  1. Well, a discount that would offer across the board discounts on food prices for gold pass holders would actually benefit the per capita spending, Touchdown. Why? Well, it targets pass holders who are normally not going to spend lots of money on in park food because of the price. But if they got a substantial enough discount, they would be more likely to spend money on their many visits to the park on food items. Doing so ultimately increases the per cap spending. All season passes at Coney have typically included a 10% discount on all food and merchandise. And for those that purchase a Platinum pass (which is $40 more than a regular Coney season pass) the discount jumps to 20%!
  2. Yes, but how much more do Gold Pass holders at Dollywood have to pay? It is a lot more than just the $5 upcharge that you get with a KI gold pass. Keep in mind that a regular pass at Dollywood does not include parking, but a Gold Pass does.
  3. Well, given that every Sunday in June, Jule and August Gold Pass holders can ride EXtreme Skyflyer for only $5 a person, that is not a bad deal at all! Not to mention the early ride times on Diamondback and The Beast all season long (starting April 24th). That alone is a very nice perk! And this year gold pass holders get 15% off on ride photos, excluding Diamondback, which again is another nice perk!
  4. Yes! (I`m not Terpy though!) Several parks have held similar endurance contests over the years. I believe one radio station out in California did one on the Giant Dipper at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk about ten years back. I thought they also did something more recently than 1998, but I could be wrong.
  5. Well, it has been closed now for at least a month! Which is a shame, because it is a great and thrilling ride (its even a little bit intense, at least more than what I expected).
  6. Was the Skyscraper still closed? I know it was closed when we went there after the KIC construction tour back on February 21st. That ride can pack a nice little punch!
  7. No need to shout the topic title! And as others have said, why would a park purchase a ride and locate it in such a way as to prevent guests from accessing an existing popular attraction? Flight Deck, from what I know, is NOT getting repainted this season. And with that, this topic has served its useful purpose.
  8. I actually believe that the Cincinnati Reds (at least used to anyway) allow fans to bring in UNOPENED plastic bottles of pop and water into the ball park. I`m fairly certain this was in effect last year. There is a smaller amount of time when fans are actually at baseball games on any given day (two to three hours) versus the potential ten to twelve hours that guests can be at an amusement park. However, guests at MOST amusement parks during the regular season can leave the park and go out to their cars and re-enter the park (fans at baseball games cannot do so). In short, if amusement parks were to allow guests to bring in unopened pop containers, they would surely loose revenue from selling soft drinks. Now, the question becomes an economics issue. What is the right price to maximize profit margins? Raise prices too high and you will higher per unit margins, but you will sell less units. If prices are lower, than you will sell more units, but at a lower profit margin. Their is one price in which there is a profit maximization, in which the highest potential profit is being achieved by matching the supply with the demand, depending on the price.
  9. To my knowledge, P&G has never had a picnic in the picnic grove for their days in September. I have gone to nearly every P&G day since the early 90`s as my Dad works for P&G. It is hard to miss that it is P&G day with all the inflatables advertising P&G products, and all the tents on International Street (particularly by the Eiffel Tower) giving away samples of P&G products. I actually missed P&G day at Kings Island this past year, as I was out of town. Instead, I was at Walt Disney World. So not only did I miss P&G day this year, I was in Florida and missed the hurricane in Cincinnati!
  10. Dinosaur is a great highly themed adventure ride. (And my sister and I happened to win Dream Fastpasses on Dinosaur back in September after the preshow, which was really cool!). However, I would prefer to ride The Beast over Dinosaur, simply because of its thrills. angrybeaver, have you ever been to a Disney park before? They are experiences quite unlike what can be found at Kings Island, Cedar Point, and even Dollywood, although Dollywood does come close to creating the same type of energy as a Disney park. I have been to Disney World two times, once in 2004 and again this past September. I absolutely love the place, and it will only be a matter of time before I make a return trip back there. I would like to visit the original park in CA at some point, in addition to its newer neighbor. But alas, I don`t see that happening any time soon.
  11. I don`t know whether to tell you, or let you weather the storm of your mistakes. It is a very good thing that one can take a break from typing to ponder the correct homophone to use in a situation. You`re very lucky to have such an understanding community to realize that sometimes ridiculous mistakes like using the incorrect homophone happen from time to time, even to the best of us!
  12. Yep! And the Subways at KI do not offer meatball subs, unfortunately.
  13. Actually, that is NOT Jeff Siebert`s voice on the second lift hill of The Beast! It actually is a ride op that worked The Beast in the mid 90`s I believe.
  14. Because we all know that the coaster arms race that was prevalent at the turn of the century is running rampant still...

    Trim Brakes

Try using the search feature. This subject has been discussed endlessly in multiple threads this offseason.
  16. I`d say the more likely reason is that they still have some landscaping issues to work on around the splash down area that necessitate the removal of the water.
  17. Yes, this is no joking matter. Fires have devasted parks before. Just look at Idora Park in Youngstown, Ohio, which ceased operation after a fire wiped through the park in 1984. Disasters other than fires are not good for parks either. As Interpreter mentioned the maze fire at Great Adventure hurt business for many years. Similarly, attendance at Kings Island fell off considerably in 1992, after the tragic events of Black Sunday. Flight Commander was modified following that incident. It remained open for a few more seasons before being removed from the park. The site sat vacant for many years, before becoming home to an upcharge attraction that generally does not add much in terms of value to most paying park guests. Not to mention that it really does not have a material effect on the park`s capacity. As Interpreter mentioned, wishing an attraction were to be devastated by a fire is no laughing matter. Primarily for safety concerns, but also for the well being and public image of the park that so many of us love to visit and like to express our feelings for on this site. While one person may not like Flight Deck other people may love it. Case in point is Son of Beast. Some people absolutely despise it with a passion, while others claim it is the best coaster in the park. Wishing a disaster on an attraction is simply terrible thinking on the part of a person that does not have the true interests of the park at hand. We on this site should wish to see the park prosper and continue to expand, not wish disasters to occur to some of its older rides, thus hurting the parks public image and ability to generate revenues.
  18. Well, vertical construction has not started, but putting in the footings is definitely a form of construction. Water slides are big ticket items anymore. This set of slides that Coney is installing is a BIG investment for Coney. I`m sure it will become a big hit with park guests for years to come, just like the Zoom Flume thrilled people for 31 years.
  19. Thrill Biscuit, check out the post that I just posted at the same time as your post. I narrow down the time frame for the video, based on attractions seen in the actual video itself.
  20. What an incredible video!!!! I thoroughly enjoyed it very much, since I have worked in the rides department now for seven years (soon likely eight). Yes, the video has to have been done in at least 1968. That is the year that the log flume ride was added to Coney. Additionally, I`d say that it might even be from 1969, as that was the year the Monster ride (made by Eyerly Aircraft Corp.) opened at Coney. And that architect the narrator kept mentioning? His name is Darryl Daniels, and he is a graduate from the University of Cincinnati`s Architecture program (the same one that I am currently enrolled in). That German building that the video shows is no longer a food stand. Instead, it is the comissary for all the group picnic food. It is located immediately behind the Administration building. Additionally, the games building still remains at Coney and contains games of skill, of course, as well as the Rides office.
  21. Except many years back when they had a Gold Pass Bring a Friend Free day on Mother`s day, and they also had local celebrity Roger Bingham from Survivor at the park. Talk about a mad house! The places was packed!
  22. Actually, it is typically "Down bar recheck, double check."
  23. If you read my earlier post in this thread, I covered much of what you just posted in your thread. That being said, welcome to KICentral, and do not be afraid to post. Just ensure that before you post you read up on some of the posts in a thread before responding. Sometimes things have already been mentioned before you share them!
  24. That is um, interesting. Seems to be similar to EPCOT, but not as well executed or thought out. An attraction called "Why" and another one called "Why Not?" If this thing is ever built, I would be surprised. Not to mention the architecture for the actual "climate controlled" building seems a bit lackluster. Not to mention the renderings are on the weak side, and do not even show any of the structural elements. And perhaps the biggest reason I doubt this is developed is because of the economy. Even Ferrari World in Abu Dhubai has delayed its opening by a year. That project, which was designed by Cincinnati based Jack Rouse Associates has some very interesting attractions going into it.
  25. See my post above. Originally, when Taft Broadcasting purchased the land that Kings Island sits on, they bought 1,600 acres of land on both sides of Interstate 71. The Kings Island Inn and Conference Center was built by Taft and owned by them for several years. It is now owned by the Belvedere Corporation, based out of the Carew Tower downtown. In addition, Taft developed the Golf Center at Kings Island. I believe that the city of Mason recently purchased the property after it was placed for sale and they did not want to see more subdivisions built on the land. I`m not sure when Taft divested the property. Additionally, the Lindner Family Tennis Center, home to the Western and Southern Financial Master`s and Women`s Open was part of the land that Taft had purchased for Kings Island. Again, I do not know when Taft sold this land. Lastly, there is the Kings Island campground. This was a functional campground until the conclusion of the 2004 season. After the 2004 season, construction started on the $100 million Great Wolf Lodge at Kings Island. CBS, the owner of Kings Island at the time that land was "sold off" acquired a minority interest in the GWL in exchange for the land. I believe their stake was about 16%. When Cedar Fair bought Paramount Parks from CBS, they were offered CBS`s share of the GWL. However, they were not interested in it. CBS later sold their share of the GWL to Great Wolf. Does that help answer some of your questions? I`m not sure on the exact dates that Taft sold off these adjacent amenities and other details and timelines on when they were actually developed. Hopefully you found some of that information insightful.
