jlopez
My grandma gave me this post card when I was about 10 years old. She was going through some stuff and knew how much i liked amusement parks so let me have it. But I have no clue what the year is and thought maybe someone else would. any ideas? <a href=" title="Cedar Point by lopezjr68, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7003/6631292691_0f31211e9b_z.jpg" width="640" height="474" alt="Cedar Point"></a> <a href=" title="Cedar Point 2 by lopezjr68, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7173/6631295885_340629ec24_z.jpg" width="640" height="496" alt="Cedar Point 2"></a>
faeriewench
I've seen similar cards, my guess early 1980s by the logo (maybe the 70s..). I love old postcards! You can even see the Pirate Ride entrance behind Blue Streak there. Pirate Ride scared me when I was a kid, lol.
jlopez
I was thinking 70s. I love old postcards too. I wish I had more old stuff like this.
faeriewench
Yeah I'm going with the 1970s on this one myself. In the 80s CP began using the Amazement Park slogan.
jlopez
I never knew the log flume was ever at the front of the park?
faeriewench
Yep, it was built in the 60s if I remember right, I believe it hung around up until just before construction began for Raptor (we have pictures from the late 80s and its still present). Shoot...interesting enough, there was a ride called Shoot the Rapids waaaaaay back. Here is a photo my grandpa took from about the same angle and its the late 80s here. http://www.flickr.co...157624998868097 For your postcard, its post 1972 cause the Giant Wheel debuted in 72 so that should narrow some years down hehe. TombRaiderFTW
Wow, that's awesome! As I understand it, that log flume was demolished to make way for Raptor. Great find!
markr
I think the log flume ride was called The Mill Race. It was there until Raptor began construction in the fall of 1993.
faeriewench
Thank you for all the help helping me figure this out. No problem CP was the park I grew up with so the old finds from there make them all that more interesting to see for me.
PREMiERdrum
I think the log flume ride was called The Mill Race. It was there until Raptor began construction in the fall of 1993. This is correct. Mill Race was at the front of the park, while the original Shoot the Rapids was back in Frontier Town and was replaced by Whitewater Landing (which was replaced by Maverick, as the Shoot the Rapids name was used on the new flume on Millennium Island). Got all that?
jlopez
So the log flume at the back of the park was a different log flume? When was that one built? I dont know much about Cedar Point history at all. I grew up going to Kings Island. My first trip to Cedar Point wasnt until 2000, and have only been 4 times since. I'm getting very interested in the History though edit: was late posting this, your post above ^ is what i was looking for. thanks for the info. The Interpreter
But the original Shoot the Rapids ride truly WAS a family ride and fun. Mr. Kinzel SAID the new one was a family ride the entire family could enjoy. Perhaps he took Barton on it!

Mill Race was built around 1967 at the front of the park. It remained until 1993.
CoastersRZ
I still have yet to ride the new Shoot the Rapids ride at Cedar Point. I still miss the old White Water Landing flume ride they had at the back of the park.
faeriewench
The original Shoot the Rapids came about 1970-1971 Man was it really the late 60s? I know Mill Race came around in the 60s. I didn't know that, I'm actually going by the book and not internet lol.

No Snoopy or elephant or even gushing coconuts required.

CoastersRZ
Is that really what Shoot the Rapids is like? I guess I`m fortunate to have never been on it then!
faeriewench
By the pictures I have of original Shoot the Rapids...I'm not sure if I wanted to ride that myself. Premier - I have 2 different copies of the Queen of American watering places and both list Mill race as opening in 1963 which put it before Blue Streak and I was under the impression Blue Streak was older...thats not correct? If the Kroger cart had goofy overhead restraints, yes. I didn't mind the ride when the water effects were "dialed back", the placemaking and general atmosphere are quite nice (especially when compared to CP's track record). BUT the watercannon at the end absolutely kills it for me.
The Interpreter
The old one was great fun. The new one? It's better than Ninja at Six Flags Over Georgia, but, then again, what isn't?
