freaks76
Alrite, finally (after a year) Gonna get to do a little trip to Carowinds and hit KD on the way back, Looks like we're leavin' Fri Mar 31 and gonna come back that Sunday night. As of now that's all I have in the plans..... Suggestions? I know nothing of either city. Motels? Food? Parks themselves? No suggestion to little.......
ohioparksrock
Rock Hill, SC is about 15 minutes from Carowinds and has great prices on Hotels. The Courtyard there is very nice, the Country Inn and Suites not so much. Check and see if there's a minor league baseball game while you're near Charlotte. We hit one up two years ago and it was a blast. We have done Carowinds two years in a row and I was amazed at the small crowd sizes. We did Fridays and Saturdays both times with Max wait times of 10-15 minutes on everything but Nighthawk. Fury was a walk on or station wait at most! Oh, one other motel in Rock Hill that was perfectly clean but no frills is the Super 8. Cookout is right across the street with good but cheap food!
jbum123
We do the same trip every year only we are leaving this weekend. With it being Easter, Sunday at KD will be slow and Monday at Carowinds is pretty lite too. For KD, we stay at the Holiday Inn Express off 64 in Richmond and at the HIE one exit north if Carowinds. Both are nice hotels with free breakfast. Can't comment on cost since I always stay for free with points. Have fun!

The Interpreter
Do not miss Volcano: The Blast Coaster at Kings Dominion. It's one of my favorite coasters anywhere!
freaks76
I've been looking at what all they have, ride wise. That's, for sure, on top of the list. Probably more than once.
NoChickens
We need to get back there. As Terpy mentioned, Volcano is a must ride. I also say the same for I-305, though he would disagree. Luckily for you, IMO, Hurler won't be running ;-)
MDMC01
I went to both KD and Carowinds in 2001 and back to Carowinds in 2003. At KD, I'd recommend Anaconda, Volcano and Avalanche (Berzerker was the only other ride I rode there). At Carowinds, I remember Afterburn being really fun and I also liked Hurler back then. I'm hoping to make a trip back to Carowinds (most likely in late June) to ride Nighthawk, Fury, Drop Tower and more. I'd also like to see Cirque Imagine while I'm there; it opens June 18th. Have fun!
electricsun
Weird tip but gas is cheaper in South Carolina compared to North Carolina. You'll miss this but in case anyone else is looking for a Carowinds trip this spring, April and May is their Festival of Music. It may be a bit busier than expected. We went in the evening of Friday last May and it was still hopping with the middle and high school band students. https://music.carowinds.com When I go to Carowinds, I'm staying at my friend's house 30 minutes away and eating locally there so I'm no use. When I visited Kings Dominion, I camped at Camp Wilderness. They do have cabins. The campgrounds are shaded and had really nice restroom/shower facilities. They offer a free shuttle to the park. You can faintly hear the roar of the coasters and see the park from certain areas.
marth555
Volcano is a top 5 coaster imo
freaks76
Well now it looks like we're gonna go to KD before hoppin' on down to Carowinds. I'm gonna assume the crowds will be pretty on the Friday we get there, seein schools are still in session and such. Being my first trip to either, I'm startin to get excited, Thanks for the advice you guys have givin so far. Anything else you all wanna add, don't hold back on me.
freaks76
So I'm kinda doin my mapping out, and it looks like I-64 runs right smack into Kings Dominion. Which is gonna be the route I'm taking. So my question is, The toll booths, anyone have any idea what they charge? Are they all the same price? I'm sure they probably want exact change, I have no idea, never been on a toll road in my life......

The crowds won't be bad IF you don't end up with a million buses in the parking lot. That's always a possibility.

I'm sure they probably want exact change, I have no idea, never been on a toll road in my life...... The toll at each of the three WV turnpike toll booths is $2. You'll only travel through two of them following I-64, so the toll will be $4/way.
freaks76
I'm hoping, still being early, that most schools will wait till a little later to take a field trip. but yea, I've thought of that, here's hopin'....... Four bucks ain't bad, glad to know how many there are, though. Thanks guys!
rhyano
Tip for Carowinds, all the crews on rides are not very good, except the Fury crew, so be prepared at yelling at them in your head

I will probably get upset if the r-word plays a role in my trip. Thanks for the advice guys, packed and ready to go.
freaks76
Day two startin. 13 hours of drivin and 6 states in less than 24 hours. KD was pretty good Volcano and I-305 were great coasters. Park was a little smaller than I thought it would be. Been raining pretty hard this morning. Right across the street from Carowinds.
freaks76
Great trip, only real regret was I didn't get to do it while Shockwave was still standing. Love riding coasters I have never rode before, got to knock alot off the list this weekend. Rode eveything but Nighthawk. It went down a few times, and when it went back up it was a two hour wait. Carowinds was very busy Saturday. Would have like to rode Hurler. Volcano was the best I rode all weekend. Really liked The Intimidator's. Don't think I had a bad ride on a coaster all weekend. I will never ride The Crypt or anything like it again. Still haven't found any of my friends or family that can hang with me ridin' coasters. Thank's to you guys for takin time out of your days for the advice, it really was a great trip. Here's to a great summer and season coming up!
