I thought when I entered a White Castle eating contest back when I was in high school was stupid, this takes the cake. Well, a roach filled cake. People will do anything to win a prize, no matter what the contest is. Be it walking barefoot on white hot coals, swallowing swords, eating light bulbs or other dangerous items. Who in their right mind will eat live insects? I would expect this kind of event at drunken, spring break event with stupid students but a grown adult? I wonder what the cause of death would be? Alive insects trying to chew their way out?

This has me wondering about Fear Factor Live at Universal. I have always suspected they switch out the roaches and other bugs with a regular milkshake, leaving the audience believing it was the bugs, but what if it isn't?

^I doubt they would put their actors into something as intensive as eating ****roaches regularly, and I doubt the actors would be compelled to do so. I know that I would rather ride Son of Beast in it's current state than eat a single roach!

I've never seen the show, so thank you for informing me.

To have the park put roaches upon their guests sounds down right revolting, so no doubt it's not an actual roach. But this is all speculation, you see, so it would be more appropriate for someone more "in the know" to offer insight.

I know the military in the survival training instruct the soldiers on what type of insects they can eat in order to survive and keep their strength. My classmate, who was in Special Forces went through this training. But it is another thing for a person to eat them in some foolish insect eating contest. And all this for a chance to win a snake? I know I will never, ever enter this stupid contest as I could not dissect a grasshopper without throwing up.

There are plenty of people in other countries/cultures that eat bugs and plenty of other things that Americans would find disgusting. There is really no harm in eating Roaches or most other bugs.

The linked article was rather uninformative. I read another with comments from an Entomologist stating the eating of the bugs is OK, especially those at a Pet Store. They are raised in a controlled environment since they are sold as food and must be contaminate free.

I once watched a special on weird foods. Children that were eating Coagulated Sheep Blood were revolted by the taste of Peanut Butter and other "Western" foods.

Based on the seemingly rapid onset of symptoms based on the timeline presented in the article I am going to put my paramedic hat on for a second and say it was probably an allergic reaction. Rapid onset, no one else got sick, quickly fatal. Has all of the hallmarks of anaphylaxis. Could happen to anyone trying a new foodstuff for the first times. Sounds like one of those freak coincidences that it was bugs or worms that he reacted to. Same thing happens to some people the first time they eat shrimp, we just never hear about those cases on the news.

These contests reminds me of something that radio stations or some other group would do to entice some person to win tickets to a rock concert or some other event. Be the last person standing in a pit full of creepy, crawling, sliming creatures and you win 2 front row tickets to the KC and the Sunshine Band concert! (my own silly contest made up)
