Ok, so does anyone know if it is true that there used to be a safari ride back where Adventure Express is and a worker got mauled by a lion? Also, does anyone know why it smells so bad riding it? And why does the ride end going up a hill? Seems kind of stupid to me. :P

It would be even more stupid if it didn't - kind of need to get the train back to the elevation of the station :)

they did! They added an enclosed lift hill with interactive guards and the 'Head protector' of the forbidden temple. Remember: They couldve easily made it just a lift into the station without any themeing. Be glad or "You will Pay!"

The night I rode it, it did have a sewage odor to it, at about the middle of the ride.

My dad insisted we ride the Safari at least just once. It wasn't the most interesting of rides, except for that one ostrich.

What are you talking about? There's a really cool enclosed drop at the end.....Haven't you looked at a park map? B)

I have to point out that, if you think one enclosed lift at the end of the ride is bad, you should probably look up Cedar Creek Mine Ride. The second lift is in the middle of the ride and doesn't do much besides slowing down the pacing of an already meandering ride. As one fellow rider on my last CCMR ride put it, "Woah now, I think we've broken 7 miles per hour!" I understand the fact that it's 52 years old, but, despite my love of classic coasters, it's just not that exciting of a ride for me.

Not to mention that there IS at least one poster here who finds AE to be one of his favorite coasters in the park. (Those tiki guys used to scare me to tears when I was little!)

I worked third shift security at the park when the mauling took place, bad times. We would have to go through and do gate checks at night around the perimeter and you could always see the glowing eyeballs in the distance when you checked the lion paddock gates. We also had to do a walk through of all the buildings. I remember the vet building with "the cooler". It was a place to always send any trainee you had with you by themselves, it was where they kept the dismembered body parts of the animals they did autopsy on. You would never tell them where the light switch was for the cooler so they would have to walk through with just their flashlight...ahh the memories B)

You consider it stupid, but it is actually one of the distinguishing features that AE is known for.

Also, AE is considered by some to be one of the best mine train coasters in operation today only behind Disney's Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

You go out of the station, and go downhill for quite some time before you reach the "first hill", which really isn't much of a hill. Just to look at the physics, if you go down, you have to come back up. Its just backwards from what most are used to. For example on Vortex you go out the station and go up. On AE, you go out the station, and go down. So at some point you have to come up.

I look at the ride as a story. You go into a temple (the station) and find some type of treasure. Then you start to exit, but halfway through a trap gets set off and you have to run through a lot of obstacles (most of the ride). Finally you see the light and exit out of the tunnel, (the final lift). It makes the ride a lot more fun thinking of it like that.

It's almost like running. You start out slow, then you pick up the pace, and finally at the end you walk so you can catch your breath.

Mine Ride is 42 years old, it was built in 1969.

the reason why it smells like it does sometimes is cause there is a creek down in the ride area that Action Zone drains lead into. it sucks having to work sometimes when the smell gets really bad. although it really isnt sewage its mainly melted ice cream that gets suck in the creek bed and thanks to the heat it begins to rot......if i remember right...wish we could do something about it to make it not smell so bad...but yeah AE is actually one of the top rated mine train coasters believe it or not

I consider Adventure Express my guilty pleasure coaster at the park. I could ride that coaster multiple times while some can only ride it once or twice. Its my second favorite coaster in the park #1 being The Beast. I had a firework ride on Adventure Express one night and it was awesome. Never have seen the fireworks from that perspective. You cant see much, but it was still awesome :P

AE is one of those rides that only gets better at night. I have always thought that it is the most under appreciated rides at night in the park. It just usually isn't at the top of most people's list when they are thinking about what to ride before the park closes.

I was amazed at how great of a night ride it is! The only thing that makes me a little upset is that the lights in the "Lava" Tunnel before the quick dip and turn around is all lit up. But other than that its a great ride!
