Steve
I got beat up in the middle/back of the train but if you ride in the 1st seat of the blue train (like we always do) you'll get a great ride every time! The lines are too long though..
The Interpreter
A good ride doesn't make its riders know where to sit to avoid being "beat up." Most rides I know of that did so are gone now: Harry Traver's Cyclone, Phantom's Revenge, Hercules...Besides, how is a new rider or seldom visitor to know where to sit? Why are the other--beating up?--seats on the train?
Browntggrr
I have a question...how many trains is SOB running..2 or 3? Kings Island only owns two trains. really now? did you not read the post that was 2 before yours? ki has the trains from villain! plus if ki only owned 2 trains how in the world would they be able to have 13 other coasters there? You have to be joking. Do you actually think that you can swap trains from coaster to coaster like a lightbulb lamp to lamp? KI had to retrofit the new SoB trains for the gaging of the track. The Villian trains, or any other trains at the park, cannot be used on SoB unless the are greatly modified.
Gordon Bombay
The two Gerstauler trains currently on Son of Beast came from Myrtle Beach Pavilion and are modified with larger chain dogs and a wider wheel assembly. The RWB and Villain trains rumored to be on property have currently not been used.
Steve
Yep, the typical tourist never knows where to sit and inevitably gets beat up. Not trying to excuse the ride.
Colonel_SoB_fan
I do not believe that it matters where you sit. I do not have a fav seat. I look to see which seat has a short line and I sit there. Like I said I don't get beat up on this ride. I think it has more to do with an individual than the seat itself. Like I said I don't get beat up on this ride. I think it has more to do with an individual than the seat itself. Probably true. I don't have any room to move so I generally don't get beaten up at all. However, some of my skinnier friends get thrown around like rag dolls. My only advice: Eat Mor Chikin. The Interpreter
Interesting. Once upon a time I had no room to move in the older trains. Son of Beast was not one of my favorite rides. Since that time, I am much less of a person, so to speak. And old Sonny Boy still isn't one of my favorite rides. Hey, I'm trying to be nice here.... Cormaster
I honeslty find the ride a lot harsher than it used to be, back in its "looping" days. I don't remember those trains being any rougher than Father beast. These ones are brutal. You almost HAVE to ride in the front, the back, well now I know how it feels to be inside a gigantic coffee peculator. This makes sense to me because the old trains were heavier. The loop was removed and lighter trains were installed in hopes that the new lighter trains would put less wear and tear on the track, however if you think of cars, a heavier car has a much smoother ride than a lighter car. Anyway I still enjoy the ride, but it really isn't the same without the old loop. I would of rather had them keep the ride closed all last summer and looked for a way to improve the saftey of the ride, without removing the loop. The loop obviously was the quickest and cheapest way to prevent an incident from happening, but anyone who's rode it pre-removal days knows what I'm talking about. Still an awesome coaster, but its just not quite the same. The loop was like the "grand finale" to the ride! However I doubt my wife would of been able to ride with the old trains. Like I said I don't get beat up on this ride. I think it has more to do with an individual than the seat itself. When I first started reading websites like this I was skeptical of people who claimed that too, however I can tell you that you do notice different feeling depending on the seat. This is is most evident at KI on Beast and Racer. Each car has three rows of seats. Take a ride in the back of one of these rows, then grab another ride in the middle of the three rows and compare. The middle row is by far the smoothest ride. However, on rides like SOB you are forced to sit above a wheel, the front on SOB is the only seat I find to be somewhat smooth. The loop obviously was the quickest and cheapest way to prevent an incident from happening, What evidence do we have to say that?

Woodies are for the most part not smooth, it really doesn't matter what seat your own you are going to be jarred a bit and depending on the ride the level or degree will be greater or less. If you want smooth ride get on a steel coaster.
Coasterkidman
Is there any doubts still about whether this ride can handle stress on a busy day. I was at the park from 11-8 yesterday and Went straight to the Son of Beast line like I always do. It was already over an hour wait and they were starting to use those extra waiting lines. At that moment I said today the Son of Beast can prove a point to the doubters about whether it can handle big crowds without taking time off. About an hour and half later I went back to the Son of Beast to check out the line and at this time they were using ALL the waiting lines, including the ones that extend past the normal ones headed toward Flight Deck. The ride never broke down yesterday, at least when I was there, and it was the longest line I had seen it have since it opened up. The ride is still popular even after a crash and it seems more reliable than ever. Why tear down this roller coaster? I do not find the Son of Beast enjoyable in any way. I have ridden it 5 times in my entire life and I have made a vow to never ride it again. The last time I rode it i rode it in the second to front seat, and a came off holding my ribs, and another person said to his father: "God, dad, thank heavens you didn't ride it. It was horrible, it hurt soo bad, you could died!" Now hows that for GP opinion. And don't give me this: "Well if you ride it in this seat it should be o.k" stuff. Any ride where you must ride in a certain seat is not a decent ride, because most of the GP doesn't know this and will get nailed.

You and whomever else you heard is still only a small sampling of the GP's opinion. Show me a lot more and we could start to get somewhere. Not saying you are wrong, just saying that a few guests do not make up the majority of the GP's opinion.

segdog2
I dont think ill ever ride SOB again. I have ridden it once a year since it was built. Everytime I ride it I say to myself why do I do it? I usually end up with a headach or feel internaly bruised. Just got back from CP and rode steel coasters 37 times in 2 days. Each morning waking up ready for more. I dont think if I rode SOB 37 times in 2 days I could say the same. I wonder if anyone has had an interest in riding SOB for a record? Prob not its would not be fun. Getting beat up on wood coasters is no fun. KI should replace the wood track with steel. Even better build a new train with smooth suspension. I have often wondered why they dont have ride smoothing suspension on coasters.
WooferBearATL
I agree with the most recent posts. I much prefer woodies over steel, but I really never have the desire to ride SOB now or in the future. The last time I road the ride, I had cervical strain (ie - whiplash) as a result. Put me off work for a day or two and I was miserable for a couple weeks.
The Interpreter
Wooden coasters do NOT have to be rough. Most are not. The primary reason why Ohio wooden coasters (AND the ones at Six Flags Over Georgia and Rolling Thunder in New Jersey) seem rough is the hard high-density polyurethane foam "cushioning" (I use that term VERY loosely) in the trains. Back in the day, the wooden coasters at Kings Island and Cedar Point had very lush padding. Those days are long since gone. I suppose it is for lower maintenance costs, but it certainly does not make for a comfortable ride.

I always tend to focus on the new lap bars on the coasters but the fact is that there is far less padding on each.
Cormaster
IF you don't like it, just don't ride it! lol. its a rough ride, and kinda painful but I always enjoy it! In fact I rode it 5 times during my visit last august! I'll be kind of upset if they remove it honestly. With crap like BLST, Top Gun, and Adventure Express, you gotta keep the intense coasters around!

Top Gun is a very fast and intense coaster, it;s just short. And I've hered many a coaster enthusiast say that Adventure Express is one of the best Mine Trains in the country. The Interpreter
I have ridden virtually every mine train in the country, and say Adventure Express is the second best of them all....and there are some very good ones out there! And, the only one that I think is better is newer, at Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio, Road Runner Express.
AintNutinElse2Do
Now just thinking of someone adoring Ninja (sfog) has given me a headache. I know their not the most appealing trains but the one's they are putting on Cliffhanger at GTITS should be a good retro-fit on all head banging loopers and yes I include Vortex. As SOB is concerned though I have not ridden it without it's loop but I know I LOVED the coaster before, I do think coasters should be more plush though, Millenium Flyer trains would take care of a lot all the issues most wooden coasters have. The nice cushioned seats and sides and the trailered 2 seat trains really keep down the jack-hammering making it an all around smoother ride.
