DropZone99
Is acrophobia at SFOG closed also??? this doesn't say anything about it...
CoastersRZ
It does have cables, but it was manufactured by S&S Power, a different company from the ride in question. Additionally, the S&S tower rides do have cables both above and below the cars. While on both the second and third generation Intamin rides, the cables haul up the catch car and are located (under normal circumstances) above the riders. rollergirl
I don't know if we need to bother calling the parks (on what I am sure are busy PR days) with our speculative questions. I thought that was the purpose of discussion forums. More information is coming out by the hour. CNN Headline News just reported on the accident and interviewed a ride safety expert. An article was just posted 20 minutes ago on WCPO, channel 9 Cincinnati with the following info: The company that made Tower of Power also manufactured the "Drop Zone," a similar ride at Kings Island. "A Kings Island spokesman says the Swiss manufacturer asked Kings Island to shut down Drop Zone during the investigation into the Kentucky incident. Other drop-rides around the country are also on hold today. King's Island's Drop Zone was shut down like this once before back in 1999. That's when a boy died on the ride at an amusement ride in California. State inspectors say once they learn more about the accident in Kentucky, they'll determine if any rides in Ohio need to be inspected again. " We also know from current articles that 9 rides total are shut down including 5 CF rides: "The five Cedar Fair rides that will be shut down are at Kings Island near Cincinnati; Canada's Wonderland, in Toronto; Kings Dominion in Doswell, Va.; Carowinds, in Charlotte, N.C.; and Great America in Santa Clara, Calif." I want to be able to post questions and speculate with other KI fans, and not have to call the parks and go through who knows what kind of red tape to ask questions - isn't that is why a KI discussion forum exists? cstrwomann
Is Kennywood's Drop Tower an Intamin? I'm going there next weekend to reride the rides and see the park I haven't been there in 5 years and I want to see their new attractions. Is it safe to ride that one or is closed also? The Interpreter
Kennywood's Drop Tower is an INTAMIN. Kennywood, like all parks, will not run the ride again until it is assured it is safe to do so.
rollergirl
Interestingly enough, it is an Intamin, but from searching today's news, it was not shut down (at least from the info I can find). Here are the stats on Pitt Fall (Kennywood's Drop Tower): PITT FALL CONSTRUCTION INFORMATION Manufacturer…………………..…......… Intamin Original Year Erected…………......…. 1997 Year Erected at Kennywood……......1997 Classification………………………........ Free Fall DIMENSIONAL STATISTICS Ride Height……………………….......….251 feet Maximum Drop………………….......…..229 feet Free Fall………………………….......…..150 feet Maximum Speed……………………......65mph (down) TRAIN INFORMATION Number of cars…………………....……4 Number of seats per car……….…...4 OPERATION INFORMATION Operating Status……………………..Operating
The Interpreter
It is my understanding that INTAMIN contacted the owners of all operating Giant Drops and asked that they be closed. I'd be stunned if Pitt Fall did not close when INTAMIN requested that it be closed pending inspection.
rollergirl
Kennywood's Drop Tower is an INTAMIN. Kennywood, like all parks, will not run the ride again until it is assured it is safe to do so. I am sure that you are right and it is shut down like all the intamin rides, I am just surprised that when I searched today's news, no local PA source reported on Kennywood shutting down that ride the way the other parks did. PKIDelirium
Someone I know was at Kennywood today, and Pitt Fall was operating normally.
The Interpreter
Well then, count me as stunned! Even the parachute drop at Six Flags Great Adventure was closed today.
WooferBearATL
Well, i'd say that it would be bad judgement on any parks part to run a free fall ride until answers come in. Opens them up to all kinds of added liability if something were to happen until this is resolved. So to speak, a park would not have feet to stand on. The Interpreter
Okay, I just made some phone calls. According to KDKA in Pittsburgh, Kennywood has reinspected Pitt Fall and it has been cleared for operation. It HAD been previously closed this morning. Guest kwindshawne
Dear friends I am looking foward to riding Drop Zone next month, but after what happened, I'm not so sure if I'm going to ride it , until they make sure it is safe again. My prayers go to the family of the girl who lost her feet get well soon. Take care God Bless Marcia I feel physically sick over it...however, even though I do not particularly like the ride, I would do it again in order to prevent fear from overtaking me...but that is just me. I know this is kinda gruesome, but since I work in medical I have wondered all day...I wonder if her feet were able to be reattached? I am hoping that is the case. I think this was just a freak accident, one that could not have been foreseen, and not likely to happen again. I noticed tower of power is similar to the one I rode at Knotts-separate cars, instead of the donut type we have. Wonder if that was a condition to the accident? buchers
That's life. You take risks you never know whats gonna happen but when its your time to go you'll know! PKIVortex
The Drop Zones at Canada's Wonderland, Carowinds, and Great America, are exactly the same model as Superman Tower of Power at SFKK. The only differences in them are the heights.
