Man Faces 10 Years For Assault On KI Security Officer

I know this is judging a book by it's cover but when I look at a Guard at KI I don't think of very enforcing figures. I am sure they can enforce the law very good but they just do not look like they could handle a very drastic situation like the one above. But then again, size is not everything. Also, I do not mean to bring down KI Security, they have a very tough job of maintaining security at a very wild place, an Amusement Park. Their job is very tough and for that I commend them.

Now we have to pay to lock the dumbasses up. It's money well spent but it still bothers me.

It does make me wonder how much training KI security personnell receive in hand to hand combat.

Probably none. The folks at the metal detectors and the folks in the white shirts are security officers. They do an excellent job at Kings Island, but I sincerely doubt there's an underground gym where they're trained on how to be Chuck Norris. The article posted mentions that it was a park police officer who was assaulted. The gentleman in black shirts at Kings Island are actual police officers. Often they've trained with, work at or have been with other police departments in the region. They carry guns, handcuffs and all the usual accessories. Judging by the fact that these goons are in jail and were caught, it seems the Kings Island Police Department did their job and did it well.

Yeah, the black shirt guys are actual police officers. They're also some of the most helpful and friendly employees at the park if you ever have a question.

I agree, line jumping is out of control this season. Maybe Cedar Fair should realize saving nickels isn't always more important than guest experience.

I was there that day, if it is the incident I am thinking of. Started near Diamondback and then it all broke loose around Nick-Go-Round, is this the same fight that is being mentioned in that article? I was walking in that area at the same time it all started and being in Nick Universe made it even worse in my opinion, seeing that there were very young kids in that area, some of which ran away crying when the individuals were tackled by the security and police officers. Makes me think its a real turnoff to come back to a park where a child has witnessed such an event.

I've seen line jumpers almost every visit this year. I'm not looking for them.. it's just hard not to notice when they push past you or squeeze between you and your group to get to their group. And you're standing there thinking "ok, so this line doesn't apply to you?"

Over the weekend I didn't see any line jumping and infact I saw one group that went BACKWARDS in the line to meet with the rest of their group. That's the way it should be.

As far as ling jumpers, I have no problem stopping them myself when they try to pass. I have never had one person continue pass me that I have stopped, but they may argue a bit.

You have to realize that Security cannot be everywhere all the time.

As some of you know, my brother is a police officer at the park. And he is the officer whose nose was broken. I can give details to anyone who is curious. Probably best not to post here though.

I really hope this guy sees jail time for this. My brother is okay now, in case anyone is wondering.

...yet I have not noticed a single line jumper during any of my visits this summer and haven't had a bad 'guest experience' either.

I suppose if you go with the intention of spotting rule violators then you are bound to spot a few though, but to me that seems to be a waste of time.

Well said ErosArrow. All those people who write trip reports here on KICentral go with the intention at just nitpicking out rule violators, it's become more fun than riding a coaster. You haven't noticed any line jumpers, so other people must not have either. Since you haven't see any line jumpers, you didn't see the cop get his nose broken so the Dayton Daily News must be lying. Gah, when will we get back to good print journalism?

DVO, send my regards to your brother and let him know that greatly I appreciate what he does. I have the utmost respect for good cops and have found KI security to be pleaseant and helpful. Some are pretty... not so tough looking though and I would be worried about them in a physical confrontation. Add to that the group factor and it seems like they could get overpowered. That's why I was wondering how much training they get in self defense and hand to hand combat.

Erosarrow, I have had someone try to jump me in line everytime I have gone this year. Notice I said try. I get angry and offended but I'm over it quickly. I go to the park looking for a release from all of my responsibilities and good clean fun and I can easily handle the small porblems that come with it.

Regarding line jumpers... I've seen them almost every visit this year, primarily at Beast and Vortex. I have never understood the point of having queues setup this way: the line for each individual seat is only about 4 people max. Inevitably, a blockage forms where the main queue line empties into the individual seat queue area, leaving short/empty seat lines in front and in back. People further back in the main queue line see this, and will cut across the closed-off turnstiles to get to those short lines. Instead of having all those turnstiles empty and closed off, it would seem MUCH better to just have longer queues for each individual seat in the first place, to avoid this problem. But what do I know.

Ok, sorry for the diversion... back on topic now.

I don't think you will find a single person on this site that DOESN'T care if your brother is okay.

Hopefully, though, I can speak for everyone in saying that we're all glad he's made/making a full recovery after the horrific incident. :)

Saturday night, I saw 2 guys try to jump the Diamondback line-it was interesting, because the trains were stopped for some maintenance issue, and the line was clear to wings. So anyway, when the line started moving, out of no where these 2 jerks ran up there and tried to get in and cut everyone-everyone in the line, including the employee, yelled at them to get back-those guys gave up, and walked away. They weren't interested in riding, they just wanted to see if they could get away with it. Assholes.

Since security can't be everywhere, if its a group effort, a lot of it can be deterred. I hope those punks get the maximum for this incident, and I'm sick of these people thinking they deserve preferential treatment. The officer that was assaulted is one of the nicest guys I know.

I agree, windshawne, there is a lot that can be said for patrons sticking together about things like line jumping. It's hard to get away with something like that when everyone else has been waiting 'patiently' for near half an hour! No way is anyone getting in front of me!

Tis is beyond ridiculous. Those people deserve every minute of their jail time. I've actually put up with some really disruptive people in parks and it's very annoying and almost ruins your day. I can't imagine this security officer getting his nose broken. He should of tasered the guy.

Dvo, I am glad your brother is ok, I would like to hear some of the details as the article did not really say that much about what happened. Amusement Park security as I have said before has a tough job wrangling an Amusement Park.

When I was a young pup working PKI Security not to long ago, Security Officers were instructed that there is 'Z E R O' tolerance for striking a park guest, employee or another Officer. There is 'NO' training on how to defend yourself from physical threats by others. However, our fearless Security Supervisor at the time, we'll call him 'EF' for short, instead, offered all of us a challenge to read the book "VERBAL JUDO, THE GENTLE ART OF PERSUASION" by George J. Thompson, Ph.D.. "That should be our only defense" he said. Only Park Police has the proper training to execute proper force when necessary. I used my experience as a Security Officer to attend The Ohio Police Officers Training Academy and Graduated in December that same year. I now work for the Courts! I know first hand how park guest are and can be.
