The K.I. Coaster Accident Thread

Just curious about any and all CONFIRMED accidents on Kings Island rides and coasters over the past 35 or so years. Is there a complete list anywhere? If not, start it here!

I guess the most recent would be Son of Beast. Shame they had to remove the loop. Glad I got to ride it (unscathed) before they took it out.

I also remember hearing about King Cobra's opening year accident and that there was an original newspaper clipping on here somewhere. Anyone have it?

What other accidents have occurred to rides both current and past?

Not wishing to sound morbid at all, just a coaster fan with a natural curiosity about "when things go wrong", I suppose.

If you have the patience, you might go to Google News, keywords "Kings Island", "accident", and then click on "All Dates" in the "Archives" frame. You'll have to sort out headlines like "Kings Island Closes Ride after Kentucky Accident.", but there are at least 10 pages (default) that pop up.

I appreciate all the work KI does to ensure the safety of its guests. I'm sure that if you did a pie chart of KI "safe operating days" versus ride accidents over the last 36 seasons, it would look like Pac Man with his mouth closed.

As Browntggrr said...

What exactly do you consider an accident? Does someone have to be hurt, or can it be as simple as 2 trains bumping together? Do there have to be riders on the train for it to be considered an accident?

There are many factors that you left open

I guess my definition of accident would be... any time there is a malfunction that causes the ride to not go as it is supposed to, leading to or potentially leading to the injury of its riders, followed by a serious enough concern that the ride in question was closed for a period.

I imagine if they are NOT in a newspaper the park wouldn't want them out and about. If I currently or want to again work at KI, I would keep my mouth shut...there is a reason I haven't posted my stories from Carowinds good or bad. I will say that I seen things that I wish I hadn't and things I wish I had seen.

Yes that is true that when you look at most Amusement Park accidents they happen because of something the guest was not supposed to be doing. Very rarely do you see somebody fly out of a train or get beaten to death on a ride. I think Roller Coasters are one of the safest means of entertainment around. Kings Island really does not have a horrible record in the accident department.

You could not have said that better! So true.

I was at the park the day after the three people died all in one day. I remember my mom waking me up early in the morning and telling me what happened...asking if I still wanted to go. At that age, King's Island was one of the things I looked forward to most in life, so of course I still wanted to go!

Anyway, I remember there being a lot of news crews there that day. The pond where the 2 people were electrocuted was the one where the Viking Fury ride was (is? I haven't been in a while...). They had that whole area blocked off. I have to admit, it was kinda creepy there that day.

Maybe you were there the following day after it happened because both incidents happened in the evening. See below, it gives a detailed description of what happened including approximate times.

Yes it was definitely the day after. I did say that in my post but it's all good! I can see how it could have been misread. :)
