Screamscape rumor of coaster removal at Cedar Point

Recommended Posts

I don't know if anyone has posted this yet but:

Right now I’ve got no way to confirm this rumor at all, so I’m just passing it on as a possible warning, but Screamscape has heard that Cedar Point may be considering the removal of “an older steel coaster” before the 2010 season. I’m guessing 2010 could very likely be the next year we’ll see a new coaster added to the park, so it may be time for an older ride to make way for a newer ride. With the arms race against Magic Mountain to see who has the most coasters over, the time may be right. I don’t have a name at this point, but my short list of possibilities would include: Wildcat, Disaster Transport, Iron Dragon, Corkscrew and the Cedar Creek Mine Ride. Despite the numerous rumors of Disaster Transport being removed over the years, we’ve heard that the park may be leaning towards removing a ride move towards of the back of the park, which would likely narrow it down to my final three possibilities if true.

I hope it's not the corkscrew if this happens, that just looks too cool over the midway

If this rumor is true, I hope that they take out disaster transport. Then they can build out into the lot right there, and that will draw people to that corner of the park. Right now there isn't enough there. The last three times I've gone, I've ridden WT once since its in a corner away from everything and there's no real reason to go back there.

Another one of those: "Well, ok. I'll believe it when I see it."

Now if this were even remotely true, I'd go with DT, even though I'm not sure it can be classified as a steel coaster. With DD being up for sale for a a while now (obviously not in CP's long term plans), the additional space that DT would leave would be large footprint possibly for the wood coaster CP is lacking.

But even at that, I still find it difficult to believe that news of this magnatiude would have been leaked.

^DT mainly uses gravity to coast down a series of hills on wheels, and has sudden changes in direction creating G-forces. It is also made of steel, how is it not a coaster?

I bet though that its Jr. Gemini with the old BCMT from GL taking its place in the count (but not necessarily the location.)

I never said DT was not a coaster. Where did you get that from?

I am just not sure if in this case discussing a removal of a steel coaster if DT can be catagorized the same way as Gemini, Corkscrew, MF, etc. DT does run on a steel surface, but not on steel rails like the other coasters mentioned. Even RCDB has it listed as steel/ bobsled. It is certainly a gray area as far as it's class.

Although I would love to see a new coaster instead of corkscrew or wildcat the space just isnt there. I would say that if a steel coaster is removed other than DT or Cedar Creek Mine Ride then I doubt we should expect much in the same place as those. Im thinking that Wildcat will be removed due to its low ride capacity and a new flat ride will be installed. But thats just my opinion

A good thing to look at is variety. Removing DT would take away a bobsled coaster. Removing CCMR takes away a mine train. And the hits just keep on coming. HOWEVER - Corkscrew has it's elements more or less duplicated by several other rides in the park. It's no longer needed because it's not unique like it once was.

I'll wait and see what really happens - if anything.

This is just my never humble opinion!

i dont really see CP removing corkscrew, wildcar, or CCMR because those are popular with the kids that arent ready for the big rides and are not that thrilled with the kiddie rides. Plus those are great family coasters. I can see them removing DT because people arent that pleased with it. People who go to the park for the first time dont know what to expect and when they wait an hour and a half or longer for a ride that isnt as thrilling as you would expect is disapointing. I would love to see and high energy fast and long Woodie in that spot.

I don't believe the corkscrew will go, because of how it decorates the midway, I have heard in the past that the ride would have been gone a long time ago, but stays because of this. DT would be good to go being right on the lake would be a great location for something.

I can't see Iron Dragon being removed.. It's a coaster with a really high capacity, and the footprint over the pond would be tough for putting in a wooden roller coaster, if that's what they were going for. However, I would love to see DT pulled. They've put a lot of money into re-theming it in recent years, and each time it just got worse. It's nice because you can walk on it almost all the time, but the ride is pretty bad if you ask me.

the longest line i've ever waited for was Disaster Transport. That was the one and only time I went to Cedar Point (sad I know) It was nearly a 3 hour wait that same day I think I waited about 2 and a half hours for Raptor but it was cool because they had a band playing in the que. Needless to say on the DT part I enjoyed the ride but not that much. To be honest the part I probably liked the best about DT is that it reminded me a lot of the Screamin Delta Demon at Opryland. To give reference to how long ago it was when I went to the point Raptor was 1 year old and I can't remember what was new that year.

Raptor would have been a year old in 1995. . .

Actually I was thinking wrong because Mantis was there at the time so maybe I was thinking it was a year old I'm not sure. Time for me to get back for sure now. I've always meant to go back many times but it's hard to drive 10 hours to get there when I can get to KI in a little under 5 hours.

?Do they ever have bands or a dj playing in the que's at Cedar Point anymore

The only time I ever went to Cedar Point was in 1996. Its such a sore subject. We drove 4 hours and got motel rooms for two nights. We got up, rode Corkscrew, got in line for Magnum, and they shut everything down due to rain. The only thing we got on was I think DT...did it used to be themed to something like a bobsled? Anyway, with it being the only thing opened we waited like 3 or 4 hours...what a trip... :(

I think a lot of people don't realize how long the line is for dt, till they've been in it awhile, and then they just stick it out since they've already invested so much time in line, if it were still an outdoor ride it probably would have much shorter lines.

The only coasters I see being removed that are steel are:

-Disaster Transport

-Iron Dragon

-Jr. Gemini

-Wild Cat

-Cedar Creek Mine Ride

-Mantis

-Magnum XL 200

I'm sure a lot of people will disagree with some of my thoughts, but let me explain.

Disaster Transport: Major disappointment to many, takes up a large area of space. A new, more thrilling roller coaster would draw guests to that area.

Iron Dragon: A more slow roller coaster that could easily fit a great steel roller coaster, maybe that much needed flying roller coaster.

Jr. Gemini: A small space that could fit another small roller coaster

Wild Cat: A small space that could fit an El Loco or spinning mouse.

Cedar Creek Mine Ride: Has became less popular and could fit a good steel coaster, maybe another launch, in its place

Mantis: Front row= face full of bugs. Middle or back= rough ride. It's no longer that great of a roller coaster and the lake environment could feature a new, good roller coaster.

Magnum XL 200: Rough, the best word to describe the coaster. Yes, its a bit fun, but it could feature a new giga coaster, more monstrous than Magnum XL 200 could ever be.

I have only ridden 11 coasters outside of Ohio and Florida, those two aren't even close to where I've been.

But Magnum XL 200 was rough.

And I can't believe I forgot this coaster- Gemini. Maybe it was because my Dad and I rode in the back, but it was the most painful ride on any coaster I've ever done. The only time I'll ever ride it again is to get the Gemini Blue credit :P

But I do see Gemini leaving.

Magnum is a park landmark, still one of the most popular coasters there, the CEO's favorite ride, and oh yeah just got painted and had some of the trains "refurbished." Basically, its not going anywhere anytime soon.

Gemini and CCMR have just completed (or will complete this off season) a major replacement of all their wood supports, something no park would do to a ride it plans on taking down in the coming years.

Widcat just got a brand new operating system, and was recently painted as well

Iron Dragon besides the new paint, is a very popular ride for youngins, and sends out full trains pretty much the entire day, its also not going anywhere.

It goes without saying that TTD, MF, Woodstalk, Raptor are all too new, and/or too popular to be at risk.

WT and Mantis are not as popular, but they are still quite new, I dont think they are going anywhere.

That leaves:

-Corkscrew

-Disaster Transport

-Jr. Gemini

Like I said before a Jr. Gemini/BCMT switch (in old aquatic stadium space, expanding the "Planet Snoopy" they are working on redoing this year) is the most likely choice for me, however I can see DT going too. As for Corkscrew, thanks to its footprint (small) and its visibility (over the midway) I think that one is relativly safe as well.
