If KI were to put in a Luminosity show, I would hate to have a 6th stage of entertainment. I have thought this over and over, should they use the International Showcase which fits well with the layout of the current model at CP. A few upgrades to an existing facility, and boom a new show. A few ideas for that concept - Take out ALL the bleachers.. I have never seen it full in years. Make the bowl tiered with picnic tables for seating. They could get rid of the sea of tables just outside of the showcase at Chic-fil-a, Ice Cream, and Planet Snoopy Grill. People will tend to stay and eat while a show is going on = Revenue. Then the stage can be used for day shows and the nighttime extravaganza. If they could make the sun shade retract then people could see the fireworks from the same place. Add an awesome LED package to the outside and stage area - then expand that lighting to The Racer, Delirium, Invertigo, Coney Mall. 2nd option - Put Luminosity in the current fountain bandstand. Keeping in mind visual appeal with the tower behind it from front gate. Upgrade the stage to a full production stage with more room for dancers/singers. Upgrade the fountain to a WET designs style fountain that integrates with the show, but also performs throughout the day. International Street can be upgraded with new LED style lighting including the trees. Make it a true kiss goodnight. I'm not saying going full World of Color here, but look what that 1 show did for California Adventure. Show control could all be built over Tower Drinks, moving it out of the grass by the tower. Timberwolf I think has seen its last years, 30 years old - open back bleachers for seating, NO real rigging for modern shows to speak of. That is a lot of real estate that can be used for rides and things. The facility is becoming more of a liability than a revenue maker.

I heard they were moving the space spiral from Cedar Point to Kings Island tomorrow.

Hi Lance ! : waves: Where else do you think he will get all of his information - If it wasn't for these fan sites, we would all be in the dark about lots of things. Very few of us are "in the know" and if you are, you better keep your fingers tied. And if you look at the history of ScreamScape and Jim Hill Media they are pretty good about filtering BS from real possibilitys. Now my take on Thunder Alley... was never a GREAT gocart track.. Been to tons better. It has a good position in the park, and while KI has hundreds of acres, topography rules in real estate. Also to note - Fun Perks were giving away free rides like soft drink wristbands this year. Never once did I get a Free Skyflyer or Slingshot, so maybe they figured make a little revenue on it before it closes. Since I had to pay for one of my kids to ride thats better than normal when they never get a dollar from me. Its all in the Master Plans.

Abandoned Disney Resort
mullimann replied to Gordon Bombay's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
River Country's demise was multifold - Guest had to travel through Fort Wilderness Campground - thus having to park at the campground day visitor gate and bus into the water park - not very easy for familys. It closed in 2001 - 6 years after Blizzard Beach opened in 1995, and 2 years after Typhoon Lagoon opened in 1989. These 2 modern waterparks had multiple slides - easy access and could handle the huge crowds that often caused River Country to reach capacity in its heyday. The water quality was also an issue - the park used the lake water for many of the water attractions - the need to filter that water to only let it flow back into the lake was costly, because they were aware of issues with the water quality. The park was never demolished because they did have ideas to use it as a seasonal relief to the 2 big waterparks - or develop as a waterpark for the campground. Once a cost analysis was done it was determined that to build it correctly would be too costly for a resort pool. The demolition cost is also an issue - any disturbance of the soil would require a lot of environmental controls. The same envrionmental issues also exist for Discovery Island in the lake. Will River Country be demolished - Yes.. When - Who knows outside of Disney's inner circle. - Sonny has stood SBNO for 1/3 of its 12 year life, and as of 9/1/12 is still standing abandoned. -

The Disney Island was "Treasure Island" - Which never was owned by Disney. It was developed by Treasure Cay Limited - a subsidiary of Premier Cruise Lines. Premier was the "Big Red Boat" that had licensed to be the Official Disney Cruise Line. If you wasnt to find any info on it Google Keywords : Great Guana Cay, Bakers Bay, Disney, Premier Cruise, Treasure Island There are some good as built pics on an Architects page - http://www.danduckham.com/treasure_island_project.htm Here is a good abandoned pic - http://coconuttelegraph.net/forums/showthread.php?1291-Abandoned-Disney-site-location -
The Beach Waterpark Redesign Thread
mullimann replied to Coney Islander's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
I just think that Adventure Holdings is getting in over their head. They own FEC's not Waterparks. The one waterpark they have has like 2 slides and a wave pool. Now if they plan to use some of that acreage off water park dr they could build a FEC that would supplement the operating cost. The Mini Golf between Bob's and Skyline failed there so best of luck. Cedar Fair stepped up and built Soak City and they don't intend to let The Beach get those $$'s back. I just hope they don't use The Beach opening to make SC a separate gate to get water park only guest. -
I hope they can use the ride chamber to build a Universal Horror nights quality haunt. The sound stage haunts are awesome compared to walking into a giant tent or barn that may have a facade on. They could have a 2nd huge haunt if they used just 1 more level it could get 3-5 more scenes in the building. The current one spans the 2 it wouldn't be that hard to build a platform to level out between the rows.
-
The rope on Drop Tower was definitely a rope. I thought it was a cable at first, but then I got a closer look once in line for congo "Amazon" Falls. The ride was operational when I left at 8. Delirium was much like all season down. Riggers looked to have gotten things off the work platform. Hopefully the replacement parts are on site, and we don't have to wait for them from Bremen.
-
When I arrived at 2 the crane was up, but not lifting anything. 3 riggers were just hanging out on the work platform. The crane was down and workers were driving away just after 3.

You forgot Fantasy Farm, Surf City, and The Beach

How come that other wooden roller coaster near the front of the park never runs? And why aren't there any cars on its track?

After working in restaurants for many years I have learned that No ice is the best! 1st both Coke and Pepsi require the fountain pour to a temperature below 40. 2nd once you have cleaned a few hundred commercial ice machines you will never use ice! They are NASTY inside.

From the description and google pin on the map, it is showing the WindSeeker as going between The Vortex and Action FX Theater Exits. It would make since to put it on the Flight Commander's footprint. I don't know why they would want to do all the extra clearing and grading needed to put this ride there.

I would love to see KI return to a intern/college program for seasonal employees. They could build a dorm style building on the former camp grounds. Or possibly make a dorm agreement with UC, Miami, or Xavier to house employees. While it would be further from the property, it would allow the employees to experience life in one of those cities. I have known hundreds of students that have gone to the CF and the Disney college programs that have found it to be a life experience. While the employees work in the park they become more involved with the park than those who are using the park as a part time job. I also think that CF should consider making a breakers style hotel on property. I remember as a child staying at the KI inn and riding the bus to the park. It seems like KI is no longer a destination park but a day trip event.

good call Delirium. I was gonna say that because the trees arent the same either. I haven't seen the foutain at KD in years

Ralph Stricker dies

A great man has passed. I will say that what he created was something that many desire. To build his own place. Hopefully someone or a group will take control of the facility and operate it in his wishes. R.I.P Ralph Stricker 2007 -
So whats gonna happen to the discarded loop?
mullimann replied to StreetStrip03's topic in Kings Island
If there not careful someone will come on there property and steal it, now days scrap metal is going for a good price. Ask anyone in a new subdivison it seems like wire, pipes and air conditioning units just disappear. When X lands in the parking lot they better put snipers out there to keep it from disappearing. Maybe thats where the king cobra track went to... I could just see that on the news some morning.. Kings Island officals report a 4 ton piece of coaster track missing. Warren County officials are looking for someone who removed the track from the parking lot in the early hours. Sorry.. been cooped up with the family the last 2 days. I snuck on here to connect with the outside world. -
I was just in nashville over the thanksgiving holiday and there are a lot of things to do there, but since opryland closed its not really a market for teens and younger adults. The hotel is nice and so is the mall, but what is there to do when you have been there before. I think that what ever they build it will be good. I drove by that lot when I got lost looking for my hotel, and thought why is this all empty? I was surprised that it wasn't an outlet mall or something. From what I hear there is some resistance from the residents who live right next to the property, and a church that bought a large parcel of that area to try to keep gaylord from building anouther hotel or something, but the management has now gotten to realize that the amusement park did have good numbers. In other news... I am wondering if the seminole tribe deal to buy the hard rock brand will affect the hard rock park currently being developed in myrtle beach?

Preview of Fearfest 2006..6..6..

Maybe someone can help me, It looks as though some of the mazes are in tents or open air? I have never been to FF since i can't get the wife to go with me. I want to go this year since I have some friends from school and work that want to go. I know that indoor mazes work best to keep the equipment working correct and offer better facilities to work with. I saw a photo of one that looked to be in a maintance shed, but the others looked like they were outside. Wouldn't it be easier to put these in some buildings to allow the best controls for the haunts. At HHN we have the ability to use the many soundstages that are on property and have also used ride facilitys to build haunts. Kings Island dosen't have many buildings that are like that, but could use buildings such as Games buildings, FestHaus, Wings Diner, or the Theater in NU. If they wanted using Picnic shelters could be used, but I know they are almost all used for winter storage. I think if they used one of the game rooms in Coney mall or maul they could get a nice size haunt. The games could be stored in a retail location for the off season or even place them in there for the short time for use. Do they open happy days? at HHN Mel's Drive in becomes Die in and the wait staff is like zombies. I hope that in future years CF can use some of there buying power to get major designers to build a good set of haunts that could be on a rotation between all the parks to keep the cost down and to give everyone a new adventure each year. -

Can someone tell me where the attractions are located in the park, if they are near a ride or what area they are in. I am actually getting ready to goto HHN16 and I can't wait. They are the masters of haunted houses and scarezones. I haven't been since 2000. I hoped that KI would have a map, but I can't find one. Also what attractions are opened? Thanks -
You also have to consider that many food locations have minors from 15-18 working in locations and they must be off prior to 10pm. And it takes a while to close a food location since it must be in sanitary condition before you leave. It really doesn't make since to keep all food locations open until park close. Even Disney and Universal close many food locations early. It is typically hot food service that closes early since fryers and grills are time consuming. While Ice cream, funnel cakes and other operations are easier to clean. And guest typically aren't looking for pizza, burgers and big meals before leaving the park. They are usually looking for something to wind down with and enjoy while waiting for the fireworks or park closing. I can say from the operations department side that I would rather have stores and food operations close in waves than to have 30 venues and carts calling for supervisors and fighting to get cashed out and closed. As mentioned in anouther thread I would like to see a full service resturant like TGI fridays near the front gate. With the lack of entertainment in the park a full service resturant could actually make a good investment to the park for people who want to get out of the heat and enjoy something good to eat.

It is nice to see how much Taft really wanted to impress when the park first opened. The details were to meet and lead in the theme park industry. The layout of International Street to have the shops and most were working shops that showed how things were made. I did like to see how the greenbelt around the fountain went from in front of the buildings with separate sidewalks to the modern greenbelt around the fountain. I wonder when the pavers that got rid of the sidewalks in front of the shops. I hope that CF will bring more entertainment back to the parks. When you look back there used to be hours of entertainment every day at the parks. Now it seems to push about 5 hours total if you went to every show. That was nice for the parents and grandparents to get out of the heat. Maybe we can have a restaurant in the international restaurant again. Maybe a TGIF or similar restaurant since CF has them in there park. I would just like to see the focus back on a theme park and not try to compete with them and build these huge roller coasters that are beginning to cause the paving of the parks. If you look at the photos of The Bat the lawn was beautiful and mowed. Now The Vortex has weeds and tall grass in many areas. Bring back the landscaping and branding. Companies want to be in the parks. They would pay to advertise in the guides and have there logos seen by millions every year. Not only to the companies offer there products to the public and pay rent/fees to the parks they help pay the bottom line. I am sure that Taft loved to have a company like Sherwin Williams pay and donate the paint to cover the Eifel tower. And why not. Sherwin Williams used it in there own marketing. How long did Chevy pay to have there displays in the park. I can remember for the longest time seeing the corvette on my way to Oktoberfest every time I went to the parks. PKI did promote with JEEP with the tomb raider branding but not much has been seen since. Some may say it causes too much commercialization of the parks. But the parks are a captive audience. In the beginning many of the sponsors were locally based products. Now that Gillette is owned by P&G they have branding on top gun. They could go further with branding Vortex the fusion since it is purple and orange. I really had a problem that paramount who is a large multimedia company killed entertainment at the parks. They couldn't even keep up with there own themeing of rides since Top Gun lost all of its queue themeing with the construction of SOB and The 3D theater lost everything once they got rid of the days of thunder show. Lets hope that CF brings some energy back to the parks. They now have much more barganing power with any company and can bid out multi year projects/contracts and have more national companys vie for business. sorry to rant, but seeing the old park makes me think of things that once were. and after working in the industry i know that the only way to keep business is to stay on top and not let your guard down. I know six flags sure has let lots slip and it shows more and more every time I go to a park.

we took a trip last year with my youngest in a stroller. we rented one in the park, I am not sure if you can bring your own in we didn't attempt it. On a weekday the crowds will not be too bad. I would plan on spending 2 entire days, if your not wanting to spend much time in the waterpark then you could get by with just a day and half, but you loose time quick in the waterpark I think. For a hotel I would look at possibly staying off the kings mills exit or closer to sharonville to save money. I always prefer staying a few miles from the park anyway to save money on hotels and food. and with traveling with kids I like to be near someplace that I can goto a store and get food instead of eating out 3 times a day.
