Beast1979
Let's jam pack the park with (What is it now, 4, 5 Intamin Coasters?) that are nightmares to maintain and see what happens. What? They get broke a lot? I didn't see that coming! Seriously, part of the blame goes to Intamin, for making these rides like this in the first place, another goes to the maintenance crew. I mean really, look at that cable! That should be avoided at all costs, not "knowing what to do when it happens"! They better get this fixed before June 6, or I will NOT be happy. Tom76257
I'm with you, Jackson. Millennium Force is THE ride (not just coaster) i want to ride before I die, and this will be my first trip up to Cedar Point. I wanted to hit Millie first, but I'll just have to wait and see. Captain Picard
I don't know what the big deal here is as I have seen this happen many times over the years. It is usually back running again in days.

Guest rcfreak339
KK also got hit by lightning and is closed down. It won't run right. What happened? Im confused?
The Interpreter
KK in this case equals Kingda Ka at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey... Parts have been ordered and are reportedly on site. Terpy, who bets you were thinking of Kentucky Kingdom
SOB_TOM
Coming from the theme park maintenance background that I have, I can say that a lot of the times these things cannot be seen before they happen. First off, a cable like what Millie would use is made up of several smaller cables in one bundle. So if there is metal fatigue, its hard to see. Metal fatigue can only be seen through two ways: Visual inspection (which is done everyday, and is only to the exterior of the metal component) and Xray (which should be done once a year and is very expensive.) Most likely, and I do not have any knowledge of what CP does for maintenance, is that the life expectency of the cable is, lets say, 2 years. So you let the cable run for 1-2 seasons. That is what the PARTS manufacturer tells you. Occasionally, you will get a bad cable (One that does not last as long as it should.) Since the maintenance guys can only look at the exterior of the cable. So if some strands break on the interior of the cable, the maintenance crew cannot see the fatigue on the inside, therefor causing catastrauphic damage to occur to the cable itself, causing accidents like this one. So to blame the maintenance crew, there's only a limited amount they can do. Now if theres evidence that the maintenance crew was running the cable PAST what the life expentency was, then I will agree with everyone here. But lets let the evidence present itself instead of throwing people under the bus too early.

DaveStroem
They have cranes up there right now. I would guess that they are first trying to evaluate the damage. Hopefully it will only be down for a week. EXACTLY A WEEK and not 1 day longer. If MF is still down for CoasterMania, I wonder how it will effect the attendance to it and what they might replace the MF ERT with. Between this and looking at the weather, I am now kinda glad that I have not booked my room yet.
Touchdown
Im just going to give a shout in the dark, but I bet it will be Maverick. Might as well trot out the new ride for double ERT as opposed to anything else. Doubt it will be BS, Maxair, or Raptor as that is the night ERT. Diamondback FOF
Doesnt the catch car go over the top though? I'm not sure as to how the system works, but I would say it only goes to the very top, but not over, or it barely goes over. I've never been to CP so I don't even know what the system looks like. KK in this case equals Kingda Ka at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey... Parts have been ordered and are reportedly on site. Terpy, who bets you were thinking of Kentucky Kingdom What kind of damage has been done? What parts were needed? Do YOU, the Great Interpreter, know? Touchdown
No one was hurt, the train had safely cleared the lift before the incident. Whatever happened, happened when the ride was trying to bring the catch cab back to the station.

I don't know how reliable that site is (I find it pretty reliable), but they had a good explanation. Well, it's good enough for me at least . Beast1979
Maybe they should put lightning rods on coasters over 200 feet........
The Interpreter
There are.... Even many shorter coasters have such lightning rods...
violakat03
Lightning behaves in mysterious ways. It may have hit a part of the coaster not designed for that - just because the top of it is the tallest thing doesn't mean that's necessarily where the lightning will go.. Anyway, looking at the Sandusky Register's webcam, it looks like they're already hard at work on Millie. There's a crane up at the lift hill. As long as it isn't something they'll have to order and wait for parts for, I wouldn't be surprised to see them have it up and running for CM. http://www.sanduskyregister.com/registercam/
HTCO
If I am correct, wasn't The Beast hit by lightning or had severe wind damage a few years ago??
gigacoaster2k
I seriously felt a twist in my stomach when I saw that picture. I knew something was up when I visited CP on both the 16th and the 23rd of this month, and MF was having serious issues with the train getting momentarily stuck on the hill on both days, especially when it decided to give out for the last few hours on opening day. My friend James that works at Cedar Point tells me they are hoping to have MF back up and running by this Sunday. I don't want to believe this is real.. my poor precious baby.. The Interpreter
If I am correct, wasn't The Beast hit by lightning or had severe wind damage a few years ago?? Beast, and nearly every other ride in the park, has been hit by lightning over the years. I wish I could say such occurrences are rare. They are not. Top Thrill Dragster was hit the night before its media day, and almost didn't open for its media day debut!
AgentSoB
I'll be there this Sunday, so I'll take a ride for you all if it is open. This is completely freaky, but I have trust that they will take care of it to the fullest extent. Cedar Fair is good for this generally... least some kind of theming or charm didn't break. If that was the case, it would be hanging there all season.

kingsisland101
Poor Mellini! That cable looks insane. Did this happen as the car was going down the drop or did it just fall off?
RailRider
As said earlier steel cables can be visually inspected but that tells you absolutely nothing about what is going on inside with the numerous strands that make up the cable. There are very few warning signs of when a cable is going to break if there are no visual signs on the outside. To blame maientence for this is not right, unless they neglected to visually inspect the cable every day, which I highly doubt. Not the first time Millie has snapped a cable and not the last.
