CoastersRZ
Well, it used to be schools started later than they currently do. And if they are forced to reopen after Labor Day, might some districts not push the end of the school year farther into June? Granted, the fact that some schools start the first week or two of August is a little extreme. That being said, some districts are even going to year round school, with several weeks off for summer recess as opposed to several months. This type of school calendar has the benefit of no educational lag from the long break from school. I can definitely see how amusement park operators would want to conserve as much time as possible between Memorial Day and Labor day. That is there peak season when they bring in most of their money. BoddaH1994
I'm all for it. I honestly believe that kids learn absolutely nothing in the classroom. Once they get past the point of learning how to sit, pay attention, be punctual, and be organized, there really isn't a lot of value to school. Look at 1st through 8th grade... a kid sits there for eight years listening to a teacher read out of a book, only to have to answer true/false or matching questions on the exact same material which they covered with absolutely no need to thought or interpretation. It only gets worse in high school and college when you have to sit through lectures only to have to regurgitate the information in essay format. College is the biggest scam on Earth, but I won’t get into that. What’s the moral of the story? Take your kids to the zoo, a museum, an aquarium, etc. Let them be entertained AND learn. That way there’s something tangible that they can see and maybe even touch. They’ll learn a heck of a lot more than they would listening to a teacher yap away while staring at a picture in a text book.

Browntggrr
http://www.legislature.state.oh.us/BillTex...7_SB_89_I_Y.pdf Sounds like a win-win for everybody. But now I wonder how this will effect the high school football season and the basketball season as well. Only because, if the bill is passed, that means the football season could start one week later which would push football playoffs well into basketball season more than they already do. Not to mention, if school starts one week later, what kind of attendance could you expect at a game where school has not started yet? So the two sport athlete would have to forgo basketball pratice/ games until the football season is completed, even more than they already do under today's school schedule. Just a thought... BoddaH1994
A lot of schools make it impossible to play both football and basketball anyway...

Outdoor Man
I've never really understood why with Holiday "bookends" that the US Dept of Education hasn't said that the school year should run Labor Day through Memorial Day.... and oh, by the way- all schools within a particular range should be on the same calendar. And Boddah, I hopefully assume that your rant about education being a scam was joking.

With all the new regulations regarding No Child Left Behind it's only become worse. The primary goal of education seems to have moved from learning to being able to regurgitate facts onto paper. Vortexlover2
NOOOOOO!!!!!!! Now I can't get away with short lines at the end of the summer at Cedar Point anymore!!!!!!! DON'T PASS THE LAW. MarketingExpress
I like the idea being introduced here. Think about the number of schools that have been closed or dismissed early because of the extreme heat in the past few weeks. I hope that something like this gets passed, it will help boost the revenue at many tourist attractions, not just amusement parks like KI and CP. Browntggrr
^ Oh, yeah, the summer before 4th grade. Mom grilled me everyday. But the thing is, somethings are accepted as memorizing back onto paper, such as multiplication tables. Other things that are not used day in, day out like history or science should not be. If you don't use it, you lose it.

I remember one of my tests in 2nd grade was how many numbers between 1 and 100 could you write down in 60 seconds. Looking back, pretty pointless if you think about it. jzarley
^^ Oh, I definitely agree... I've been in corporate training (or "workplace learning & performance" as we now call it <g>) my entire career, and I think there are a few principles from adult learning that would be good to apply to childhood learning... Things like interactivity, practical hands on exercises, and most importantly--context. (Adults tend to learn new things that are contextually relevant to their job and life...I would think children would be similar.) And, of course, in adult learning programs there's always the matter of explaining WIIFM (or, "what's in it for me"), always an important component for learning to occur. Although, I have to say...I think I have it a lot easier in adult corporate learning than elementary teachers have it. I volunteered to help teach a class on creating web sites this year on "take your child to work day" and teaching that group (12 kids ages 8-12) was the hardest class I ever taught! WooferBearATL
Oh, I think that some would absolutely freak out if Corporate Training ideas were to be introduced by schools. I think it's the best thing that could happen but I can just hear some of the more right wing folk harping about "them progressive ways." However I think that comparing a classroom experience to ANY kind of real life experience is like comparing Everybody Loves Ramond to Romeo & Juliet. Outdoor Man
I'm not going to get into any debate on the subject. To do so would be pointless- but I will say that something the schools could teach more of- is our primary language... and the correct usage of such. And maybe go back to the basic "Home Ec" courses.... points being: It drives me up the wall to hear the "English" of: "I ain't got none...."- "I don't have none...." And this is in West Chester... not exactly mid-state Mississippi (no offense to anyone living in Mississippi). On the Home Ec side- learning to balance a checkbook being one... Parenting side- you need a license to do ANYTHING... but almost seems like anything with a reproductive organ can reproduce.... including the "father of the year" I overheard "parenting" his 2-year old at Walmart last night. Using lines like "I told you you weren't going to get none of that." or my favorite, "you better stop that or I swear to God i'm going to....." you can fill in the blank on that one... Yes...and spell checker and calculators should be burned-one of my computer classes even stressed the importance of using it..which I adamantly refused to do. Ever really noticed how many street signs and billboards are misspelled? Its shameful, and makes the citizens of this country look like a bunch of morons.
