the new atractions. wait until the tempeture gets above 90 and the water get warm anybody for cicada soup. And warning don't buy any wood partern swim trunk because the little stinger they have likes wood and you could be mistaken for a red wood. Goodluck and for gods sake run!!!!!!!!!!

Look, CP gets bugs every year. Do they second guess building a new ride because guests might be annoyed with them? Not hardly. Yes, cicadas are a problem, but think about it this way. Cicadas will return again some day and will be a problem again. There's not much you can do about it. Get over it.

Cicada's (or Jarfiles or Locusts) aren't that bad. You shouldn't be all worried about them because they are not after you, but only after green vegitation. They don't sting.. I think u may be confused with wood hornets (as they're called down here where i live). Wood hornets love wood because they want to build a nest in it or near it & its easy access for nest building material. Those huge paper balls hanging from trees, which are their nests, are simply made out of chewed up wood because the hornets chew up the wood and their spit acts as a glue (same thing with wasps). Im not sure if cicada's are after the water that bad unless they lay their eggs in it. but why would they lay their eggs in CDBB's water if there's chlorine in it?... unsure.gif & the reason they're so noisy is because that is their mating call for some hot cicada luvin' laugh.gif Every year down here... there is always some type of report that cicada's are going to be so bad & they usually end up being wrong. I don't understand why a major theme park would base ride construction on a bunch of stupid annoying bugs when all you have to do is just ignore them. I think PKI is much more focused on making money rather than letting the bugs overrule them. Since cicada's are after green vegetation I believe it would hurt the landscaping just as bad as the rides.

If people are tough enough then they will just ignore them & enjoy the park. Don't let a bunch of pesky bugs ruin your fun! laugh.gif

& if people dont want to come to the park because of cicada's then they'll just have to deal with them wherever they live. They're going to be everywhere anyways! laugh.gif

Well it depends on what ride your on for it to be bad with the Cicadas. I was at the park 17 years ago and it was not bad in some areas. If you rode The Beast it was bad and also The Racers with the Trees (where the FX building is now).

Man, it sounds like God and Mother Nature don't want the Island to do much business from what you folks are talking about...like I said, this year is the PERFECT year for a waterpark with Austrailian theming!!! It'll be great!!!

There'll be cicadas floatin' down the lazy river, I may actually forget that I'm still in Ohio...I can't WAIT!!!

AHHH! Don't worry about the cicadas they only nest where theres lots of trees. Thats where they lay there eggs, And thats what the stinger is for, it borrows in the tree limb. then they hatch and borrow under ground and stay for 17 years ( notice all the hole under trees and the dead tree limbs where they borrowed) just do a little swerving on the highway and take out as many as you can, so you don't get that one at 80mph in the teeth going down the first hill on Son of Beast.

the enquirer had and article last time they hatch about a girl getting stung by one

and raise a big uproar like war of the worlds , but it mistakin her for a tree.

so wear camoflage at your own risk and keep moving or they'll take over your mind.

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok, after a little research I came up with the following:

Cicada's should predominantly be west of 71 and south of 275. This means that PKI should receive far fewer cicadas than us west-siders. The invasion should only last a month in a half or so, or until the end of June. Unfortunately, BB's opening is right on track for the beginning of the infestation.

Here is the article from the

Cincinnati Enquire that briefly mentions PKI and how few cicadas they should recieve.

Cicadas are different from jarflies and locusts. Check out http://www.dancentury.com/cicada/index.html for more info. Also, CDBB should be fine, considering, a lot of it will be concrete. Cicadas come out of the ground, and infest the trees around to mate, and then all die off. They will be here from May through the mid to end of June. As bad as this sounds, a really wet spring would help things out, and not make the invasion nearly as bad. There is all kinds of cool things to do with Cicadas. You can rip their wings off and send them down the side walk for cicada races (did that 17 years ago) they also ahve this neat trick, where if you rip their stomachs off, they will still survive for a while, and keep climbing trees and flying around. Fun things to do to cicadas when you are bored.

there are some people who are serioulsly afraid of these things and want to avoid them as much as possible. A person from my crew is going to wear rain gear from the time the first one is out until the last one is dead. i could see some people definitely being a little hesitant to coming to pki during these 6 weeks especially season pass holders, since they can come some other time.
