Has Tower Topics been threatened by the park?

I’ve noticed something concerning regarding Tower Topics, in today’s episode you could tell something bad, like really bad happened.

Let’s break down the facts:

  • Don and Ryan were the face of the resistance. Telling us how it is, and not afraid to speak their minds.
  • The Tower Topics X was deleted, no more tweets, all gone, poof.
  • Today’s episode, was very apologetic, let’s focus on the good, what? What happened to the Don and Ryan from last week? This show was previously like being on a life boat (the podcast) watching the titanic sink (Kings Island). What is going on?

Sounds like to me they were confronted by upper management about their behavior, and if they keep this up they my be banned from the park. They deleted the X burning the paper trail, losing thousands of historical tweets. Sounds like damage control to me…

Has Tower Topics entered it’s shill era? Sounds like it to me.

I haven't listened yet, so I don't know their official explanation for deleting the X account. Part of me wonders if they just didn't get good engagement on it and the fact that X is so toxic as is, and it's kind of a cesspool no one wants to support. The Facebook group is still there, but I don't know if that posts less confrontational stuff than the X account (I'm not on X).

Can they be kicked out of the park for sharing bad views? Honestly, seems weird. If so, couldn't KI theoretically ban any of us for saying something, if they figured out who we are? They're not park employees (any longer) and they're paying guests. They might get frozen out of exclusive news, etc., but I don't think upper management can really confront someone for saying they had a bad experience.

I think it's more likely that the podcast was started as a way to talk about Kings Island -- a park that, whatever the good or bad, they have a lot of love for. That means being honest when it falls short of expectations, but I wouldn't tune in to see them talk bad about it every week -- I want them to celebrate what's good in the park as well. If they enjoyed the 4th of July fireworks (which appears to be the subject of the latest podcast episode), then I'd expect they'd rave about that and there might not be a reason to talk about the other experiences.

Yeah, I don't think it was based on a response from the park. I agree with Don that while it's important to bring up the issues, it can become tiring just talking about the negatives. While important to hold the park accountable, it's also important to recognize everyone at the park level is trying to deliver the best park experiences they can with the resources given. Especially teenagers being paid $14/hr. I think being a theme park enthusiast, it can suck the fun out of the hobby focusing on trying to find the negatives. Especially doing it with a podcast, and as Don said, he's grown up with KI his entire life and I'm sure it's hard seeing and continuing to talk about issues people bring up. Not that they won't ever highlight issues, but that I think they want a break from it being the primary focus of most episodes.

Resistence????  They ARE speaking their minds.  Guess you only want to hear what they have to say when you agree with it.   As far as twitter goes, I've never had a twitter account nor will I.  I could care less what happens on twitter.

The only thing worse than being a shill for the the park is being the anti-shill for the park.  Why must everything be one extreme or the other?  I've listened to every episode and was getting tired of the constant negativity.  Go up around where Geauga Lake was and ask them if they miss having a park, no matter how poorly run.  Consistantly amazes me the "entitlement" of some people.  Not only do they expect and amusement park nearby, but it must have the biggest coasters, best drinks, coldest ice, manageable crowds, cheap merchandise and friendly employees to cater to THEIR needs reguardless of anyone else on the planet.

Most of the time when I have gone (I've been over 20 times) things have been fine.  I have noticed an uptick in not only more trash cans (they don't even have branding on them) but haven't noticed any overflowing since it was brought up on the podcast.  As for the ice I can't tell you how many times I've went and seen a mountain of ice under the dispenser where people have gotten "too much" and then dumped some out wasting ice.  Sometimes you can't even get a cup under there.  That along with people who come through the exits to refill really messes up the count of how many cups have been sold so they can't even go by how many drinks have been sold to get a guess when to refill the machines.  Every year they have to learn from scratch.  In my opinion, with 4 drink stations you shouldn't have to have 1 full time employee manning the ice at one location because of the lack of common sense and following the rules of others who waste ice and circumvent lines.

Bottom line:

There are about 8.2 billion people on the planet (it was 3.7 billion in 1970!)

About 1.5-2.5 billion people live within a two hour drive an amusement park.

In my opinion, having a park to shill or non-shill about is a privledge, not a right.  One that I'm very greatful for and consider myself to be part of the 20-30% of the population to be within a 2 hour drive of an amusement park.  It's a shame that some people can't be happy with what they have before missing what they no longer have.

As far as the podcast goes, I'll keep listening no matter what.  I find it entertaining and whereas I may not always agree with the views I'm open minded enough to allow them their opinion and the way in which to express it rather than labeling them.  The podscape is a much better with their show than it was without it.  Keep up the work gentlemen, some of us out here appreciate it and won't look a gift horse in the mouth.

Just my 2 cents.

Nobody from the park has ever said anything to us about the Tower Topics podcast, except they enjoy it and learned things they didn’t know.

As for retiring the Tower Topics X, it simply wasn’t proving enough value for the podcast. We have chosen to put all of the channel’s social media efforts into the Tower Topics Facebook Group. That has been providing us with far more value. We did have good engagement with the content we published on X, better than many of the posts the park makes on X. It just wasn’t proving enough value for us. A lot of what we’d post on X can still be found on my personal X.

Ryan and I are not going to be shills for the park. We’re going to keep doing the podcast the same way. Genuine and authentic with honest and frank discussion about Kings Island.
