The Interpreter
...The amusement park has also announced it is to introduce airport-style scanners to make sure youngsters who are too short for the rollercoasters are not using any "tricks" to make themselves appear tall enough.... Park staff have caught creative children trying to sneak on by standing on tiptoes, wearing high heels, layering on socks and even attempting to fill their shoes with different items. Earlier this year one young boy was found to have attached a pair of flip-flops to his trainers with masking tape in a bid to make the grade, while a young girl appeared to have swapped shoes with her mother. "From Saturday May 23, high-heels of more than an inch will be banned and the Resort is currently looking to purchase shoe x-ray scanners similar to those now used in airports across the UK to speed up the checks on some of its bigger rides such as Oblivion and Nemesis," a spokesman for the park said.... ! ! ! http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics...hem-taller.html

teenageninja
At least they are focused on guest safety, a bit much, but safety first.
Beast79
I always had a hard time getting on King Cobra just like alot of people, first time I rode Cobra my step dad took off his socks and stuffed them in my shoes and it work haha!
74Gibson
Make a mental image of someone scanning shoes. How does that work? Is it a hand held device, walk through, put the kids on a conveyor belt. I'm all for rider safety but that's just funny.
The Interpreter
Funny? It's an X-Ray scanner....and little kids. I am old enough to remember when shoe stores had X-Ray machines so parents could examine their kids' feet with shoes they proposed to buy..."Did they fit?" The FDA made the shoe stores remove the devices, due to the excess radiation. Is it really safe to X-Ray kids' feet over and over again just to ensure they aren't trying to sneak onto a roller coaster with something in their shoes? There is such a thing as overkill...Not to mention the exorbitant cost of these devices...
indianapolisman
That's pretty extreme measures. You'd think they would find a better way to heel this tricky behavior.
The Interpreter
I've been a bad, bad influence! Terpy, who notes that pun was quite the shoo in...and who hopes the mods never tire of his cornball humor and give him the boot! If so, he won't be one of those loafers or sneakers who comes back under another name or engages in other flip-flops to come back, though! I was angry about that too but have learned to deal with my overbearing concerns with humor. Your talking to a guy who has protested nuke plants with poor safety records and was a manager at a citizan's lobby promoting fair and environmentally sound energy bills and industry practices. IBEW_Sparky
If they do ban you Terpy, you will simply have to hide in the Timberlands.

Dalefan
I beleave that Alton Towers did a record breaking coaster ride that didnt go to well with alot of people. It was a coaster ride where the riders were naked all the way. They had a full train and the park was closed to the public, but the story found its way on the net. Its not a joke either. Lol. I dont live in the UK, so anything i hear about Alton Towers is from here or other places. I never hear about Pride Day online at any of the parks here in Ohio. Its like if it is at the park you are going to then it is. I think the only ones who hear about any events like Pride Day or Nude Day is the ones who are going to it. Oldiesmann
Google tells all Back in 2004, the world record for "Most Naked People On A Coaster" was broken when 32 people rode Nemesis in the buff, breaking the previous record of 28, which was set earlier in 2004 on the "sequel" Nemesis Inferno at Thorpe Park (also in England). Here's an article on the original record. Can't find any articles about the new record because a film crew apparently recorded the stunt as part of a 50th anniversary celebration for GWR... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england...ies/3734635.stm Apparently this park has also hosted a "naturist" weekend for the past three years (2006-2008) in which everyone who feels the need to run around without clothes on can enjoy the park... I'm glad nobody has attempted such a thing in the US (though I'm sure there are plenty of laws that would prevent such an event).
The Interpreter
The mere thought of sitting in a coaster train naked where hundreds and hundreds of others have sat and will sit is, in my opinion, totally disgusting. I remember the press accounts of both these record-sitters. Yuck.
