Raising riders :)

So my husband and I are in the process of hooking our kids on riding. My oldest daughter is tall enough to ride everything in the park (except Diamondback) and she is very skiddish. So, I'm breaking her in lightly.

Now, my other 2 daughters would ride everything, if they were taller lol.

Yesterday, I finally talked my oldest into riding AE. I didn't tell her about the fake-out hills. I figured this would be a good ride to show her things aren't as bad as they seem. Well, she freaked on that last lift lol...then when nothing happened, she actually booed! I had to laugh. When we pulled back into the station, and we were asked about our ride, she screamed so loud and clapped...I was one proud mama.

Now, onto my other 2. We've never been able to get everyone on the Fairly Oddcoaster at once. Last night, we did. Nothing is sweeter than sitting behind my family, watching little hands raise in the air going down hills, and seeing their reaction when we pull into the station.

My husband and I were beaming with pride when they asked to ride FO in the dark ;)

How great is this picture?

;)

Now, if only I can convince my oldest to ride FlightDeck and Delirium with me....Any pointers? We gotta break her of her fear:)

I've considered the drag on method. That's what my Dad did to me when I was around 5. We visited Dollywood and I hadn't been on a "big" coaster (apart from the huge Little Dipper at Camden Park lol) and I was crying. He said 'You are riding, like it or not'. Well, since getting off of that ride, I've been addicted.

Thing is, we took her to CP when she was 4 1/2. I got her on Mean Streak and Corkscrew...and she loved it. Now she sees The Vortex and immediately says NO WAY.

I really think she'd enjoy FlightDeck. Shoot, I spent half of yesterday trying to talk her into riding BLSC. And failed.

I am sure you mean well but I think it is wrong to force a child to go on something of which they are absolutely terrified. The chances are greater that they are going to have a horrible experience on the ride and, thus, hate it and other thrill rides for life.

When my niece was little, I was open with her. I showed her what the ride did and if it was too scary, I would not force her to ride. As she got older, she would without any pressure from me go on the bigger coasters. Today she loves them.

Another suggestion on the coasters with the beginners: Start them at the front of the train ( and on a non-wheel seat if it is a wooden coaster.)

Always remember that there are some people who hate thrill rides and will always hate thrill rides. There may be health consequences to them riding such rides ( such as motion sickness, high blood pressure, etc. ) It is essential that people respect their limitations.

She isn't horrified, she just thinks it's going to be more than what she expects. Last time we visited the park, she did not want to ride Shake, Rattle & Roll and I talked her into getting on. It's her favorite ride now. We have been on it around 12 times this trip alone.

She's a bit dramatic (gets that from my mother in law  ) But in the end, she ends up loving the rides. It's just getting her on the first time.

I think the way you are handling it is fine. I was really responding to the suggestion by the poster that you use the "drag on " method. Perhaps it was tongue and cheek but you'd be surprised at some of the actions I have witnessed by parents trying to force their kids on rides they were terrified of.

I know what you mean.

I'd never take mine on if they were crying..but just a bit of nerves, yeah I'm gonna get them to try it out. And as much as she loves spinning rides, I know she'll fall in love with Delirium.

Speaking of spinning rides, we must have gotten the loosest Monster seat on the entire ride yesterday. We were spinning so fast everything was a blur. I almost lost my blue ice cream lol. She wanted more spin, holy cow.

This sounds terrible, but lie. XD. It worked for me with The Beast, and now I'm madly in love with it. My friends dad told me before the ride that it wasn't bumpy or scary at all. He lied. But I did it and loved it. Why not after AE try to get her into The Racers. I mean, nothing ever ever bad will happen to you. You won't die, so what are you worried about? That's what I ask myself, and I'm fine after that. I wouldn't do Delirium until ages broken into everything else, because the first time I did Delirium I nearly had a heart attack. And is she under 54 inches? Why not after she fells confident with The Racers, move on to the next, probly top gun. If she liked those two, get her on The Beast. NO ONE. HATES. The Beast. If she doesn't want to do that, do Italian Job, I think that's a great family coaster. Then do The Beast.

She rode it yesterday, the lift hills freaked her out..then she was disappointed with the no drop thing hehe.

That's her thing, going up. The dips, etc do not bother her..she just gets nervous going uphill. I've tried to tell her if she likes AE, she'll LOVE FlightDeck.

She is 53" tall.

Of course, i do not have any kids nor will i very sonn because i am only 15. But, when I do have kids, i will most definately be raising them as riders......or whatever thrill seeking extreme thing there will be in the future...haha.But, of course, if KI and Cedar Point are still around, they will definately be paying visits to them. Took my oldest on BLSC today :)

Scared her watching it, but then we got on and she loved it. Except for the dark part. That made her scared. When it was over, she was ready to get on again, but we waited 45 minutes for the first ride and were short on time.

Maybe next visit (Labor Day weekend) we can get The Racer in on our agenda. And maybe my middle daughter will grow the inch she needs to make the magic 48" :)

Oh she's not ready for that just yet. Now my middle child would if she were tall enough. But yeah. I just took my first ever ride on The Beast at night last night. I think it would terrify her lol. My friend (who is 27) was scared silly. It was hilarious.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there are other rides inh the park with the same height limit as Diamondback, aren't there?

This is really the first year we've been able to venture out of Nick U with the kiddos and deal with the height thing. I can't wait until a few years from now when they can all ride everything :)

BTW, no offense to Firehawk lovers...it's just not lady friendly lol
